Why are you checking your ketones? Ketones (acetoacetate and bethydroxybutarate) are generated from the breakdown of fat- ie. using fat instead of carbs to fuel your body. Everyone will produce ketones after a signficant fast. They aren't generally harmful in a healthy person and are processed for energy by your cells. I'd…

Why would you do this? The 'weight gain' is just water, not fat. The 'water pills' (depending on what you are taking) are pretty heavy duty drugs which can mess up your sodium/potassium/chloride balance and your blood pressure. Women are meant to have a period, its normal and healthy- no its not much fun and we all retain…

Nonsense. Sorry- just one of those things people want to believe because magic seems easier than energy in<energy out.
-
Possibly anxiety if you are well other times and still exercising without problem, but you should see your Dr to check its nothing else.

If our 'normal' habits were OK, we wouldn't be overweight. Its a big change, and one of the great things about tracking your calories is that you start to realise just how much MORE you can eat if you make the right choices (certainly made my regular starbucks order look a lot less appetizing) I haven't seen your diary,…

Your body needs nutrition when you are sick. Don't stress out too much, you will only be poorly for a few days hopefully and you can;t restrict too much when you are fighting infection, Just try and make less bad food choices, but eat what you need and get back on track in a few days. Get well soon.

Its easy to get obessive and stressed out, which in turn probably doesn't help. My hormone profile is pretty much OK, if I don't fall pregnant in the next few months now my BMI is normal-ish, it'll be off to gynae for investigations. Keeping fingers crossed that being somewhat healthy and losing the chub will help.

Try not to worry too much and enjoy your trip. The portions will probably be more 'normal' than in the US, but otherwise just try and make the sensible choices same as you would at home. Explore the area in the evenings/weekends on foot and burn some cals. DO enjoy the local specialities as much as you can though, its not…

Double check what you've actually had again ( lots of people underestimate portion sizes and this was something which tripped me up at the beginning), and look at the calories burned again. I think MFP overestimates calorie burn significantly for some types of exercise. Also look at what your 'activity level' is set at, if…

Me too. Been TTC for about 18 months actually, finally decided/realised that a BMI close to 30 wasn't helping. BMI now down to 25.3 (hooray), aiming to lose another 10lb at least.

It needs to be sustainable- which means you can't stop everything else in your life. Sometimes its important to miss the workout and do something else, not just forgiveable. Just so long as it doesn't start turning into excuses not to exercise and you keep a balance in your life.

Which supermarket do you use? Sainsbury and tesco both do ready to cook fresh meals which I really like- the just cook range is pretty good, you have to pick out the healthy ones but they are very easy to shove in the oven and the portion control bit (my weakness) is done for you. The innocent veg pots are pretty good for…

It might be worth investing in some scales- they don't have to be expensive. Once you get the hang of it its easier and you won't need to weigh everything, but when you're starting out its really easy to massively underestimate how much you are taking in and I wouldn't be surprised if thats why your calorie count appears…

There is actually a really straightforward answer to this. If you had had early menopause/hormonal issues etc, you may have been more at risk of osteoporosis. In the context of back pain after a shunt in the car, you wouldn't expect someone with 'normal' bones to have fractures. But if someone had…

I've been using it lately because I badly needed a kickstart. I expected it to find it awful but I've not been hungry like I expected and its very easy. I've lost 13 lb in a month on it, even with a few cheat days. I plan to lose a few more lbs then substitute one shake a day with proper food, then the other. Its not a…

The gym ones are probably more reliable. Also depends on the kind of scale you have, but they can be affected by differences in temperature, humidity and the surface they are standing on (carpet vs. tile etc). I like having my own at home to prompt me to behave myself, but when I go to the doctors or a personal trainer, or…

Thanks so much for that link! I have a keg which should be ready for sampling in the next few weeks (brewed ready for the rugby world cup)- could be dangerous! I think I might have to switch to bottling, because otherwise the temptation to go back to the keg for another glass is too great- while I could store the bottles…

I've done it. I HATE shopping- nothing makes me feel worse, and I usually end up sitting in the changing cubicle in tears :-(. I can't bring myself to pick the larger sizes off the rack, so in the past I have either bought the smaller sizes kidding myself I could wear spanx or something and squeeze into it, or left the…

Snake soup (good), snake blood and bile in alcohol (yeuch), battered chicken feet, pigs feet, bbq'd crickets on a skewer (didn't taste of anything), some weird gelatinous egg dish (not good) -all in china roast guinea pig (good, very gamey), llama meat (tough but tasty), random nameless fruit from amazonian trees (all…

Any GP would be able to do the necessary thyroid function tests and interpret them and refer on if necessary.

Be careful messing with your potassium (all your electrolytes in fact)- it is maintained by your body within a very narrow range and being outside that range in either direction can be really dangerous to your heart. So don't take potassium pills or supplements without proper discussion with a real-life doctor.

You are not 'reacting' to water, and it has nothing to do with the tap, the water brand or the substances in your cup. If you fill your stomach and stretch it, your tummy can be uncomfortable. A normal reaction of your gut to being stretched is called the 'gastro-colic reflex' which is why you have the urge to defaecate…

I have EXACTLY the same, and am a similar weight to you. When I lose weight, I lose it all over, but that SHAPE which I hate, stays the same. Its really depressing to have lost loads of weight and feel much healthier, but still look bulgy in clothes! Don't know what they are called, but those ab exercises where you lift…

It definitely is a chemical thing- you are basically self medicating. Some people find that getting treatment for the underlying anxiety helps to reduce that urge to binge. That could take the form of medication or counselling. Might be worth seeing your doctor.

I wouldn't stress too much about it. The calorie goals are estimates based on 'average' they aren't set in stone and each persons requirements are likely to be different, because everyone's metabolism is different. (are you sure you have your activity settings right?) Make healthy choices, don't wait till you're startving…

Aha- now thats what I was after. Hubbie will have to eat his words!

Is it true that your body is more efficient at walking than running? I thought the whole point of running was that it was more efficient at covering distances quickly? Would we not all have evolved to speed walk towards our prey if that was more efficient?
-
Thing is, I think it is about physics. A calorie is a unit of energy. Energy used = mass x distance unless my physics is very rusty. And although you are sweaty and breathing hard when you are running, you take much less time to do the same distance -i.e are working harder for a shorter time. Is working hard + shorter time…

I do exactly the same! Changing the recipes around is a good idea, and maybe finding healthier ways to cook your favorites like lasagna. making sure you don't have junk in the house is really important for me because it is much easier to be disciplined for one hour a week than several times a day. Don't forget that in the…

Some of the weight, and abdominal bloating is probably related to the fibroid. But you are right- you need to start doing what you can to improve your fitness and general health beofre the op- it will help loads with reducing operation risks, improving wound healing, and reducing how long you are out of action for. 2-3…
