  • Breakfast with diced bacon and a fried egg? That... is... an awesome idea.
  • Interesting... I'll have to try that. They don't get soggy?
  • Not really. But living in New York, you pretty much see a row of salads and quinoa dishes across the row of work desks at lunch. When I first started changing my diet, people definitely noticed and commented... but I used to be the one organizing Shake Shack Fridays with the field crew, and due to p90x was dropping pounds…
  • That is awesome. I am Dumbledoor.
  • Good thread!* Pistachios in the shell * dark chocolate and peanuts * Avocado w/ lil' salt and pepper And one thing I highly recommend:* Cut Brussels Sprouts in half * Put in a baking pan with some olive oil / bam-style seasoning * Let the loose ends / flakes stay in the pan * Cook at 375 degrees * Pull out of oven and…
  • That's fair. Though I still would argue that sugar cereal is really never worth eating (for both taste reasons and the high-sugar content / poor nutritional value). Objectively, some foods are just garbage and don't make any sense in the human diet. A white bagel for a lot of the same reasons (boring, bleached flour, is…
  • That doesn't make it a healthy or even neutral food just because an active person maintaining a healthy, balanced diet can work it in without ill effect. Most Americans eat a ton of white, processed breads with every meal -- not just as a treat -- and it's no better for you than a glazed donut. Replacing these with whole…
  • High carb, calorie, glycemic index while offering no protein, fiber, or nutrients. Obviously not great for weight loss... There are way better breakfast options.
  • Awesome to hear. I'm doing p90x again -- but obviously it's a time suck compared to p90x3. I'm thinking of replacing some of the workouts and seeing how I like the new program. Are you getting the same results even with such an abridged workout?

  • There are certainly bad foods... A white bagel, sugary cereal -- that are, quite literally, never worth eating if you are interested in health and fitness. If you're still hungry -- enjoy another handful of peanuts or nuts -- they are great for satiety and these high-caloric foods will keep you healthy. It's not just about…
  • This led me to a pretty interesting read here: http://www.alanaragonblog.com/2010/02/19/a-retrospective-of-the-fructose-alarmism-debate/ The note about the Japanese diet is the most bizarre. Having lived there for three years, I was constantly inundated with omiyage cakes, sugared coffee in a can, pocari sweat (loaded with…
  • My burrito is 1,260 calories. I get the burrito, chicken, brown rice, black beans, sour cream, cheese, guac. It's heavenly... but would end up basically being my main source of calories for the day  -- Danny
  • I'll defer to some of the actual nutritionists on the forum, but this is part of my beef with calorie counting forcing folks into an OCD and mathematic relationship with food... not healthy. Kudos to you for being a proponent of clean eating, which doesn't get much love on this forum for some reason. My advice (and feel…
  • I get so much conflicting information on this one, that I tend to ignore it now. It seems intuitive that eating in the morning would mean you're burning off more throughout the day (http://aje.oxfordjournals.org/content/158/1/85.full) but I'm told more modern research has shown this to be a lot of hocus pocus (one meal a…
  • This is precisely the point. Very well said.
  • The ones I listed are actually more mid-range carbs (compared to say, corn, potatoes, yuka, butternut squash) -- which I still love and enjoy. I'm not sure we disagree all that much. To be fair (and to your point) I also wouldn't necessarily call my diet "low-carb" in the Atkins or anti-veggie sense; it is more that…
  • I personally choose a low-carb diet, because it allows me to focus on well-cooked proteins, lots of veggies / fruits, and the occasional whole grain (though I often replace the grain or rice with quinoa... because I absolutely love it). Losing weight does require a caloric deficit, but I choose to focus more on great foods…
  • Haha, good thread. A handful on peanuts, because I'm on the p90x diet and I was hungry... a few peanuts are amazing to tide you over to dinner.
  • I am grilled salmon with quinoa and broccoli. I eat that dish a helluva lot.
  • Thanks :). Still a long way to go and will keep at it.

  • Yeah, this. I resisted because OP said he was currently in college -- where it's called partying and trying to look cool. Keep this up into your late 20s early 30s and it's called something else.
  • You're just saying you need to cash all 17 shots of vodka a day with your water :)? Or are you nursing your concoctions of low-cal jungle juice throughout the week? Not judging, but damn I found it much easier to just cut the alcohol when I'm training (and I would consume about that much at some places in my life). Not to…
  • I've only done p90x, but heard awesome things about Insanity being a super tough program! Exciting and keep it up :). I definitely know that second-day feeling. Keeping records is the best way that I stay motivated to do it the next morning...
  • So, personally, I prefer a high-protein breakfast. Pork chop with a friend egg, and side of fresh avocado with salt and pepper. This is great after a tough morning workout -- and there's some research showing that it's beneficial to brain power to get your protein up front (but take the internetz with a grain of salt --…
  • Big fan of the P90x Core Synergistics workout -- it peaks up once you get about half-way through the program and is very fun / challenging. Also, p90x3 (the newest version) is heavily focused on core strength. I'm probably going to sound like a p90x apologist -- but these have really done a lot for me!
  • The yoga is very difficult. In fact, as others have stated it's actually considered (by many Yoga instructors) waaaay too difficult for first-timers, whose form is unmanaged and muscles and flexibility just isn't there. Personally, I hacked it out my first time doing p90x (and I started p90x cold off the couch). About…

  • Totally agree with others here. With Brussels Sprouts: cut em' in half, toss them in some olive olive, spice em' up -- and throw them in the oven with some onions and garlic on 350. The loose pieces will get all crispy like chips -- and the second you pull it out of the oven, sprinkle feta cheese over top.
  • I taught elementary/middle school in Japan for 3 years, and overweight kids were exceptionally rare. Uniform meals typically consisted of a protein, veggie, and bowl of white rice, glass of 2% milk. On special occasions, a piece of karage (or fried chicken) was a treat. I'm still told the lunches came in around 1100…
  • Great thread idea :). I've lost 200 sticks of butter in a year!
  • Really impressive. Congratulations on taking control of your body and your life.
