  • Yeah I can see how my email came off that way, though I thought I was prefacing enough that it was my personal experience and how diets can affect satiety etc. (the subject line says "My experience") The post wasn't really meant for folks who are 100 percent happy with what they're already doing. Also, again, I wasn't able…
  • Thanks for the comments! No I should've prefaced better, this is what worked for me. If others can eat whatever they want within restriction and not feel terrible/hungry all the time, more power. When I was eating pastas, breads, cookies -- I consistently overate and/or was starving. I needed something different, and keto…
  • Satiety, mostly. Keto worked really well for me in limiting hunger and cravings. Definitely different diets will work for different people, but I wanted to lay out my personal experience -- and limiting carbs has just overall been transformative in multiple ways compared with the other plans I tried.
  • I "track" my carbohydrates (mainly I just keep a mental tab to ensure I'm in the 20-50 net-carb range) and then I track my daily weight using a weight-tracking app. I also do intermittent fasting (I only eat one big meal a day around 7pm with some light snacks until 9 or 10). The daily weight tracking is GREAT because it…
  • Cool thread but would like to hear more about what kind of intermittent fasting you chose. Questions:* When did you fast / how long? * Did you track macros? * What was your program? (Cardio and weight training?) Clearly weight training but curious if you had an aggressive cardio plan on that of that. Cheers!
  • Had to comment on this because I just laughed out loud at the office and made several people turn around to look at me.
  • Oh you beat me to it. I love fresh pineapple. Nothing gets rid of my sweet tooth like fresh pineapple.
  • I highly recommend you start weighing yourself at the same time every day -- and try (though it's hard) not to let the scale dictate your mood. Your body can swing 5 even 10 pounds of water weight depending on circumstances and diet. Tracking a daily weight let's you see the downward trend. And you can do it. You're here,…
  • I know people who drink a bunch and maintain or cut weight. I am NOT one of those people. Too much alcohol makes me feel starving -- I crave lots of greasy food, and it obliterates my willpower for the next 48 hours as I try to feel better. On top of that, I'm unlikely to work out in any serious way. A glass or two of wine…

  • It's the aspartame question. Is it a harmless sweetener? Or is it giving EVERYONE CANCER? I think a lot of people believe it's bad for them. But at the end of the day, you'd be hard-pressed to find a legitimate, peer-reviewed source that proves it's causing problems in the doses at which we consume it.…
  • I watched it. If I recall (and I'm not splicing together food documentaries) there's some useful information in there about the unethical treatment of animals, how the industry bullies farmers, and just how poorly the chickens are treated. It jumps the shark when it starts telling people that white meat chicken is as…
  • Also @lemurcat12 saying I "completely disagree" with you is actually too strong. I agree that the problem isn't "carbs" and reject fanaticism on either side. It's about CICO -- but calorie-dense options and food deserts make it all the more difficult in America. People telling kids to "move more and eat less" when they…
  • Completely disagree. I taught English in Japan for two years, and students were required to eat a protein, vegetable side, small bowl of a rice, and a glass a milk. Every day. Not a lot of rampant obesity among Japanese school children, is there? Why? That's a great balance of macronutrients, it's portioned, and balanced…
  • Oh yeah, alcohol. That's a good one. Honestly alcohol is what has gotten me into trouble in the past. I make TERRIBLE eating decisions when I'm drinking and then for hours afterwards if I'm trying to "fix" a hangover. Had to give it up. Only 1-2 drinks a week now, if that.
  • Actually I feel much the same way. Sometimes I find that hunger focuses me, makes food taste better and more enjoyable. I vastly prefer a big meal or two to several small bites (and I almost never "snack").
  • Hmm, so I make a hell of a good stromboli from scratch. I've never thought to calorie count it, because that would be insane. But I would a loaf of this w/ a bottle of wine every single day if it were "healthy" to do so :).
  • Hrm, not sure on the Shirataki. But I do LOVE spaghetti squash. Texture is great and is good w/ chicken meatballs and avocado-based pesto :).
  • Correct, but it's also the cheap availability of calorie-dense, nutrient-poor foods. The marketing of "low-fat" products as a healthier alternative (lies) and the crap we force feed American students day-in day-out that promote a lifetime of poor behavior... Saying y'all are right, but that doesn't mean there aren't other…
  • This is helpful. So "green" checkmark means it was verified by a 3rd party? I see that for a lot of pre-packaged stuff -- but since I mostly cook at home this feels like a bit of guess work. Good idea on counting the stock and quinoa separately. I could never eat quinoa without boiling it in some delicious stock :).
  • Why are people so rude in response to questions like this? Short, arrogant responses about CICO aren't helpful. Listen to Lwtibury. There are absolutely ways to change what you're eating, lower calories and find foods that will make you feel better, provide more satiety / less cravings etc. and help you to hit your goals.…
  • I did Whole30 in February -- very strictly. I LOVED it. Mostly because it presented a unique culinary challenge. I didn't track that month it kickstarted a very successful diet / lifestyle changes since then. Some favorite recipes my wife and I made on Whole30, and continue to make regularly post Whole30:: Veggies &…

  • It's actually a good episode for the most part. Bit of an over-focus on sugar and some fatalism, but some good here too: The good:* Destroys the idea that "low-fat" products are good for anything and that fat is "bad." * Exposes how paid researchers and "scientists" can and have used bogus studies to support one lobby or…
  • I didn't think about that, and could be part of the problem. I've lost over 40 pounds since January (which I know is a lot) so I've been keeping to deficit for sure. I've been doing a mixture of Beachbody Insanity, running, weight training, running stairs and cycling 4-5 times a week... often to exhaustion. Getting to…
  • Yeah Insanity is a lot of jump training, burpees, running in place, jumping jacks etc... I was going pretty strong with it. I also think I need a better pair of workout shoes, these are pretty run down. Going to fix that problem, too.
  • Okay I went to the doctor. Torn ligament. They put me on a steroid. Should be better in 2-3 weeks if not sooner, but no Insanity for awhile :(.... Thanks for the advice, folks!
  • Totally... Honestly right now my macros are split up about like this. If you're experimenting, you could even try this (though I'm not sure it'll help w/ hunger pangs at first):* 10% breakfast * 30% lunch * 60% dinner I don't really snack. I eat a similar number of calories per day, but my breakdown tends to be heavy on…
  • Probably a bit stronger than I was in that after shot, but still going strong here.
  • I'm a fan of this attitude :). As long as I can get right back to it the next day, I'm not going to stress. And this thread has been helpful w/ that. Thanks all
  • Someone once jumped down my throat when I said I did this once -- that I was putting my body in "starvation mode" and that multiple meals were needed to boost metabolism like "kindling on a fire" and eating a large meal all at once means "your body has no choice but to turn most of it into fat." With more research I'm not…
