  • I know some might disagree -- but I'm a huge fan of this strategy. I dare say I enjoy the occasional fast (and honestly don't mind hunger that much). But if I know I'm going out for a full rack of ribs at night, I'll fast the day until that big meal. This specific case -- the Indian restaurant was spur of the moment, so I…
  • Right on. Body handles alcohol a little differently than the other macros (as I am starting to understand). But you're still getting calories from it. 1-2 shots of vodka though is just 194 calories. Now alcohol can absolutely make you gain weight. I have the evidence from my 20s...
  • Thanks, I see your posts on MFP a lot and they're very thoughtful/helpful. The truth is that I have no idea what my goals are at the moment. I'll never be a competition person. I actually hit my first major goal (target weight = healthy BMI) and now I'm just shifting the goal post to be more fit, do more pullups, etc.. but…
  • I wasn't offended :). A 6'1 male doing Insanity and weight training has a different TDEE than someone else might.
  • I recommend trying something like Whole30, just for a month. You can still track and log, but it'll force you to step outside your comfort zone, research new meals, cook (a lot) and incorporate a lot more veggies into your diet. When when I went "back" and started reintroducing old favorites, my wife and I had a whole new…
  • I love diet soda. Love. I gave it up for a month when I did Whole30 to see if I "felt" any different, and reintroducing it didn't really do anything (but give me back my beloved Diet Coke). I'm just not convinced that aspartame is all that bad for me -- seems like hype, and the science seems to back that up.
  • I just went into a rabbit-hole on this source. I'm diving in, thanks for the recommendation.
  • Concerned by this post, a bit! The scale is nothing to be afraid of. Your body fluctuates massive amounts day in and day out from water retention, waste, sweat -- everything. Eat a few high-sodium meals out and you'll see some water retention for sure (even upward 5-10 pounds!). Do an intensive, sweaty, hour-long workout…
  • This is the most stubborn weight there is (for me, at least). For me, belly and love-handles are the first weight I gain and the last weight I lose. Bottom line: Your body wants to hang on to that weight. It's a nice concentration of stored energy and you won't lose it until your body fat percentage is lower. If you're…
  • It's great! My wife is getting a lot of use out of it because she's carefully tracking her macros. No complaints so far. Good purchase.
  • Welcome to Ohio! I moved back to Ohio a year ago (and grew up here). My wife and I live in Columbus. Honestly if you're in the area you should absolutely go to Hocking Hills. Worth the 2 1/2 drive. Great hiking, biking, caves, river kayaking, rock formations, trails, and the superman zip-line is probably the fastest/most…
  • For me it's feeling good. Feeling good when I run up a flight of stairs or can play with my nephew and match his energy. Realizing that my 30s can be and are the most fit I've ever been in my life (a far cry from my 20s). Not having to "suck in your gut" as default. Being far more in touch with what my body needs and…
  • It's funny, now that I'm in better shape I only drink Gatorade when in either A). Running a half-marathon or long-distance bike ride or B.). I'm really sick (we're talking the flu) and need to replenish fluids. Back in the day I used to drink tons of the stuff to "hydrate" and didn't realize just how many calories I was…
  • I really liked "Cooked" (a lot). That series spoke to me and was beautifully produced. "Chef's Table" is also interesting, offering a glimpse into restaurants that are mostly pay "experiences" for wealthy folks and the bizarre, introverted processes of these artist chefs (but still a beautiful show). Having said that, I…
  • So I had no idea what a DEXA scan was before this post :). I just looked into it though, seems like it could be a useful tool. Yes! So I'm training for some biking event and want to finish 60 days of the Insanity workouts -- they're a bear, but I actually love the intensive cardio/resistance. Also been looking into…
  • Nice. Bought that one. Thanks!
  • Oh and of course I have a picture from my food-heavy Instagram:

  • Great thread. I love quinoa. LITTLE QUINOA PATTIES are my favorite. Cook it in chicken stock. Bring 2 parts of chicken stock to a rolling boil, add 1 part rinsed quinoa. Change heat to simmer. Cover. Stir sparringly for about 11-15 minutes or until light, fluffy, and liquid has evaporated. Put it in the fridge. Then follow…

  • I absolutely love them. What's not the love? They've got a smooth, creamy, fatty flavor. For these these are an essential addition to my lunches and breakfasts. I love them in guac, but also just cut up w/ some salt and pepper.
  • I want to second @pageohana6 -- because for a long while I used to avoid the scale, believing it was "bad" to do a daily weight in. Now I feel the opposite. If you're 35-45 pounds over your target weight, this is the perfect time to start tracking with daily weigh ins (barring an eating disorder -- in which case you should…
  • Just reporting back. Everybody was right. I dropped from that outlier 202 down to 192 in less than a week after getting back on the diet and exercise schedule. Water weight!
  • Yes definitely. Kills my motivation, too. But I have sections of my 20s when I would have met any reasonable definition of alcoholic. Now I abstain from liquor always (and any alcohol most days) but occasionally budget for a good beer w/ dinner out or glass of wine if it's a weekend social event.
  • Awesome. Keep it up!!!
  • I put good balsamic vinegar in all my salads... super low cal and delicious.
  • I've been dabbling with intermittent fasting. A few sporadic 24-hour fasts... but in all honestly they're because I forget to eat breakfast -- work through lunch, and realize it's 3pm and say, "Oh hell, I'll just wait for dinner." I kind of like it though, it's like a hitting a reset button on diet and digestion and I've…
  • Ugh that is the worst. I got food poisoning a few years back and dropped a considerable amount of weight quickly after 2-3 weeks of barely eating -- but I looked terrible.
  • So I actually JUST got back from a 2 week honeymoon. Here was my experience: I work a desk job, so I took this as a great opportunity to go kayaking, horseback riding, running, hiking, biking etc. Lifting and swimming in the morings at the resort gym. I did ALL of those things. It was awesome. I also ate big dinners w/…
  • My goal weight is avg. of 180 and then maintenance in the 175-185 range (with standard fluctuations). I think a few more months of hard work and I can get there.
  • Keep it up. Positive encouragement your way. Seven pounds and a steadily healthy diet and exercise is nothing to be discouraged by (but lots of good advice here, as well). One thing -- try adding an Insanity Max 30 (or something like it) to your mornings. Getting yourself winded with some HIIT training can help you kick…
