  • Slacker workout this morning. I was going to have to take the bus to work today as Darlin' Hoosband had the car for something else. 1550 42:24 It felt beautiful just to swim without pushing hard. While it's a bit irritating that the difference between just relaxing and gliding v. pushing like crazy is really only a couple…
  • I don't use a lot of gear. However, I do know of excellent swimmers that do. When I first got into swimming for exercise as an adult, yes, I did the whole, Free/Back/Breast Lather/Rinse/Repeat thing. It most certainly improved my fitness levels. If you're swimming for a workout, really as long as you can sustain the…
  • 1550 41:43 @emmab0902 @girlwithcurls2 is completely right. Swimming is a tough sport. Sometimes we need some time and space to rest before getting back in. I don't know YOU, particularly, but there are people whom I love quite a bit from whom that sort of talk is also a concern about various mood issues where some TLC from…
  • @ImaWaterBender Yes. You should take Karate. Karate is awesome. Then you should study Ballet. You'll have a Bene Gesserit level of control over your body and you will love it.
  • 39:51 1500 yds. In the "How to make a swimmer giddy" department: Woman in gym: Hey, I was reading Swimming to Antarctica. Have you read it? Me: Oh yeah, it's awesome. Lynne Cox is amazing. Woman in gym: It made me think of you when I was reading it. Me: (a rare moment of speechlessness) Now you guys see my workouts and…
  • 1500 40:17. I am getting to prefer longer freestyle sets. I also mapped out a mile on a lake I like to swim in anticipation of the open water training season. Unfortunately, I won't be getting in earlier than mid-May or so. I'm already chomping at the bit.
  • @mmmpork I do tailor any pants I get just like you. I used to be more pear-shaped than I am now! I sew, but I was hoping to get out of it for a bit because of the big project. I did let out the shoulders a little bit on a jacket I am fond of (IF you sew, look up the Flounce about jacket. It's a great one if you like…
  • *chuckles* Honey, that happens in open water swims for me. I heat up easy.
  • Amazing upper body strength. If your body fat is low enough, nice ab development. My behind is rounder, but my stroke is kinda kicktastic. A really low heart rate. (Even at my size, my resting rate is 64)
  • I don't feel like I've had a good workout unless my hair is hot when I take off my cap!
  • 1500 40:55. Not my most brilliant swim. OTOH, when I'm out in SF Bay, my body will be glad this one HAPPENED!
  • It's made it so I can't buy structured jackets off the rack. I can change the water bottle at work (5 gallons-40 lbs) with ease. My joints don't hurt. As far as getting more photogenic or something? Not so much. I think that's more about diet.
  • I'd actually recommend some lessons from a qualified coach. I know running does have some skills associated with it, but swimming is more like ballet or martial arts in its requirement for proprioceptive* abilities. You'll notice the serious swimmers drill constantly on body position, stroke, form, head position, kick…
  • No swim this morning. Gym closed due to bad weather. I grump... :(
  • 1500 39:50
  • 1450 38:24
  • For what it is worth, I used this exact method to build up endurance, slowly but surely dropping out the easier strokes in favor of the crawl I need to use in open water events. I'm not a brilliant swimmer even now, but I am much better than I was!
  • 1450 38:14
  • 1450 38:35 Better.
  • 1200 31:31 It snowed and we were late out of the gate. I do not complain, as my husband's workout this morning was shoveling so I could have the car to get to the gym. But on contemplating the Ancient Equation (Swimming>NotSwimming) I figured I'd just enjoy a short workout.
  • 1450 41:38 I was out last week with a dental abscess and the garbage surrounding that. The training plan I am on has me bumping up my yardage by 50 yards every week. This is supposed to get me to 10,000 yards a week by sometime in April to train for a six mile swim in the middle of June. I should have been doing 1400 last…
  • I don't do dryland. That doesn't mean I SHOULDN'T do dryland, just that I don't. If were doing what I should be doing, I'd be doing about fifteen minutes worth of bodyweight exercises every night that would include squats, dive-bombers, v-sits, and bridges from my martial arts days.
  • I had some dental issues that required dental surgery. I can start swimming again Monday. (FWIW, anyone who's afraid of the dentist? I cannot recommend twilight sedation enough. It's a beautiful thing)
  • 1350 35:12
  • Okay, that cracked me up! You should time yourself, though. You're probably faster than you think. Anyone who joins the US Masters still has time to do the hour-long Postal swim. I only managed 2200 last year, and I was close to the bottom for my age group. Maybe we should all join and try it Saturday morning. You'd just…
  • Turtles unite!
  • 1350 36:07
  • 1350 36:10
  • Bummer, @emmab0902! I hope it heals quickly!
  • I swim because it's something physical I love to do that I WILL do and I need to work out. I'm pretty heavy (hence the insanely over-inflated calorie burns reported on my exercise!) The reality is you can't realistically exercise enough to overcome the high calorie treats on a regular basis. But if you work out a lot, and…
