I started meditating a year ago. Most days, it's just ten minutes of focusing on my breath -- nothing too exciting. I started when I found out that I'm slightly claustrophobic (MRI) and decided to start meditating to manage the anxiety. The results seemed to be good enough to be going on with. As far as strategies to keep…

I hadn't been training like I should. For some reason the cold water freaked me out enough that I couldn't get in to do my proper open water training for an event. I did finally do it, but did two miles rather than four. And boy was it challenging.

Moisturizer helps a lot!

Yeah, if you need a small snack before your swim, go for it. I do swim fasted most of the time, myself, but I notice a SIGNIFICANT performance difference in my workouts that I have later in the morning after breakfast and a cup of coffee! I'm with @mpeters1965. Eggs do a lot better than oatmeal for me before a swim when I…

*grin* C'mon @nuffer. I'm getting in a lake tonight that's about that temp. You can do it! (If you don't have a heart condition. Don't try then, cause we like you and don't want you hurting yourself)

@aliciamariaq That's wonderful. Thanks for telling us about it. I'm so glad you had such a good time, too.

A SWIMMER IS A HORSEMAN Swimming is licentiously sleeping in sprawling water. is making love with each still operable pore is endlessly being free and inwardly triumphing. And swimming is touching solitude with fingers is with arms and legs telling ancient secrets to the always all-comprehending water. I have to admit that…

Probably you lost your feel for the water. It'll come back pretty soon.

@mightylolo The lifeguard was probably relieved that someone could relax and cough after inhaling water. Unless you're a reasonably experienced swimmer, chances are good that kind of thing panics you, and then the lifeguard has to do his thing. I agree that it's a real pain when your stroke goes all to hell and you start…

I'm not doing a lot of recording here. But I'm swimming. Hoo boy am I swimming. I have a 4-mile open water swim in the middle of June and I am starting to stress.

I don't think there is necessarily such a thing as a cure-all for mood disorders, but I am with you that I do better when I am exercising a lot than when I am not.

A lot of people train with a kayaker escort. I know that's not necessarily an option right now for you. But it does help with the boat traffic issue. That said, I still have a passionate hatred of jet skis.

A sports watch that's waaaayyyy too fancy for my current athletic abilities. But it does keep track of laps and has a GPS for open water.

Right now, I am training to do a four mile swim in June and a mile and a half one in August. Honest? I get in the pool for 2000 yards five days a week. That's about all I do. (I'm slow as hell, so that takes me about 53-55 minutes) When the weather warms up a wee bit, I'll be swimming six days a week. Still with the pool…

My goal is to get my cruising pace at around 60 SPM (trying to become a marathon swimmer, and that's about standard). The best I've done recently is more like 56.

2000 55:46 My pool has a fifty mile club every summer. They call 2000 yards a mile, so I assume they're going for the nautical mile. Open water training can't count; it's only pool miles that do. I signed up for it, anyway. I figure that if I put in 2000 yards every weekday and do open water training on the weekends, I'll…

Eh, I swim slower than the lot of you! 2:39 per 100y and I'm a happy camper. (All I can say is that it's down from 3:02/100, so my missing is getting closer)
-
My stroke rate is a fairly low 54 spm. I'm trying to get that up to the usual marathon swimmer spm of 60. That's tougher than you think!
