I have rotator cuff problems, knee problems, all kinds of MSK problems - will pass on my physiotherapist's advice for free - 8-12 reps > high reps. Bodyweight is ok, but once you're up to 2x20 - that's in a rehab situation, and that's a slow and careful 20, focusing really hard on form, it's time to bump up the weight.…

People come in with their own expectations, but I really wish MFP pushed clear, specific, strongly worded guidance around choosing a calorie goal. Of course most people are going to say they want to lose 2 lbs a week, and if it's a default option (can't remember), they're going to think it's fine for them, since MFP says…

Don't forget, though, that people who are overweight and unfit generally don't feel well. Their bodies aren't functioning optimally. Many really are quite tired - hormonal / IR issues often kick in with obesity even if they weren't there before. And for some of them, the fix for that low energy is often short-term, quick,…

But maybe, it felt hard for a totally valid reason (e.g. missing sleep, recovering from yesterday's workout, not enough fuel, etc.), and your body was right to ease back a bit that day.

I used to feel that way when I could do harder workouts than walking. I still kind of agree, because there are so many posts about having to troubleshoot these devices, but now that I'm doing the most boring stuff possible, I get why people use them. If exercise isn't super motivating, it's not a bad thing to have…

I think it's a case of a specialist not being able to see past his nose. "Gotta fix the bad breathing! What'll fix the breathing? The weight, oh right, ok let's do a little chop chop and fix that right up and the breathing will be good". What's that joke? You cured the disease, but killed the patient. Doctor's affliction.…

Awesome! Glad to hear you've seen results with bands! I think a kit might be likely, for sure, and I'll look out for a heavier band as well. Thanks!

That's really helpful to know! Thank you, ninerbuff! (I can accept that they will eventually die at some point, I just hope it's not while whacking me in the face. No way to know, though, I guess.) There aren't any serious sporting goods stores within a handy distance, but I might see if I can trek out to one on the…

Fads appeal to people because they're extreme. I almost think the weirder the diet the more attractive, for people in certain states of mind. But you couldn't promise a permanent result with any diet. That would be just as suss as the banana thing! Or somewhat suss, anyway.

No, I don't think so. They still have to moderate, and it might be more or less challenging for them for any number of reasons. (By the way, there are lots of ways of moderating!)

Well, some things tend to work for many, like focusing on protein, fat, & fibre to control hunger / promote satiety. I often mention that as a thing to try if someone hasn't already. Similarly (or same thing), moderate to lowish carb (80% of the time, with the remaining 20% in conditional dribs and drabs) works well for…

Ha! 12th Feb! That's a long wait, even by Canadian standards! Shame on them. I hope you find some boots closer to home :) Thank you, Azdak! Rubber stamped as far as I'm concerned :) Let's see if either are available in this kooky country.

I checked it out once - if I recall, the program is high intensity (plyometric / jumping) bodyweight workouts, slow cardio on "off" days, and a lowish calorie diet. So it makes sense that people get quite lean on it. I personally really enjoyed the energy and fun of plyo when I did it (different program), but I think it…

What?? That can't be best or good or even meh practice! Holy moly! He's a doctor but he's not doing a great job of it. No, do not listen to him, get a CPAP for now, talk to your doc, keep doing the great work you're doing... if it were me, I'd write a letter to that office. That is just irresponsible! And yeah, no kidding…

Ha :) Well, I made some half-hearted attempts when I was still with my ex. I didn't really mind how I looked at the time, in part because he didn't mind either, and he stuck around. At least, he couldn't complain too much, because he got his belly eating the same ridiculous dinners. So we were tubby together and that was…

Agree and would add, it helps when people reach a threshold where the activity or its obvious effects are more miserable/stressful than the comfort the activity offers. In health psych, there's this idea about readiness for change ( e.g. here http://psychcentral.com/lib/stages-of-change/ - whoops ok that's about drinking…

Right, but the threat's still pretty nebulous, in a way. As Sidesteel said, each individual instance of indulging, on its own, carries minimal risk, and obviously the action's not aversive in itself. But if a doc did a proper history, and ran a bunch of lab tests and stats, and told me, "tomatoey, if you keep [doing the…

I like the idea of giving people probabilities, if they could be based on decent information. Then again, I ignore the population risk for the habit I need to stop. But maybe it would feel scarier if personal vulnerability (family history, genetics etc) were taken into account. The "next one's going to kill me" conceit…

Although! With a cable machine, the tension is (I think, roughly) constant throughout the movement. With bands, I imagine there's slack until you start extending the band past its relaxed length (so with a 4-foot band, you'd only get tension at 4+ feet). So you'd only get the resistance within a certain range of movement,…

Totally get you! Have you seen this for ideas? http://bretcontreras.com/band-glute-exercises-for-the-win-erin-mccombs-intriguing-training-methods/#comment-1330036

Thank you, Annie! It's good to have that flexibility for both rehabbing and progression, definitely. I like those - I could hook them up to a door and use them like a cable machine for kickbacks and ad/abductions. I think I'm also going to get a couple of pull-up bands for squats (bc of wrist problems; gripping is painful,…

Ah right, thanks! I think they're a US company, which means $$$ for shipping, but it's good to know, maybe I can find a Canadian distributor. Amazon gives me "Functional Fitness" on a search for Iron Woody, hmm, maybe it's a rebrand?

Those approaches are completely opposed! I hope they don't start selling some sort of propriety cheese-dust covered chicken in a vacuum sealed bag.

Ah cool! Support's going to be helpful, I'm sure! I'm doing a sort of Phase 1.5 at the moment - if this doesn't work, I may be there :) So far, I've tried and enjoyed the roast beef rollups with horseradish and the red bean mash (so simple and tasty!) Looking forward to testing out more recipes :)

I'm saying, in my experience, most people on the street prefer money to food. They'll take food, but they usually prefer money. Would you want a half-eaten sandwich or some who knows what coconut cookies, or $1-2 you can combine with other money to get what you actually want? Which in the case of the person you're giving…

You didn't bring it on yourself, that shouldn't happen. But potential for that is reason # 23 I don't have a personal profile pic. (Not saying it would happen to me, but just in case.)

Nobody's perfect. For myself, I give money (which is usually preferred to my sloppy, half-eaten falafel sandwich) when I can and want to. Yup, it's fickle like that, and that's the case for everyone who gives. We make decisions based on nothing. How "right" is it to leave the wellbeing of those who struggle up to the…
-
Go for it if you want to, up to you. For myself, I don't think I did a thing "wrong" when I gained. I'd just been living in an unconscious sort of way, in the default mode that defines the habits of ~69% of North Americans - eating the food that's most easily available, in accordance with social norms; hardly walking (not…

So you don't want to risk failure. You're not where you "should" be, so there's no point. Ok - at least you recognize that that's not productive. What about working to accept the idea that you are a beginner. No one can be great at everything the first time they try it. Also, if you try something that's much beyond your…

I really don't see how a person who uses any of the methods described in the article to lose weight, and maintain that loss for years, in total psychological comfort, has "failed to take responsibility". That accusation is nonsensical (since they clearly have taken responsibility) and is really beside the point, as far as…
