My tip is, get back on track at the next meal. For me "on track" isn't "fewer calories to stay within budget", because if you blow the day with a ridiculous 800 calorie lunch after a 600 calorie breakfast, and are still hungry, eating 300 for dinner is going to feel like punishment. "On track" for me is having a meal that…

It looks like the suggestion is that fitness helps reduce risk in obese people a bit, but that obesity cancels out part of that risk reduction. It doesn't feel like a massive surprise, to be honest. (What about that weirder correlation, that aerobically unfit people were found to be more likely to die of trauma? My…

Unless you've noticed they have a thing for a particular brand or object (like if they only ever wear X pants - and even then, so personal :/) there's no way to know what they'll like or won't. You name it, there's room for error. Even things like water/smoothie bottles. Will they like that kind of lid? Do they prefer a…

Yeah, I mean, it's highly doubtful that changes in muscle mass would be perceptible on a scale, certainly in the short term. It's highly likely that what they're seeing week to week is a temporary pump. So that probability should be made clear. I see what you're saying about some women potentially being put off by the idea…

Yeah there's truth in this to me. Like with my hobbies, they're hobbies, they offer pleasure. I do want to finish particular things, but I don't have a burning ambition attached to them. I do think some of the things are kind of good though (if I may say so) and would *like* to at least complete them. And yeah why not,…

With the strong suggestion that those are rare and special circumstances, usually. Anyway I don't want to make a big deal of it, the scientific discussion earlier was interesting, would like to hear more of what the trainers and lifelong strength people have to say.

Thanks so much, awesome :)

I thought I would *never* be able to go for longer than a few hours without eating, but I have been doing that lately. Not intentionally, it's just because I've been more sedentary than ever in my life (bc another injury) and am just not hungry. If I were active, no way. I don't know how people cope with stomach rumbling…

It's a common trope on the board, though, you can't deny that. The posters who've noted that actually a good amount of beginners are overweight newbies aren't wrong, either. I think results like Sidesteel's client's might be less common, but more people probably are building muscle than MFP dogma allows. Lots of people…

I don't know about that. People like to have friends they're proud of, they get a little ego boost from it. So they like it when you reach your goals. And they like to be encouraging, usually, I find. What people - who don't work out or diet - dislike is hearing others talk about fitness and diet.
-
Very true for me. Talking about my goals is the best way I know to undermine them. Goal-setting at all (again for me), works for some things and not others. For plans and some kinds of work that involve far-off goals and a lot of heavy grind in between, I need a crystal clear goal to get me through tough moments. (Again, I…

+1. If you have no physical restrictions, this is a good place to start. Being in the habit of inactivity leads to more of it, I find :/ Object in motion and all.

Very interesting. Thanks, @yarwell . @sijomial - I see, thank you. Yes, it does seem possible that the contemporary aesthetic might demand a more extreme (& bipolar) approach to eating. (Or probable, since people are getting these effects, and that's how they're going about it.)

I think the idea that it's "impossible" to gain muscle at maintenance or deficit must come from bodybuilding's popular bulk/cut regime - which may be *optimal* for massive muscle growth but probably isn't required to see growth of a few inches. What did people do before before this trend? I'm also curious to know what…

Ah yeah, that makes sense. Thanks!
-
Yeah, that makes sense, but I thought @pollypocket1021 was saying that adults' vitamin D synthesis is worse than kids', no matter how much sun we get. (going back a bit - the solution my derm proposed for the sun protection vs. Vit D conundrum in summer is to expose my arms and legs for 20 minutes a day but keep my face…
-
That's supposed to be the best, in any case, I understand! Certainly for the body. But for the face - is it the same for you with zinc sunscreens? I usually react very strongly to chemical ones, but this (zinc) one, by derma e, is actually ok for me - it's non-nano, too, and not at all greasy. I never react to it, and…
-
Maybe… I don't know, the only people I know who are truly diligent with sunscreen are people of Irish descent who have felt the pain of sunburn pretty directly, multiple times.

+1 You definitely don't have to eat clean, but are you comfortable with and used to cooking, or did you mostly eat out before you started this diet? You can eat out and lose, but it's cheaper to cook and easier to control things. Or maybe a bit more of a structured approach would help kick you off. What are your favourite…

If the first time you've eaten potato skin is after microwave cooking, I think maybe it did not get the best chance to show itself off. Old-school way: get baby potatoes (skins are also softer). Boil water, throw in the potatoes, cook at high boil for ~20-30 mins, drain. Next: sautee them in garlic and parsley; dust with…

Haha, ok :)

Why's that?

Go for -0.5 lbs a week instead of anything more aggressive, much easier to comply. Shoot for a balance (80/20 or 70/30). Go for higher protein/fat/fibre, so you're more full on less, and learn some new recipes. Two helpful ways to deal with the food that gets me off track are - getting single serve portions and eating them…

No, of course not! I'm sorry you experienced that, shouldn't happen. What I mean is that you should definitely not take this as a statement worth a dime about your progress or anything like that. This place has consistently terrible reviews all around, for pushiness, rudeness, lack of customer service, being $$ focused,…

Hmm, looks like it's generally heavy on the upselling there.

+1. +1 Write a letter to the gym owner (it's franchised, right? There should be an owner). I doubt this guy will get fired over this, though. Personally, I wouldn't want to see him again, and I wouldn't feel like twisting my schedule around to avoid him. I'd probably cut my losses and take my money somewhere else. And…

What is the ten-minute secret?? I can't seem to get away with anything shorter than 50-60 minutes (including pre-heating) no matter what. Do you have a convection oven?

yeah, i feel like that's a situation that sets you up for making silly mistakes and maybe injuring yourself. i would definitely avoid swimming while drunk.
