  • Wow! I don't know if it's just the weight loss or if your energy is different (because your self-image must be better), but you actually look a little bit YOUNGER to me in your after pics! Keep it up, and have fun in Maintenance Ville!
  • I'm a big believer in combining the two. Not only do you run the risk of burning muscle (as Eric & Laddyboy said), but remember: Fat stores energy (calories) and muscle burns energy (calories). So, the more muscle you have, the more energy/calories/fat you burn. If you have more muscle you burn more calories just standing…
  • As others said, who says you have to only eat "breakfast food" at breakfast? Are you afraid that the breakfast police are going to show up and cart you off to food jail? You can try PB&J or fruit salad. My wife & I do beans for breakfast every day (we're vegetarians and use them for protein). We honeymooned in Hawaii…
  • I can't give you an official answer for this, but I usually go over on my protein and I don't worry about it. I'm still losing weight... Part of it has been do to the vegetarian meats we eat, and my wife & I are slowly getting them out of our diet in an effort to cut back on processed foods, so that may bring it down a…
  • Maybe not really "motivation," but certainly words to remember while trying to live healthy. From Roddy McDowell as Chuin in the move "Remo Williams:" "Do you know why they call it fast food? Because it speeds you on the way to the grave! He he!"
  • I spent at least one term as Mayor of Nerdsville. It bothered me a bit then, but not now. I suppose that, technically, I'm still a nerd, but seem to have gone beyond the need to label things. Now I'm just me. If you decide that makes me a nerd, that's on you, not me!
  • I'd say it's up to you and how you feel. There are days I stay in my workout clothes for a while because I'm going to have to change later any way. And there are days when I get so sweaty that I can't get my workout clothes off fast enough. Of course, it's a little easier for me. I'm a guy and I usually workout indoors, so…
  • Amazing difference! I suspect the big change with the elliptical is because you started to exercise those muscles, so you were not only burning fat (calories stored as tissue) but also tightening flab (muscle that has lost most--if not all--tone). Whatever you're doing, though, is obviously working!
  • If you want to lose weight to be healthy (and that's the only smart reason to lose weight), then you should avoid such eating plans like the plague. Here's a good rule of thumb: "Diet" comes from the Latin diaeta, meaning "way of life." Any "diet" that you cannot live on as a way of life is not worthy of the name... or…
  • Welcome! Good luck; it's a great program.

  • At the risk of labeling myself as tragically unhip, should I recognize this person? Because I have NO idea who she is... The image was funny, but didn't really do it for me. To each his own, I guess!
  • I think that saying that planking is racist is absolutely absurd, but then I think that planking is absolutely absurd. arhzon said: To a certain extent, I suppose that's true, but I can't imagine having that much spare time to kill and not being able to come up with about a hundred better ways to do it... Oh, and I only…

  • Sometimes your better off with the little guys, because they do care more about their clients: When you're number two, you're trying harder to be number one. When you're number one, sometimes you just get lazy because you think nobody can touch you! But good for you cancelling your membership. That really is no way to…
  • Reading, wriing, drawing, coloring. Building forts out of pillows and blankets (and playing in them). Check local art stores for craft kits that they might like (I've seen kits to build bird houses, Pine Box Derby style cars, dioramas, etc.).
  • Depends on what kind of working out you do. Boys of that age might get a charge out of a "kickboxing" type of workout. They also would probably enjoy walking/running or riding their bikes.
  • Good luck! I've done very well so far w/MFP, and (as I've said elsewhere) it didn't even require major changes in my eating habits, just minor tweaks. You pointed out (correctly) that once you have the info on what you're eating, it's easy to make healthier choices!
  • I'm with szczepj. Looking at your profile, you did nothing but put yourself down! You need to find something good about yourself (and there has to be something, so don't argue with me!) and focus on your positive points. Second, it sounds A LOT like you are eating for emotional reasons. You must stop that! You can't solve…

  • Again, it would help if we could see your food diary, but what are you eating? If you are eating the proper number of calories, but they are EMPTY calories with little or no nutritional value, your body might still go into starvation mode, because without the right nutrients it feels as if it's not getting anything. So,…
  • No wonder you lost weight, you cut off your head! ;-) Seriously, you look great. Good job! Keep it up!
  • I think you may have to be more specific. No more of this, "Everyday I will do some walking." Instead, it should be, "Today I'm going to be on the treadmill from 3pm to 3:30." And it has to be nonnegotiable. Once that exercise time is in your calendar, it has to be as important to you as picking up your best friend from…

  • Drink lots of water. I also find that herbal teas help. Yogi Tea's Healthy Fasting helps me control my appetite.
  • We always hit the produce section for Boston Lettuce, Romaine, and the mixed field greens.
  • Weekly. There's too much variation in the human body on a day-to-day basis for me to trust a daily weigh-in.
  • My only "regulars" are 20-30 min every day walking the dog and kung fu class on Monday and Wednesday nights. Other than that, pretty much every day I hit Exercise TV and find a workout that looks good, usually a whole-body cardio sculpt type of workout. When I feel like it, I mix in some tai chi, chi gong, or Dan Millman's…
  • Looking GOOD! Great job ... Enjoy your trip into "Maintenance land!"
  • My wife & I follow the advice in the 30-Day Diabetes Miracle Cookbook: Eat like a king in the morning, a prince in the afternoon, and a pauper at night. So, we do a big breakfast (usually @ 500-600 cals.), then less for lunch (300-450), and usually just a salad and soup for dinner.
  • Lost 26 lbs in 35 days. Happy with the results so far, but I still have a ways to go before I'm in the "healthy weight" range. My wife & I are on this journey together (which helps A LOT). One thing we've found is that we weren't nearly as unhealthy as we looked; it really only took some minor tweaks to our diet and…
  • Yowza! You're looking faboo, girl! Keep it up!
