  • Cherimoose--thanks for the time on the minimalist running shoes. I've been interested, but always feel like everything I read about them seems pretty one-sided and biased. I'll keep looking. HereWeGo--great tip on the book. I will certainly be checking it out!
  • I have not had a functional movement assessment done. Can you tell me more about it?
  • Laura732--Thanks for sharing your experience. Yes, I do have a desk job and know that it's not kind to my hips...or really anything else. Good point about 5 PT's drawing the same conclusion at the same time as well. I appreciate your advice. JarethG--I'm sure runners do make a lot of money for PT's. And, while I've been to…
  • It's a very individual definition. It's almost like asking someone, what makes you a good person. Personally, I'm a runner because it is my preferred form of exercise, because I've been running since I was 9, because I miss it terribly when I'm sidelined due to injury, because it is the singular activity where I genuinely…
  • I wanted to like them for the convenience factor and because I love sweets. However, I found that I don't like the fake sweetener, aspertame-y, after taste. Heating them in the microwave made them more tolerable but still not something I'll buy again.
  • I'm in the same boat as you--an injured runner who's trying to maintain endurance through swimming while I heal. I don't have any long-term experience, but here's what I have pieced together over the last month from searching a few different sources and consulting with swimmer friends. I swim 4 days per week and follow…
  • Some really great ideas here already. If you have bad weather and get stuck inside, you could have them build and bake their own pizzas. Then bake and decorate their own cupcakes. While their waiting for the stuff to bake you could have a "dance party" or play musical chair or have a scavenger hunt to find treasures you…
  • Thank you, OP, for asking this question. I have been struggling with the exact same thing! Lifting has absolutely taken a back seat to running as I train for my second half marathon. I have a finite amount of time I can exercise on any given day and something had to give as I increased my mileage. Thanks everyone else for…
  • 1:38 for a half?!!? Really?!!? That seems super fast, but I like it! Training has been going really well, so I want to seize the moment, but I'm tentative at the same time.
  • Mondays are speed work days and they're scheduled as follows: 7/21--3X 1000 @ 4:15 + 1X 2000 @ 8:51 7/28--3X 1600 @ 7:00 8/4--10X 400 @ 1:39 (my favorite! I love 400 repeats!) 8/11--2X1200 @ 5:09 + 4X 800@ 3:22 8/18--5X1000 @ 4:15 8/25--6X400 @ 1:39 Wednesdays are tempo days and the schedule for them is: 7/23--5 miles @…
  • It is a big half, The Chicago Women's Magnificent Mile Half Marathon, so I was considering just hanging out with the race pacer. I just need to decide which pacer to hang with. I've been doing 8:10-8:15 pace for a 5 mile run very comfortably since February or so. Longer runs (10+) seem okay at 8:20ish. I've got the…
  • My new normal training pace is about 8:20/mile. I was frequently slowing myself down during my 13 miler on Friday because my target pace was 8:29. When I was paying attention to how I felt and thinking, this is probably an 8:29 pace, I would check Garmin and find that was at 8:20 +/- 2 seconds. Last week I did an 8 miler…
  • Thanks for the tip on pace alerts. It would probably help me a great deal. Despite having 3 decades worth of running experience, I still tend to get too excited at the start of a race and go out too quickly. I do have a Garmin Forerunner 110 that will give me my current pace, but I have to physically look at my watch.
  • I'm a Garmin fan, too. I used Garmin with MMR for several runs because I literally wanted to map my run for future reference. MMR consistently over-estimated the distance I ran, thereby significantly reducing my pace per mile by as much as 15 seconds per mile. I find Garmin to be much more accurate. I will continue to use…
  • This is pretty much where I was. I often do conversationally paced runs at 7:55ish, but I don't want to be out too fast and risk injury. Thanks for the tip!
  • I am guessing that I need to figure out how to slow down a touch, but maybe I shouldn't be that concerned?
  • Super helpful information in this thread! Thanks for starting it, OP. And thanks to all who offered advice. Happy National Running Day!
  • I am following the Run Less Run Faster program. In the app set up, I entered my most recent 5K time, 22:36, and it scheduled the tempo run paces and speed work for me. I am hoping to go sub 1:45:00 in the half.
  • Bump because I'm interested in the responses...
  • I work 50 hours per week and workout about 4 hours per week.
  • I would definitely hike 5 miles for chocolate. I have walked just over 2 miles for it before and have ridden my bike 6 miles to get it when there was none in the house.
  • Outside Soldier Field after finishing the 2013 Soldier Field 10 miler.
  • Friday is Pie Day at my lunch table. I love Pie Day. I make room for it.
  • 2 minutes, 20 seconds--but I WILL get to 3 consecutive minutes. One of my 2014 goals is to plank 3 minutes per day. Right now, I go 2 minutes, 15 seconds, rest for 15 seconds and then eek out the last 45 seconds. When I started I was at one minute intervals.
  • I feel the same way...
  • I'm in! I did a 30 day plank challenge in September and definitely noticed a difference. I have slacked in October and need to get back on the wagon. This is just the push I need!
  • ^^^^^Agree with the regression perspectives. But...any chance you might be anemic? My running partners both struggle with anemia and this is kind of how they describe their experiences when their iron is low.
  • Thanks everyone! My muscles are getting sore and my legs feel like lead, so I know that I definitely pushed hard this morning. I now have the confidence to train with greater focus and intensity for my next 10K so that I go into it with an ambitious goal and renewed competitive spirit. I forgot how great this feels! Silly,…
  • My PBPR (Post-babies personal record) for a 5K is 23:14. Back in my teens I was pretty competitive, running in the 18:00's. I would love to go sub-22:00 again some day...
  • The Moving Comfort Juno bra is my absolute favorite. I run and do a lot of plyometrics, so support is cirtical. I wear a 34DD and the Juno fits true to size. It can be difficult to get on/off the first couple of times you wear it, but after the first 2-3 times, it's perfect. You can find it at Title 9, Road Runner, and…
