count your calories. See what you are eating and how much it is. Once you are conscious of how many calories things are it will change how you eat.

I think mini goals are a good encouragement factor. For instance, I would like to lose about 50 pounds but my doctor wants me to lose 12. I set the 12 as my first goal so I don't get frustrated and am halfway to that goal.
