  • I've been GF for the past few months due to (seemingly) an intolerance. I was getting pains in my hands and leg bones after eating gluten. I have also suffered from debilitating endometriosis, so I was glad to give up gluten. I would suggest to anyone wanting to go completely GF to be very, very careful about eating out. I…
  • I met plenty of weirdos on eHarmony and was about to give up. Then I met my husband. We instantly became best friends and he proposed to me just two short months later. We've been together now for 2 1/2 years and we've been enjoying a wonderful marriage.
  • I agree. Their sandwiches are chock full of sodium. It's scary that you can eat a sandwich there and get your daily limit of sodium! I believe the sodium comes from the meat, but the bread is high calorie too. I used to work at Subway when I was a teenager in high school. I know they aren't always all that clean. Last…
  • I usually snack if I'm hungry. But only if I'm hungry. Otherwise, if I skip a snack and wait until meal time I'm likely to get a headache and feel lousy all day. Pregnant women are advised to eat frequent small meals, so that's what I'm doing =)
  • When I get to my goal weight, I'm going out to buy some sexy lingerie and I'm going to seduce my husband big time!
  • But, if you eat say, 20 g of protein in a 300 calorie meal then you have a higher percentage of protein in that meal than say the same 20g of protein in a 600 calorie meal. What I was trying to say is that the protein percentage compared to the total number of calories in the meal is what counts. Therefore, I was…

  • I used to love to eat cheese. It was one of my favorite things. So much so, in fact, that I couldn't control my serving sizes. So I just cut it out completely :( Still getting used to this. I don't have a lactose intolerance (or so I thought) but when I stopped eating it, my digestion was a lot better. Who knows? I guess…
  • I agree that soy isn't good for a young woman who still gets regular menstrual cycles. As another poster said, soy can alter the amount of estrogen in the body. However, I've heard that soy can help menopausal women with menopause symptoms such as hot flashes which are caused by a sudden drop in estrogen. But yes, a lot of…

  • "You should do some research on the greed and cruelty of Monsanto, which will soon be the only producer of genetically engineer soy beans eliminating even natural soy beans, and how they have deliberately planted their own seeds into private farms to accuse them of patent infringement and drove the farms out of business.…

  • I forgot to add that yes, it's true that you can be vegan or vegetarian and be unhealthy. If you eat a lot of whole grains, fruits, and veggies, along with a multi-vitamin and eat a diet low in bad fats, you will be more likely to have health benefits than someone who claims to also be vegetarian but eats pizza and ice…

  • I spent the first part of my life completely gorged on meat at EVERY meal (my parent's lifestyle choice, not mine). I developed fatty liver from it, and I wasn't even overweight. Of course they were eating high fat bacon, dairy products, ham, pork, beef, etc but it goes to show what excessive meat consumption can do to…

  • Yes, quinoa is expensive. I just substitute it for brown rice in any recipe. I like to use quinoa with a vegetable stir-fry in place of the rice. You don't even need a recipe for it--just toss veggies you have at home in a skillet, cook until they reach your desired texture, add any herbs or seasonings you like, and pile…

  • Dry pasta, just like rice or quinoa, will make more when it is cooked. For example, I believe that 1/4 cup uncooked rice will yield 1/2 cooked rice. Therefore, you can measure your food when it is dry, or measure it as you're putting it (cooked) on your plate but then you just need to select the correct label on MFP.
  • It is becoming really easy to buy low sodium products now. You mentioned beans being a good source of protein but being worried about the sodium. Go to Whole Foods or an organic Co-op and look for "no sodium added" beans. I recommend Eden Organics, because their cans also are BPA free. Fish is another great source of…
  • Whole grains. Oatmeal and hot cereals. Any fruit or veggie from my organic CSA.
  • Good for you! I completely believe that a good diet can change your mood and well-being. I've struggled with a lot of negativity too, and when I switched to eating all organic, plant-based foods I felt soooo much better. I became a better wife, more clear-minded, more organized and motivated, and I feel much more hopeful…
  • I think that binging, then fasting would mess up your metabolism and send your body mixed signals. I know that if I didn't eat for day, I'd feel sick with a migraine because of low blood sugar. If you go without eating for day, you might feel really poorly and then end up eating MORE the next day. Remember that it takes…
  • Make sure you take extra time grocery shopping and read all the labels carefully. I've found that that helps me. Dairy and meat have a lot of saturated fat in them, so it may be important for you to choose low-fat or non-fat dairy or lean meats. Beware of going low- or non-fat with dairy though as that sometimes mean it…
  • I've just started meditation classes and I believe they help me feel more at peace and more at tune with my physical body. The class I go to is a very light yoga/chanting/and meditation class so it incorporates all three. My husband goes with me, and he feels relaxed by it too.

  • As someone else said, a serving of veggies is actually quite small at 1/2 a cup. I eat a mostlyplant-based diet, so my meals are planned on what delicious, fresh, organic veggies I have in the fridge. I find that when I stopped making my meals revolve around a piece of meat, it was so easy to eat plenty of fruits and…
  • I think I would get tired of eating the same thing for lunch every day. But I get what you're trying to do by cooking ahead of time. What I do is make several servings of dinner and then use them for leftovers the following day. You can make just about anything you like =)
  • Are you wearing good shoes with arch support?
  • Hmm, I am convinced healthy choices at Chinese places do not exist. Everything is skyrocket high in sodium and may contain MSG. Add to that that everything is smothered in sauce and you're probably looking at a ton of calories. I think the Chinese food sold in the U.S. is junk food. I'm convinced "real" Chinese food must…
  • Yay for you! What really impresses me is how balanced your diet journal is. Many people try to lose weight by eating very few calories, but you're doing it the healthy way. You'll be much more likely to be successful in keeping your weight off long-term. It's so refreshing to see someone who cares for their body and their…
  • Chips, omg, I love salty snacks like chips. I take my husband grocery shopping with me and I tell him to just tell me no to buying them! And yogurt covered pretzels. I only eat a few of those, but the calories add up fast!
  • Biking is good for the knees. When I started bicycling, I thought that it would hurt my knees because of the repetitive motion, but then I read online that bicycling actually helps to nourish the cartilage near the knees, thereby strengthening the whole joint. Worth a try if the repetitive motion doesn't hurt you in the…
  • Don't worry about it. My weight fluctuates up to 4 lbs throughout the day, probably because of water weight. I just weigh myself first thing in the morning and avoid doing it later in the day. You're a woman, so you need to remember that we ladies fluctuate in weight/water all during our menstrual cycles, not just right…
  • I've only lost about 5 lbs, but my husband swears that he has noticed the difference. I think it depends on where and how you carry your weight. I'm doing a lot of exercise so I'm getting a more toned, lean look even if the actual pounds coming off are few. My mother commented on how great I looked after I lost ten lbs…
  • I stay motivated for my health. I think of food as medicine for my body. When I eat food, I think of the vitamins and minerals that are in that food and how it can nourish my body. I think of living a long life together with my husband. I remind myself that by exercising and eating well, I am reducing my chance to get…
  • I eat brown rice, I'm not Asian, and I'm still losing weight. I don't eat it every day, but I eat a serving of it at dinner several times a week. But since you want to cut down on it, I would try a health food store or co-op. They have all kinds of interesting grains in bulk bins so you can only buy what you really want.…
