  • Boil in salt water for 5-8 minutes. Eat as a snack by popping the beans out of the pod while they're still hot.
  • If brussels sprouts smell bad, you've either overcooked them (overcooking them releasing sulfur compounds from within the sprout), or you've bought some yucky old ones from Mexico out of season. Brussels sprouts are in season in the U.S. in the fall, and taste the best when the buds are small and tight, harvested right…
  • It sounds weird, but they're amazing pickled! They taste like dilly beans if you combine them in a jar with garlic and dill weed/seed. They're also good raw, shredded coarsely in a food processor and used as the base for a vegetable salad. I eat the small, crisp ones raw with dill-flavored dip too.
  • I don't eat dairy, and I'm still overweight. Non-organic dairy is full of nasty stuff though so if that's what you've been eating, for health reasons, it might be better to switch to organic or give it up.
  • I never get the flu shot, and I haven't gotten the flu since I was 6. Hand-washing, plenty of rest, and a healthy diet are still, in my opinion, the best ways to fight illness. I've often wondered just what kind of crap solution those shots are in.
  • I currently take medication for hypothyroidism. My TSH levels are normal now, but I still have all the symptoms of hypothyroidism and really, REALLY stubborn weight loss. Feel free to add me; I'd be glad to help support you in any way I can.
  • The monounsaturated fats in avocadoes lower your LDL cholesterol, while raising your HDL cholesterol. Every healthy diet needs to include healthy fats. Avocadoes taste delicious - mashed up, I use them as a replacement for conventional salad dressings, which are much less healthy.
  • You can use the stems of herbs to flavor rice or other grains.
  • You can and should visit your doctor, but I wouldn't be too optimistic about them helping you get to the bottom of the problem. In my experience, they'll just throw more birth control pills at you...
  • Very well said! I left MFP for awhile, in part because of the pervasive negativity. It's just such a drain to read people battering upon each other. I've used Spark People too, and oddly enough, there are very few rude, condescending remarks in that community. Even now that I'm back using MFP, I still try to stay away from…
  • Thanks for the recipe...now if only zucchini were in season :(
  • Lol, isn't this just part of daily life activity?
  • I'm looking for motivational friends too. My friends list right now is a bit quieter than I would like, and my calorie intake is sneaking up with the great weather so I need the extra encouragement! Anyone who likes to provide motivational support on a frequent basis can add me and expect the same encouragement in return!
  • They look doughy. What is the texture like?
  • Yes!
  • It looks like you don't have much left to lose. Your weight is already down pretty low. If that's the case, you might consider changing your settings to lose only 1/2 lb a week. As others have said, you're probably not eating enough for your weight.

  • Mine are smaller too but I prefer them now because they're more shapely and less fatty looking. In my mind, this is the size my chest was meant to be (if I hadn't gained weight). The bright side...they won't droop and sag so much when you get older! You'll look younger longer =)
  • Thanks for sharing your story! I don't know why so many people are afraid of whole, natural foods like fruits. It is very inspirational to me that you were able to get off your insulin. Your ticker is amazing! Congratulations!!
  • No problems with shins, fortunately. I do occasionally have discomfort (after doing Level 2) on my legs, right above my knee cap. For this reason, I am not doing it every day non-stop. I had problems with my ankles after doing so many jumping jacks on Level 1. I found relief by taking breaks and exercising barefoot. I wish…
  • I count it because my lifestyle settings are set at sedentary. I have a 9 week old puppy who is not yet acclimated to taking daily walks, so that's the other reason I count it (because it's not a daily activity for me). I don't, however, eat back those exercise calories. Since he's a puppy, he can't walk very far anyway…
  • If a recipe called for 1/4 cup of black beans, I would go by volume. If the recipe called for 4 oz of black beans, I would go by weight. The label should imply which unit of measurement to use.
  • This site, even though it's a great resource, really promotes an obsession with food, especially if you use it long-term. Calorie counting is very tedious. I was becoming too reliant on thinking about food all the time, so I took on a short fast. I have the freedom now to think of other things and my hope is that when I go…
  • Try peeling them. I love beets! They're very nutritious. I don't eat them every day though, only when they're in season.
  • Shedding my health issues before they become bigger problems! Living as comfortably and healthfully as I can so that I can enjoy a life that lives up to its potential (longevity, quality of life, etc). Looking great, but more importantly, feeling great! Certain activities don't wind me as much as they used to and I feel…
  • What about going to the gym with a partner or a friend? It would make the experience more enjoyable for you and you might feel less self-conscious. Do you have someone you'd like to join you? When I joined a gym, my husband did too and we motivated each other. It became a nice way to spend time together.
  • When I started exercising again, I was very tired. Like, tired enough to take a nap mid-afternoon. Personally, I don't think it had anything to do with diet--more to do with exerting my body so much more than it is used to. It sounds like you're giving your body a challenge. You'll probably be fine relaxing if you need it…
  • I hope you mean hummus, and not humus =) I definitely wouldn't want to eat that!

  • Ten lbs a month is an awesome weight loss! Especially since you only exercise 2-3x a week and only cook 25% of your own meals. There are tons of great websites for recipes, but most of the time I don't really use recipes. I just make up my own healthy meals out of seasonal food I have around the house. It doesn't take that…
  • Vitamin A is only in animal foods, huh? Lol. Tell me then how I ate only plant foods yesterday and logged in over 600% daily value in Vitamin A. Ever heard of kale? Carrots? And vitamin D? Technically you don't need to consume it in your diet if you get outside frequently enough. Your skin can produce more than you need in…
  • Wow! Not only are you much thinner and healthier looking, you look like you've dropped about 10 years in age!
