Yeah, I know a lot of guys who refer to building muscle as just putting weight on, and therefore aim to put weight on. If he started with "hey good looking" he probably meant it as a positive thing.

If you feel like you're not getting enough food, you can always bump up your calories a little bit. The fact is that if you're eating below maintenance, you will lose weight, just at a slower pace. If your clothes are fitting bigger and you're losing inches, then you're likely gaining muscle.
