I'm surprised by some of the responses to this question. Drinking alone and using alcohol to "help" with sleep are two big red flags. I think the original poster is right to be concerned. The question is not if the OPs husband is an alcoholic, it's more about whether there is a pattern of problematic drinking. We can…

Rounding down to a quarter mile, I got in 2 1/4 miles between a treadmill walk and the stationary bike. 20 miles so far in September!

I'm pretty obsessed about logging my food. It is a healthy obsession to have, in my opinion. Given that I reached my goal weight 13 months ago and have stayed there, I intend to stick with what's working! Nothing anyone says is going to keep me from doing that. I could see your partner getting annoyed with this "healthy…

Congratulations on your results. Stay with it!

Ha, I love your outlook, doesntplaynic! I married my dear wife 10 years ago in a civil ceremony at the courthouse. Regrets=ZERO. The people who posted that these decisions are for you and your spouse alone are correct. My wife and I are lucky: I was very forthcoming with her about what I did and did not want to do and she…

Rested yesterday as planned, didn't try for too much tonight on the treadmill. +2.25m walk/jog for a total of 15.25m in September.

9/4 - I logged 8 miles in a long gym workout: 2.1m walk/jog, 4.75m stationary bike, 1.15m elliptical. This was my third day in a row for exercise so tomorrow will be a rest day! I'm enjoying everyone's updates. :)

Leo "on the cusp" of that sign and Virgo. I cannot say I've ever put a lot of stock in that astrology stuff. :)

Hi all, I've been active on MyFitnessPal since spring of 2011 and I reached my goal weight in August of 2011. After getting thin and keeping off the weight for over a year my new focus is on getting truly fit! I'm shooting for 40 miles this first month but I'd be thrilled to blow that goal out of the water. One of my…

I don't cheat on my diet, or in logging my diet. When it comes to estimating my portion size if anything I will overestimate the amount consumed. I try to record an honest account of calories burned through exercise. None of this is to say that I never have a day when I exceed my daily allotment of calories. I certainly do…

I went cold turkey as well a little over seven months ago. The first few days sucked and I had a nasty case of "smoker's flu" in the second week but this went away after a couple of days. It got progressively better after that. Sleep has been easier to come by, especially since I'm not drinking now either. I'm not getting…

Since my neighbor *never* farts, maybe this explains why she's in such good shape!

Thank you! Part of it is small town/small world but my workplace is the gossipiest place you've ever seen. At the end of the day, I don't think the South has the market cornered on polite people. "Yes sir" and "yes ma'am" only goes so far. Overall, the South would be better off if her people were a smidge more open-minded.

No lack of confidence here. Fight the power!

Only yesterday my neighbor told me and my wife that she never farts. Not that she doesn't bend over and let 'er rip right in front of her husband, but that she DOES NOT fart. Personally, I think her assertion is ridiculous - - is it biologically possible to never fart? I find myself, once again, wondering why this is such…

Ding! Follow the money. Corn (and therefore, high fructose corn syrup) is massively subsidized, which is why it winds up in virtually everything on the shelves. We even put corn (ethanol) in our cars! I also agree with those who pointed out that when one considers healthcare costs as a result of heart disease, diabetes,…

I grew up in Indiana and have lived in Alabama for the last 10 years. I can say that people here are no nicer than people I've met anywhere else. In fact, if you are not from this part of the world and you move here later, it is remarkably hard to meet new people and make friends. The first question people ask you here is…

James, I'm sorry to read that you're having such a tough time. The good news is that you are committed to healthy living, including working out. That's a big plus. If you're not ready for counseling at least consider adding some other elements to your plan, like watching your diet and practicing meditation. These are but…

What she said. I don't understand it at all, but to each his own.

My #1 piece of diet advice is to stay true to recording your intake in a journal. It's not so much about getting an exact calorie count as it is accountability to ones self, and re-teaching yourself how to eat healthily. My #1 piece of fitness advice: listen to your body. Steady wins the race when you're starting out, so…

The recipe idea is a good one but my practice tends to be more in line with bathsheba: I try to get a reasonable calorie count every day, knowing full well that I cannot get an exact number. I usually estimate the milk in my coffee or tea to the best of my ability. I do record things like teas and sweeteners, even when…

I agree with those who write that slow weight loss is not a bad thing. It took me about two years to lose 20 pounds and I was still 10 pounds shy of my goal weight. I just couldn't shake that last 10 until I found this site. I finally got there after another two or three months. The pay off is this: I have been able to…

I try not to obsess over getting an exact calorie count every day. That's what I thought this was about when I started logging everything. What I have found though, is that keeping a log has helped me identify my pitfalls (for me it's Mexican food and pasta) and to re-learn how to eat a healthy diet. Ballpark figures will…

I'm in the same stage of my life tc as I'm turning 39 this year. While I've never been severely overweight I have been out of shape for most of my adult life. I am happy to write that by focusing on my health for the last couple of years I have had more energy and have been happier than I ever thought possible. My words to…

It says 175 but I've been at 165 for nine months thanks to MFP. :)

For me too. Thankfully, I'm doing well with the diet part so I'm not adding weight. But I'm also not losing the flab!
