  • Correct, it only adjusts your calories. If you are doing something that it doesn't track well (pretty much anything other than walking / running) you can log your exercise as normal in MFP and when you provide the duration and time of the exercise it will sync back to fitbit and remove the calories it has added in favor of…

  • You might want to check out http://www.bikeforums.net - they have a section of regional forums where you'll probably get more appropriate eyes on your post since you're asking about something in a particular area
  • They also make cycling underwear so you could wear that and your regular work clothes.
  • Generally speaking, I'd go with the one that has the most information to go on; which is usually the HRM. That said, there's lots of things that can affect your heart rate that don't really increase the calories burned -- Heat / Humidity for example. If the HRM is new make sure it's being consistent with itself - if it…
  • Some things it does better than others; it's really good at walking and running and the further the exercise is from that the worse it gets. When cycling for example I use my HRM and when I log it on MFP the program replaces the calorie burn the fitbit detected with what I'm logging (when you link a fitbit to a MFP account…
  • I think a lot of people are misunderstanding the 3500-4000 calorie thing - that's not activity only; that's including the number of calories needed to just keep the organs working and lights on 24 hours a day in addition to activity. I've gotten myself down to about 260 but I'm 5' 10" and my daily figure is around 2900. On…
  • Runmeter might do that with the pro version http://abvio.com/runmeter/
  • I went with the Flex because the form factor is something I'm more likely to get use out of (I'd be leaving the One in my pants pocket every time I changed my clothes). Also the one thing I liked about it - the altimeter - seems to not be that accurate since the company stopped including them in designs because of accuracy…
  • If you want to track your steps you can do it under Check-in (or progress I think on an app). You can add whatever you want and track it there.
  • I'm hoping we can get out riding every weekend this month so I'm going to post our successes here to help motivate us as well: Sept 1, 2013 Ride Link: http://walkmeter.com/2894a3c24b2a30ac/Cycle-20130901-0948?r=x Distance: 19.16 miles Average Speed: 14.08 mph Fastest Speed: 26.48 mph Ascent: 673 feet Descent: 676 feetSept…
  • Sitting - stand when you need to for power though (sometimes called Honking)
  • Here's a few pics from our favorite ride: Mill Creek Metroparks Bike Trail: A little of the scenery: Currently one end of the line (more will be added as land deals go through -- eventually this trail will extend from the Ohio river to Lake Erie, a little over 100 miles)
  • I've heard that the calorie estimations for bicycling are vastly overestimated. I generally look at several estimates and pick the lowest. I have an Edge 305 bike computer on my bike (cadence, speed, rudimentary gps pathing), I use walkmeter on my iphone (set for cycling), MFP's estimate, and my heart rate monitor. They're…
  • I used it a couple of times and liked how it graphed some things like the speed zones, but I didn't see any particular advantage over Walkmeter (or cyclemeter but we already had walkmeter) so I'm sticking with walkmeter. It looks like if you don't want any of the premium features it would be ok, but if you were thinking…
  • FYI: there's a road / mountain bike group on here also: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/forums/show/361-bicycling-road-and-mountain
  • To follow up: Gatekeeper is awesome and in my opinion, left side is better than right side. Other coasters I couldn't fit were the Top Thrill Dragster (No great loss imo) and the Millennium Force (Which I was hoping to ride). All three of those seem to require about a 40" waist or less because I was 6-8" from getting the…
  • I am 5'10" approx 260 right now with a 46" waist and 50" chest. I'm currently at cedar point and was concerned about fitting. So far the only thing that was a definite no-go was the wicked Twister. No way can I get that side belt clasped Wrt the new Gatekeeper - I was close and the attendant at the test seat told me to…
  • Honestly, as someone who has read the books, I'm surprised at how tame that was. It's still possible for some of the atrocities to be shown next episode I suppose though. I expected everyone was going to be screaming about Arya today.
  • Some of these are a bit tandem-specific but Is that a bump? Looks like it might be a bump, oh #%# it is a bump and it's too late to call it — spoken "Sorry!" Can I pass that group of _______s up ahead before that oncoming racer gets to them or do I call out to just hang out until we can pass Stoopid wind Stoopid hill Is…
  • Assuming your HRM is generally accurate (does it have a chest-strap?) I'd go with that; Does your app on the phone know your weight, age, etc. . .? I use a polar FT7 and Walkmeter on my iPhone and they're usually pretty close. Walkmeter does ask for my stats. I would think that a HRM would trump an external device because…
  • If your set up recommended amount is 1540 that alreay has a deficit built in; if you don't eat the exercise calories back you're making that deficit larger which may not be good depending on how much you have to lose. Hoping once we move I'll be able to ride to work when the weather permits. (Although I'll have to buy a…
  • Great! definitely sounds like some sort of nerve issue - Gloves might help if you didn't wear any.
  • Just found the group, here's our tandem (doubles as a progress pic):
  • If it's an isolated movement, like alternating curls, I just count that one dumbbell weight. If it's a unified movement, like squats and deadlifts, I total the weight. ETA: it's just a benchmark for you though so whatever method you want to use that works for you is best .
  • Probably padded shorts will do more good for you than a overly padded saddle - as you get used to it you'll probably start to prefer a more stiff, narrow saddle. But yeah your sit-bones are going to hurt when you first start out. You might also consider gloves. Just take it easy and keep at it, you'll probably start to…
  • My wife and I have made cycling part of our exercise, although it's not the majority due to weather concerns. in the last couple years in the summer we've been out there pretty much every weekend on the trail and that's helped a lot. We weren't serious about weight loss until 2011 after my wife had a stroke (nothing to do…
  • If you're doing TDEE-20% then that is your deficit and you wouldn't eat exercise calories. Something you said confused me though TDEE by itself isn't a deficit it's the top end of what you need to do with your expected activity.
  • When I was a consultant the farthest I drove for a client was 90 miles or so - just over 90 mins. Most of the time my clients were about 45 miles away so just over an hour. Now i'm driving 150 miles at the beginning of the week and staying in an apartment while i'm moving.
