Yes I agree. I rarely eat any of the extra calories from exercise. I make a point of eating three nutricious meals a day but I won't force myself to eat more when I'm not hungry. I have not tuned in to the whole debate thing about the wisdom of eating or not eating the extra calories earned by exercise. I have been…

Hey smiles! Welcome back. I had feared that you weren't completely well yet when you hadn't posted for several days. Sorry to hear you had the relapse. Hopefully you are now on the mend. I laughed when I read you had gone running despite everything. I admit I get impatient quickly with being sick and I've done the same…

I do understand the temptation to cling to the idea because of course it makes perfect sense logically that when people are awake they should be burning more calories than when they are asleep. But it infers that just because someone eats more calories they are going to burn more calories. A person who say has a…

My Daily Check-in: Completed Day 4, Week 3 of my RW 8-week program which was a walk only day. Probably from the extra hiking I have done over the past couple of days I was feeling a little soreness in my lower back and calves so it wasn't difficult to avoid the temptation to do anything more than the program requirements…

There are lots of myths associated with dieting and the timing of when a person eats is a very common point of contention among dieters as a result. Personally I figure doctors and registered dieticians are more qualified to dispense accurate information so no offense but I'll stick with their opionion that it doesn't…

Hi Karin, Yes, I noticed there hasn't been a lot of posting lately. I have thought about joining in with one of the runner's threads but haven't so far. I won't really think of myself as a runner again until all the walking is behind me and I am running all the time for my workouts so I may wait until I finish my run/walk…

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the time of day you eat has no effect on how the body uses calories. The overall number of calories consumed and burned over the course of 24 hours is all that effects weight. The CDC site has lots of good information on weight loss and achieving a healthy…

I've always found it easier to develop pace sense by training with a heart rate monitor. It eliminates a lot of the guess work and fine tunes a sense of pace based on perceived excertion. As far as improving as a runner, I recommend reading the book "Daniel's Running Formula" by Jack Daniels. I've been a runner for years…

Sweet! Yep it is always nice when someone else notices, especially a significant other. :)

Of course any kind of physical activity burns calories and crunches are no exception. But unless you are going to do an extremely high number of them over an extended period of time, I’m not sure the number of calories burned would be worth tracking. The factors that determine calories burned are intensity, duration, the…

My Daily Check-in: Completed Day 3, Week 3 of my RW 8-week program with a 5 minute walking warm-up and 5 minute walking cool down. I have come to look forward to exercising but felt a little lethargic this morning and literally had to force myself out the door. Predictably it wasn't a great workout but it was all the more…

Definitely get some running shoes. Bad shoes can really cause a lot of problems especially as mileage increases. There is a better than even chance that it is the shoes that have caused the problem. There are two muscles in the shin area that new runners often develop problems with. The anterior tibialis muscle and the…

My Daily Check-in: Completed Day 2, Week 3 of my RW 8-week program. Today was a walking only day. I did a half hour walking the perimeter of my apartment complex. I live in a pretty large complex and so walking at a moderate pace it takes about 15 minutes per lap. I like to walk here occasionally because the complex is…

With the heart rates you mentioned I think your estimate of 300 calories burned during 30 minutes of cardio is reasonabale. I have an HRM but didn't use it the first two weeks after I started here. I just used the calorie burned estimates from the exercise database on the site. I lost weight during that time and so those…

Yes, I will be careful. :) I have been faithfully following the plan up until today and I know I can't push things all the time at this stage. Today was challenging but definitely doable and it was nice to feel pleasantly fatigued like the old days. Tomorrow I have an easy day of just walking so I'll have a chance to rest…

I fell a little short last week too but I agree participating in the challenge is very helpful because otherwise I wouldn't have burned as many calories as I did. And every week there is a new opportunity to succeed! :)

I have a Polar F11 and love it. It works for any sport and gives high and average heart rates, time in zones, calorie count, etc. Wasn't very expensive and does the job.

Just go to "Community" and click on "Signature." The code for your ticker will appear in the signature box. Delete the code and click save. Your ticker will be no more. :)

My Daily Check-in: I never intended to take a rest day exactly even though my RW 8-week program called for it today. I was planning a leisurely 30 minute walk instead. Yet less than 8 minutes into my walk I was feeling good and strong and it was a spectacular, sunshiny and warm Texas spring day so I decided to eschew the…

First, it is best NOT to stretch before running. Stretching cold, tight muscles is an easy way to pull something. But stretching after running is certainly a good practice. Here are five good runner stretches to get you started. http://www.halhigdon.com/15Ktraining/Stretch.htm

Interesting article but my take on it is that it simply makes a case for the fact that people who never weigh themselves tend to gain weight which I think is a no-brainer. After not weighing myself for a year I was certainly shocked to discover how much I did weigh and that was a big part of what led me to start trying to…

No, that is one of the big differences between the RW program and C25K. With RW there is just one rest day per week, but ever other day you just walk. So out of seven days, there are four days where you alternate running and walking, two days of just walking and one day of rest. I think I can guess why C25K includes so…

My daily check-in: Today I completed Day 6, Week 2 of the RW 8-Week Beginning Runner's Program with a 30-minute run/walk session during my lunch hour at work. Today was the same as yesterday's running 4 minutes/walking 1 minute x 6 times. Felt a bit easier today than yesterday . For the program, tomorrow is a rest day so…

Well I came up short for Week 1 and only managed 2984 but I started the challenge near the end of my week so I'm determined to get 3500 this week. This was actually the most calories I've burned from exercise since starting mfp so it was motivating. :)

My daily check-in: Today I completed Day 5, Week 2 of the RW 8-Week Beginning Runner's Program with a 30-minute run/walk session during my lunch hour at work. I am up to running 4 minutes/walking 1 minute, 6 times. The program was very easy at the beginning but is now getting more challenging but it is manageable and I am…

That's awesome Karin! About the shoes I mean....sorry to hear you caught a bug. I'm glad you found a great running store and it sounds like you're all fixed up once you get well. :)
