  • I'm no scientist, but that sure sounds like BS to me. You should read some of the actual science on fasted exercise, actually. Here is one such summary, though I've read more: http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/12/15/phys-ed-the-benefits-of-exercising-before-breakfast/?_php=true&_type=blogs&_r=0 If I'm working out first…
  • I lost 60 my first 6 months, another 60 my second 6 months, and the last 10-15 over the final three months (training for a 10-mile race, I purposely ate more and slowed down weight loss so I could handle the long runs). How I did it isn't sexy but it worked: - logging my calories most of the time (a day or two off a month…
  • you'd be wasting some time and you'll have better results with rest/recovery built into your program. (1) recovery is when the building takes place. (2) without rest, you won't be lifting as much as you could. Take it from Lyle: http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/training/the-importance-of-rest.html
  • It's not a replacement for a pizza with a proper crust, but we have made it several times for another option and it's pretty tasty. Just make sure to squeeeeeeeeeeeeze out as much water from the cooked, riced cauliflower before proceeding, and spread it thin.
  • This is what I do :) Works so well and it's made maintenance feel almost effortless!
  • I'd go up 200 this week, then the remainder the following week. stay off the scale at first! You might see some initial weight gain. Don't worry, it's not fat. After a month at the new level you'll have a good idea if your new goal is working.
  • Snowshoes and cross country skis have turned my winter around. Minneapolis (and surrounding areas) have so many great ski areas. Woodlake Nature Reserve in Richfield has a free loop and ski rentals are cheap there ($8) if you don't have any. It's a fantastic workout and you warm up so quickly that it can be done even in…
  • This. Eliminate virtually all carbs between then and now and you'll drop it. You'll gain it back instantly once you eat carbs again, though.
  • 133 pounds lost and I never plateaued. I had a few weeks with less weight loss, but my overall average for the 15 months I was in loss-mode was still right around 2 pounds a week. Right now I'm in a perpetual plateau. I haven't lost any weight in 17 months. But that's because I'm eating at or around maintenance :) Funny…
  • Congrats :) Here's to the beginning of your running career! Can't wait to see you post "I JUST RAN TEN MILES". I felt like shouting that one from the rooftops.
  • If you're still logging starchy veggies (eh, and roots I guess), I think you're fine. I can't imagine you'd have any trouble considering those "free" foods, because they aren't calorie-dense in the least. I do log vegetables but that's mostly so I can track my micros.
  • I used an Omron hours before a Bodpod test, and they were within 1% point of each other. That doesn't mean either is accurate, however, but my handheld Omron is tracking trends and that's what matters most.
  • (1) it's not sustainable. (2) adequate calorie intake better assures adequate nutrition. (3) food is good. I suppose my response to you is if you CAN eat more and still lose weight, why not eat more? From my own personal experience, huge deficits did NOT lead to faster weight loss. Instead they led to binges. A reasonable…
  • Sedentary maintenance for a 5'11", 245 pound 20 year old male is about 2829. This is based on generic formulas, but is a ballpark figure. http://www.fitnessfrog.com/calculators/tdee-calculator.html A 1,500 deficit is huge. I know I couldn't maintain that for any length of time, at least not happily or healthfully. If you…
  • this x 1000. You may be dealing with plantar fasciitis. I'm currently dealing with nasty arch pain. I saw a sports medicine MD who dx'ed plantar fasciitis in both feet, as well as flat feet. I'm in Superfeet insoles, even in my slippers, and seeing a physical therapist. (side note: I almost never have the telltale heel…
  • Congrats! You look wonderful. GREAT work. And also, you're completely over-the-top adorable. What a great smile :)
  • I'd never track calories on a vacation. I try to make good choices so it's not an all-out food fest but I don't sweat it. If something looks good, I eat (or drink) it. Vacations are for having fun and enjoying yourself, so eat good food, do active fun things (snorkeling, walking, etc). When you get home, get back on the…
  • I am down 130+. I do have some loose skin and I don't really care. I look great in clothes, and I'm comfortable enough with my self and my body to feel confident in a bikini, loose thighs and stomach aside. If I'd never been 300+ pounds, I wouldn't look like this. But I WAS, so this is my body, and I'm proud of what I've…
  • I saw your posts when I first started here in June of 2011, and you inspired me then. You continue to inspire me now, even after I've reached my own goal weight and am working on two years of maintenance. Thank you for continuing to share your example of lifelong health.
  • Gold Standard Whey Double Rich Chocolate is my usual, because it mixes fine with water for convenience but still tastes good (and is quite good with milk, actually). I recently tried Truetein samples and LOVED Cinnabun and Banana Cream. Both were awesome.
  • I wish I was willing to post the pics here but I'm not. The difference between the day I hit my goal weight and one year later is pretty crazy. I am the exact same weight in the photos, but everything is tighter - butt, thighs, stomach. Give yourself some time. For me, I attribute it mostly to weight lifting.
  • +/- 5 pounds. I learned while losing that a 5 pound fluctuation after anything out of the ordinary (more carbs/salt than usual, holiday, heavy workout, hormonal fluctuation) is perfectly normal for me. In 16 months of maintaining, I've actually never been above that range, though I have been below it once. Truthfully my…
  • All of this. I get a fair number of friend requests. If I accepted every request I got, I'd have 999 friends (which is the max allowed, I believe). This is not because I'm special, but because I've lost a lot of weight, posted a few success stories threads, and people have sent requests. I'd love to accept them all. But…
  • In the unlikely event that I combine them, this is my priority. On rare occasions if there is a cardio class I want to attend and it works with my schedule, I might lift after but that's an exception. Weight training has always been my priority from day 1.
  • Along these lines, I subscribe to Cooking Light magazine. It has a lot of real food recipes and I cook a lot from it each month. This month was the start of a great article about the power of group weight loss plans, referencing MyFitnessPal. Great stuff, like get a food scale, have a plan, "lose weight without giving up…
  • This is fantastic stuff. Thank you for posting this.
