  • No, it was on the breathing side. I'm hoping it's mostly sorted out now as long as I don't do too much fast distance swims too many days in a row. I can do a 29-minute mile, but I shouldn't try to do a 145-minute 5-mile swim.
  • Mine stores 200 laps and gives you totals & average times beyond that.
  • I like the clock function because I can easily identify the the laps where I forgot to click the lap counter. My laps are around 50 seconds, but when I see 1:40 or 2:30 I realize that I did 2 or 3 laps at that point. Occasionally I forget to click the counter and sometimes I think it does not register because the button is…

  • Good job. It varies quite a bit. Many here are daily swimmers. At the other extreme, after a very long swim (3-6 miles), it is not unusual for me to take a week off. I need to be careful to to exacerbate shoulder/elbow issues that surfaced last year. Other weeks, I might do 2-3 miles about 3 times a week. Depends on the…
  • Thanks, Juliet! I also saw this tip in the daily thread:
  • I'm gonna try this to help me learn bilateral breathing. Any other tips to help with learning bilateral breathing? Thanks!
  • In the meantime, does anyone have any tips on helping an old dog learn bilateral breathing?
  • If I ever get a sports watch, I will find out what my stroke rate is.
  • That's rough. A long-misdiagnosed running injury of mine eventually required major reconstructive foot/ankle surgery that limits my range of motion and prevents me from running. That was the last step in my weight gain path as well. I used to love long-distance running. I know how you feel. Great idea to lift with your…
  • Slightly above average distance???
  • Since this thread has generated a lot of interest in stroke rate, I decided to share this email I received from Swim Smooth: "You might be interested to know some strokes rates per minute (SPM) from elite swimmers and triathletes whilst racing: - Katie Ledecky 800m 2013 World Championship Gold: 81SPM Swimming speed:…
  • 6.3 miles (10.2 km) in 3.5 hours. That was hard, especially at the end!
  • Wecome! Due to injuries and foot/ankle reconstruction surgery, I can't run anymore either. But since I swam competitively Freshman year in high school, it has been my primary aerobic workout. Similar story to yours! Interval work with bursts of high intensity is probably the best use of your limited time in the pool.…
  • I found the best way to build endurance is to first find your baseline distance and to repeat that distance at least three times (and then more times) every time you swim. When you feel up to it, add a lap to that baseline distance at least once per workout, then when you feel ready do that new baseline twice, then three…
  • I think it is intended as a full-time way of swimming, not just a drill.

  • This is an interesting question. There's a good thread on thermogenic adaptation here that gives a very condensed answer to what is known from some research about this: "So what is going on? - Possibly muscles are more efficient? (lots of data that support that) - Neuroendocrine function changes? (even more data that…
  • Both are important components of weight loss. In my experience, calorie restriction is more important at the beginning, especially if you are not in good condition and cannot exercise that much, but increasing fitness and health require exercise. Adding muscle will also help you maintain a higher metabolism. Finding a…
  • Speed and calorie-burn are only partially related to efficiency. All other things being equal, a relatively inefficient swimmer will expend more calories when swimming at the same speed as a more efficient swimmer. This is one of the reasons why swimming can be such a great exercise even for beginners if they swim at a…
  • Focusing on a higher rate of strokes per minute, I suppose, is probably helpful in open-water swimming in choppy waters. Most of my swimming is in a pool, where a smooth efficient stroke seems more beneficial. My focus here is not on speed, but rather efficiency for the sake of avoiding injury. Speed may be a side benefit,…
  • 3 miles (5,280 yards), 98 minutes.
  • I'm doing that too. 1.5 x marathon swim distance and 1.5 x Ironman biking distance. The other idea I am thinking about is adding a kayaking portion for increasing the amount of upper body strength and stamina needed. Then I would not need to increase the swim and biking distances by as much, but I still would, I think.
  • I'm older than you and have already beaten my body up too much through running! I'm primarily interested in the cardiovascular fitness and avoiding injuries at this point in my life. In order to make the swimming portion equivalent to the running part, you would need not to double the swimming distance, but to approach…
  • Hey, neighbor! Yes, I did their Steelman 3.1 mile swim and the Olympic triathlon, both for the first time last summer. But I had to walk the running part of the tri because of my foot and ankle reconstruction surgery. The titanium rods in my ankle keep it from being able to flex enough to run. You really don't think 15 km…
  • This sounds like the last two parts of the Arch to Arc Enduroman. Running from the Marble Arch in London to Dover (140 km / 87 miles), swim the English Channel from Dover to Calais (33,8 km / 21 miles), then bike from Calais to Paris (290 km / 180 miles). https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enduroman
  • I've done a Steelman open water swim (5k, 3.1 miles) and am currently training for a 10k swim (6.2 miles). Longest training distance so far is 5.4 miles (3 hours) swimming. I will look into the English Channel swim + bike ride to Paris. Thanks! That may be beyond my capabilities, but it is always good to have high goals.
  • The impact of running has already taken its toll on me, unfortunately.
