  • Thanks for sharing the details. Wow, that's an amazingly consistent downward slope. I would have expected a slower loss toward the end, but you continued to adjust your intake downward until you reached your goal and then increased it as you started lifting. Excellent example of discipline and intelligent adaptation. My…
  • Great job! Can you give us more detail on your eating and workout regimens? How much and what types of aerobic exercise? How much lifting? How much did your loss per week slow down toward the end? I'm sure others would find that interesting and helpful.
  • I can lose up to 6-lbs of water weight in a tough workout so, while I am always tempted to use my lowest weight seen as my true weight, I know that is not really a very accurate measure of my 'true' weight. I used to have a scale that kept track of every weighing and it would send me a weekly average, which is probably a…
  • Pickles, shrimp, cherry tomatoes on their own. For a low-cal meal, I've been making a lot with stir-fry vegetables (broccoli, carrots, pea-pods), mushrooms, add sweet cherry tomatoes at the end so they don't get too cooked and lose their flavor. This adds a lot of very low calorie bulk to a meal. Add in chicken and…
  • I'm happy for you as is everyone else here. We all know how hard it is as well as the desire/need for support and encouragement from those closest to you. Keep at it with the next 31 lbs. Do you have some active hobbies? Might be fun to join a biking club or something like that to find some social support for your new…
  • Haven't posted here for a while. Been doing much more biking and intend to keep doing some through the Winter or as much as I can until it gets too cold. But recently I've been going to the pool more and will keep increasing this to make up for less biking. Anyway, did 3 miles nonstop freestyle yesterday. Haven't done that…
  • I'm not much of a believer in rigid training schedules or at least I personally do not like them. I do like to challenge myself but generally do so at my own pace, when it feels right. Here's a description of what I did in training for my first 5k and 6k swims. I've written it up so that anyone can follow it as a way to…
  • I don't even like how cold the water feels in the pool when I first get in. Can't imagine what 14/57 degrees would be like. As a result, I've only done open water swimming in the summer time. I've seen other open-water swimmers actually recommend putting on a few pounds, but that's probably not a good suggestion for this…
  • This is a very friendly group, welcome! Don't worry about looking silly. Let the lifeguard know you're new to this pool, and let her/him recommend a lane. I always ask another swimmer before sharing a lane, even though it is expected, it never hurts to be nice. Make a point to say hello to the lifeguards everythime you go,…
  • Actually, Garmin does track these automatically. On the phone app, go to Activity Stats, Select the Activity, eg, Swimming, then select View Personal Records. On the Web version, go to Trophy Case and then choose the activity.
  • I got a Garmin 735xt for Father's Day a couple of years ago to use for swimming, biking, triathlons, daily steps, etc. Very reliable tracking distances in the pool, but I don't bother with the metrics. It's the easiest way to keep track of weekly distances swimming and biking without needing to think to much, which is not…
  • fishgutzy finally enters the 21st century!!!
  • Thanks for the testing and report, fishgutzy. Just ordered a Roka suit as one of my spares. I like to keep a stash of suit, goggles, and earplugs in my home, car, and work so I'm always ready to go for a swim, where ever I happen to be. This way I do not need to think and plan so much. Hurts my brain.
  • Just want to be able to climb hills a little easier than on heavier bikes.
  • Nice looking bikes. I'll see if anyone near me sells them so I can test ride. Thanks!
  • Thanks, guys. Trails around me vary from very easy to very difficult. Here's an example of a trail that I pass by on my daily commute: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnvywdJL16Q When I'm not commuting on my road bike, I would love to stop and ride for an hour or so on my way home. It looks like a full-suspension is…
  • As of my annual check-up yesterday, HDL is now up to 68. This was a year of relatively low intensity exercise as I was recovering from a bike/car accident, but I tried to stay somewhat active, and in the past 6-weeks stepped up my activity levels to 100-miles/week cycling and and 5 miles/week swimming. My conclusion so…
  • Just saw this. You are very welcome, Laura. I do not recall the exchange but it is very important to be encouraging to people so thanks for the reminder.
  • I mentioned at a master's swim practice once that I had swam 3-miles the day before and the guy just assumed I meant that I had ran 3-miles the day before. As if that were some kind of accomplishment.
  • I used to love running, but serious foot/ankle injury required reconstructive surgery that prevents me from running any more. I really wish I could still run, but I've always loved biking too, so there's still that.
  • This is a great thread. I've been meaning to make my first trip to a Trader Joe's and now I have some great suggestions.
  • I have had my left leg in a cast numerous times for a total of more than 12 months so my left calf muscle is definitely atrophied. You can't add muscle mass while you're eating at a calorie deficit to lose weight so you may have to wait until you're ready to eat at a calorie surplus. There are some exercises that focus on…
  • Smart decision. Don't take chances with injuries. Take it from someone who has learned from his mistakes.
  • ... endorphin addict.
  • Yeah, listen to your doctor. If you don't like swimming, kayaking is also an excellent complement to biking.
  • So last Sunday I did a 67-mile trail bike ride and then swam 2 miles on Monday and 2 miles again on Tuesday. Over the past week I had averaged 140+ minutes per day of working out. Bottom line: over-trained and in serious need of rest, recuperation, and rebuilding. But on Wednesday I was given the opportunity to do a 5k…
  • Did a couple of 2-mile swims the last couple of days, but now I'm going to rest up for a 5k (3.1-mile) open water swim on Sunday. I missed the online registration deadline but emailed the organizer and he gave me a code to register as a volunteer, which means I also get to write on people with a magic marker before the…
  • Whatever pace you swim at, that's the perfect pace.
  • Great job. Isn't it amazing what people can do when they set their mind to it? There is so much untapped energy, intelligence, and drive within us that we haven't even begun to discover. You are proof of this to others. Yay!
