  • Good to hear that you are still learning about your body and fitness and finding some moderation. Maintenance is harder than I thought it would be. It's a lot simpler to lose weight and thus in that sense actually easier. Determination and will-power come easy to me. Moderation is more complicated, it seems.
  • Thanks, gentlygently. I have not yet looked into the Alexander Technique. So far just doing what my sports medicine doc and physical therapist have given me. Just finishing up with PT next week. Eventually, I will graduate to follow up with other ideas for training when I get more adventurous.
  • Well, my goals have changed again. After swimming 5 miles continuous at the end of May, I developed elbow and shoulder issues and my new goal became avoiding chronic injuries. So increased my cross-training on my bike and only did a leisurely 3-mile open-water swim and Olympic-distance triathlon in July and August but very…
  • Most I ever lost during one swim was 6 lbs, but it is almost all water weight and dehydration, and that was probably a 5-mile swim that took 2 hours and 43 minutes. Make sure you drink lots of water after swimming. It is a great exercise!
  • I'm waiting for Garmin to update their tri watches with a wrist HRM and hope that it will also be more stylish. Otherwise, I will buy 2 different watches, something like the Moto 360 as an everyday watch and a more rugged waterproof one for swimming and cross-training.
  • I don't think this is necessarily contradictory. The triceps are only one muscle in the upper arm. 23.8% in one muscle probably doesn't weigh that much, if they are even speaking of (estimated) increased weight of the triceps. It is one thing to tone, increase strength, muscle efficiency, etc, none of which need be related…
  • Good job, everyone! Did another hour yesterday. Totally exhausting, but no issues with shoulder/elbow. I won't pronounce it healed yet but I am encouraged. Not going to overdo it in terms of frequency or distance in the pool, but may slowly do some longer distances much less frequently as long as shoulder/elbow issues do…
  • Wow, Stephen, you have done great! I remember when you first started and am now very proud of how well you've done. I always hate it when people say they're proud of someone else when that someone else has achieved something. They didn't do it; what do they have to be proud of? But it's sort of making sense now. I'm proud…
  • Wow, I've been away a long time. Swam an hour today. Good to be back in the pool. Planning on swimming more often but shorter distances and hope the shoulder/elbow issues do not resurface.
  • Well I'm lucky if I can complete 200 yards of kick boarding in 10 minutes so you're probably doing much better than me. I hate kick boarding!
  • Swam 50 minutes freestyle, then 10 minutes of kick boarding. God, how I hate kick boarding!
  • That should also make your blood pressure low as well. I used to lose 3 or 4 lbs swimming long distances, but I do not drink water while I swim. Most I've ever lost in a work-out, when I was keeping track, was 6 lbs. Can't remember if that was biking or swimming.
  • Welcome! Never seen a mean post in the swimming section. Mermaids are cool.
  • 1. I've used 4 or 5 on-line swim calorie counters and they were all within about 25% of each other. Surprisingly, the MFP calculator was the 2nd lowest. When I was trying to lose weight, I was swimming so much that I could never eat back all my calories on days that I swam. 2. I used to get ear infections pretty regularly…
  • How do they get the water to stay up there on the roof like that?
  • One way of meditating/counting I've used is to make each lap a year of my life and think about where I was, what I was doing, people I met that year. Kinda interesting way of meditating. That only brings me to 56 laps. After that, I plan on what I'll be doing in the future, but even that doesn't work that well for 5 miles…
  • Did a mile in the pool. Felt pretty good. No elbow issues, shoulder a little weak but no pain. Nice to see Ms Cheshirecatastrophe paid a visit and some other new faces. Doing a triathlon (Olympic distance, not Ironman) next month.
  • I'm relatively new to maintenance so don't take me as a model or giver of advice, but my goal is to use a scale to maintain, 'though I do plan on continuing to track my work-outs. If I weigh myself every day, keep track of weekly averages, I'm planning and hoping to continue maintenance without keeping track of daily…
  • This is all so cool, but go easy on the running. I can't run any more because of major foot surgery to correct a chronic injury that never healed. Were all of the injuries due to the running part of the triathlon? Do you know your times for each portion? I'm doing an Olympic distance triathlon on August 9th. Much shorter…
  • Excellent work. How much did your rate of loss slow over time? For example, how many lbs for each of the 16 months? Did your goal weight change over time? Are you at what you now consider to be an ideal weight for you? If so, how did you determine this weight? Are these too many questions? If not, why do triathlons always…
  • I stopped swimming competitively after Freshman year in high school because I started working. My school did not have a pool so we used the pool of a nearby high school so the only time available to us for practice was evenings.
  • Yes, it is very important to listen to one's body, especially in terms of fatigue and potential injuries. I have at long last learned this important lesson. Are you aware of some research results that indicate a diminishing and possibly even negative effect on longevity as one increases frequent running distances at a fast…
  • 3.1-mile open-water swim this morning. Swam slowly so as not to aggravate my elbow/shoulder. But since I haven't been able to train for 45 days, I couldn't have swum much faster anyway. Arm seems to be OK. At least it isn't any more sore than the rest of my body. I learned it's a lot more work swimming in a lake and that I…
  • This is so true. Our stats, timeline, and story are almost identical. When I started on the morning of January 6th, one of the first things I did was remind myself of how great it had felt to be in great condition several times in my previous life. I wrote down some memories of long runs and endorphins and this helped…
  • Great determination. Congratulations on your maintenance. Any injuries from so much running? Don't mean to be a downer, but I can't run any more on account of major foot surgery to deal with running injuries. Don't let that happen to you.
  • I was doing more strength previously, but with the sore elbow/shoulder/arm, I only do some legs and core strength training at present. I do loosely keep track of body fat percentage, but I don't particularly like it as a goal since it implies that fat is bad, but it is not, it has evolved as the body's natural way of…
  • So I created a chart to show my journey to the milestone of no longer being overweight. 78 lbs in 160 days or 23 weeks or 5 months and 1 week: I've been maintaining (more or less) for the past month and plan on losing 2 lbs in July to get to 190. Then I'll try 185 and see what that feels like, etc. As anticipated, it has…
  • Later on last night and today my whole arm has been sore so the brace seems to be protecting the elbow but I suspect the shoulder issues are still causing problems. Maybe no more work-outs this week.
  • 2 miles moderate effort without stopping, wearing my brace. No elbow pain. I resisted the idea of doing 3 miles. Trying to be smart.
  • Half hour of open-water swimming in a very cold Adirondacks lake. Swam out to, around, and back from Peter Pan Island. I figure it was about 200 calories burned swimming and another 1,000 or so resisting hypothermia.
