Is biking an option?
-
Thanks for all the input. Most of my biking will be to work and back (preferred scenic route 14 miles) and the hybrid is definitely slower so it does seem like there will be a bigger calorie burn, but I won't pay much attention to the estimates here or on MMR. Instead, I will watch the scale and get a sense over time of…

Wow, double! Thanks. I've been waiting on the next generation of writs-HRM watches to meet all my various needs. I would like one that has a wrist HRM built in and will also automatically count laps in the pool and in open water. Something like the TomTom Multi-Sport Cardio, but more reliable than the current reviews…

Right now I'm using the MapMyRide, which is pretty close to the useless MFP time-based guesses. MMR also tracks elevation changes, but I don't know if it takes that into account when calculating calories. Do the MFP calculations factor in your weight or is it the same for everyone?

29 days left for everyone to meet their goal or do they best they can before the year is half over. Keep at it. I'm going to set 190 as my goal for the end of June.

Hope things go better for you with the shoulder, Bruce. Have you switched to another exercise in the meantime? Biking, running, walking? I biked 15 miles Saturday and was amazed at how much of a work-out it was. I'm in great cardio conditioning but my legs have not kept up with my arms, lats & lungs.

Thanks. I don't know much about his methods, but from a quick look it seems that my practical philosophy of swimming might be similar to his. Except when I'm sprinting, which I don't really enjoy anyway.

Another thing to think about with respect to sneezing (and other cold symptoms) after swimming, especially after very intense work-outs, ie, the kind that give you an endorphin high is vasomotor rhinitis, in this context also called exercise-induced rhinitis. There's a couple of different theories about what causes it. The…

Thanks, Mac. No swimming today. Doing stretching exercises now. Helping my elbow heal. Yay!
-
Just got back from the sports medicine guy. No swimming or weightlifting for at least 10 days, doing special wrist stretching exercises, and wearing an elbow strap. That 5-mile swim on Monday resulted in tennis & golfer's elbow (lateral and some medial epicondylitis). Biking OK. If pain gone after 10 days, I may have to…

Thanks, AQ. Earlier today I happened upon the same thread (that you reference in your post) at TI Swimming. I had initially planned on swimming again at lunch time and after work to do 10k today and I really wanted to go back at lunch time to see if I could experiment with different catch and pull techniques to reduce the…

Swam two miles before work. Right elbow started hurting during my first 5-mile swim Monday and it was still hurting while swimming today. Lateral epicondylitis, I think. Can't see a sports medicine specialist till June 23rd, but I can see the nurse practitioner in a different orthopedic surgery/sports medicine office…

I know that dieticians can be certified as such, while 'nutritionist' is not certified thing, but it seems like in academic discussions, you do find the label 'nutritionist' used very frequently. For example, you can get a masters or doctorate in nutritional science.

That's quite a work-out! That's about what I do swimming continuously. Doing it in drills and intervals, after 6 weeks away from the pool, is great work. Do you cross-train with other sports?
-
Great to have you back in the pool, Macstraw. IMs are evil. Just sayin'
-
Swam 5 miles continuous in 167 minutes. Next goal is 10k noncontinuous, then continuous.
-
Slower because half as many flip-turns/push-offs?
-
Why not eat out healthy food? Is that hard to find in Shanghai?
-
Swam 1 mile a couple of days ago. Was late to work so I swam really fast and skipped the whirlpool afterwards and my neck and shoulder muscles are still sore and tight. This gives me another reason for why I like swimming long distances. Have a great weekend, everyone!

Yes, freezing, and yes, beautiful. I absolutely love the Alps in the summer time. Great hiking weather, but still plenty of snow on the mountain tops. The cheese and chocolate are to die for.
-
Wow, what do you do that takes you all over the world? I once swam and (regrettably) dove off the highest platform at the Olympic swimming pool in Munich. On my honeymoon in the Alps (in August), I swam in ever mountain lake we hiked past for 2 weeks.
-
Missed this before. We're wishing you all the best, Macstraw!

I am in Pennington, New Jersey. Just last night I went out for pizza & beer whom I met through the US Masters website so this thread is definitely a good idea! I swim at the Princeton Fitness & Wellness Center, which is next to my work. Luckily, no hippos or crocodiles, but I have seen a fair number of strange creatures…

Thanks! First time I've been in Onederland in 17-18 years.

2 miles, pizza and beer with two other local swimmers.

Not just your kick, but everyone's freestyle kick is inefficient. It is not unusual for people to be pretty much the same speed with a pull buoy. Freestyle kicking only helps a little bit when you're sprinting and you can go all out for a short period of time. For longer distances, your energy is better conserved for your…

I swam 4 four miles to Onederland on Saturday.

Being a geek, I also got an expensive Withings scale but it said I weighed one pound more than my other, cheaper scale so I returned it. Don't need any negativity around me. My other scale already said I weighed one pound more than the scale at my gym and my wife's scale, which is why I bought the Withings scale in the…

Great job. It was my experience with a pull buoy that taught me to use a minimal kick when swimming long distances (freestyle). When racing shorter distances I kick much more, but for long distances it doesn't seem to matter much for time and it is a lot easier.

Quick update. I am now officially in Onederland.
