  • Looks like people have stopped sharing. Tell your friends about this topic and see if we can get some more "real life" moments shared.
  • Actually the derailleur was fine. The steel threads on the left side of the bottom bracket had worn their aluminum counterparts and left play in the match (as well as some grit). Larry put teflon tape on both the worn left side and it's counterpart on the right and put it back together as the bearing and shaft were fine.…
  • Good job Skywalker! I made it to the club ride tonight after contacting a nationally known cyclist to look at my bicycle. We started out riding together and before we got out of the park and on to the road. He had diagnosed that he knew what the problem was and could fix it in 20 minutes. I couldn't keep up with him after…
  • @Ladywing...are you by any chance a Redwings fan?
  • @Jax....never considered toe cages as hazardous before. You've really enlightened me!
  • @buggaboo...."That there's funny - I don't care who ya are!"
  • @Panda....If you haven't purchased a stationary bike yet you might look at a trainer that could be cheaper. (I hope I have the name right). It is basically a stand for your rear wheel that lets it roll while offering resistance against it (there are various types and I'm an expert on none of them). You can even get a riser…
  • Well done Stu - I need to get back to running again. I'm looking at doing a 5K to benefit prostate cancer research. The noise is a clicking noise. The last mechanic thought that as I pushed with my left foot the chain was slapping the deraileur.
  • The noise is a part of the drive train and happens in every gear now as long as I am pedaling. The chain has been lubed and the pedals removed and greased. Using the micro-adjuster on the front deraileur did quiet it a little so I thing the issue is there but have to take it easy as the bike shifts great and don't want to…
  • @Dinos. Good story but I don't get the connection to exercise.:-)
  • Ride went great. Rode with a fast strong group and only fell back once when I tried to climb the second steep hill in the set in the wrong gear. 31.45 miles at an average speed of 16.9 mph. My cycling computer does show one anomoly though. The fastest speed recorded is showing as 58.6 mph. Every other computer on the ride…
  • @Skywalker. Yes, Strangely we did cycle that stretch of road on vacation a couple of years ago. Thanks for the story!
  • I didn't want to hijack this thread so started another one for some further sharing. Check out "Most Embarrassing (Humorous) Exercise Moment " for the story of my falling while standing still and add your own. I'll check in again after my ride tonight.
  • Got my bike back finally. Problem wasn't in the crank but in the front deraileur. Had another small problem with shifter during tryout but we'll see how she behaves on the ride tomorrow.
  • Welcome and congratulations on overcoming the accident and finding cycling. Hope to hear more about your rides.
  • I've never heard of the change in diet to shock the body before but who knows. I do remember that an increase in exercise will require more calorie intake or the body goes into survival mode. I always try to eat 10% of my exercise calories. I agree that changing your workout should help break your plateau. You may be…
  • Not meaning to steal the thread. I don't have anymore bright ideas for you. I checked out exercisetv.tv on the internet yesterday and that's another option you might try. I wanted to comment on the knee issue. Whether it is a road bike, a trail bike, or a stationary bike...knee pain is NOT something you work through.…
  • Check out your local library for exercise DVDs. They may not have the latest and greatest but there should be a variety that will keep you moving. I recommend not starting with anything hardcore as that can be very un-motivating. The big thing is to keep a positive attitude. You WILL have setbacks along the way and your…
  • Congratulations! There is nothing wrong with WALKING a 5K unless you stage up front at the start and everyone has to go around you (I used to get really annoyed at those folks  ). I'm glad that you got the "high" from it. That's a great feeling and will keep you coming back. If you start losing your commitment to…

  • I try to ride bike 4 times a week (minimum of 30 miles each to maximum of 100 miles for one of the rides) during the riding season. Due to work and group rides it usually becomes 2 sets of back to back days. During the off-season it's into the gym for spinning classes 3 times a week with yoga on fridays. I'm 55 so recovery…
  • @Stu. Well done! I could picture your ride from the description. I also enjoy hearing about living in metropolitan Japan.
  • Welcome. I'll be looking forward to reading your postings. Regarding your comment about the child on the back of the bike. I know money is often an issue with children but, if the child is strapped into a seat behind you, you might consider a trailer as they are much safer in a fall. Additionally you can use the trailer to…
  • That's not bad time on a rented hybrid. You should be very proud of yourself. Welcome.
  • 2008 - I think? Decided to do yard work today instead and, maybe, run the multi-use path at the local MetroPark if I stay motivated.
  • I have a Giant Defy 3.
  • Caution Rant To Follow! I just found out that the bicycle I had my wife bring in Wednesday afternoon hasn't even been looked at yet and is still ten back. Not only did I miss the wednesday night ride but now I won't be riding this weekend either! Andrea has rehearsals and a wedding to play tomorrow and this would have been…
  • Try resistance bands. A DVD player, a little elbow room, and a door are all you need to get an inexpensive full-body workout with a set of bands. I recommend getting a set with at least three bands of different sizes, detachable handles, and a DVD for form and pace. You can also add wrist and ankle weights to your dog walk…
  • I guess that leaves me to be one of the "men in tights". I much prefer Monthy Python but a comedy's a comedy. I spent most of my life underweight so having a few extra pounds was quite a shock when I entered my 50s. My wife has a quite different background and many people believe that I'm here and doing what I do to…
  • @Skywalker. Good luck on your half-IronMan. The swimming would kill me as I never learned to use my legs and just pull myself through the water with my arms.
  • Looks like I'm without a bicycle until, at least, Friday so Tuesday's sprint and whatever I can get in on Saturday (assuming I have a bike) will be it for the week.. I may have to actually resort to hitting the gym! :ohwell:
