If you are disciplined enough to average your calories out over a few days, a trainer suggested to me, instead of trying to get your calories right on every day, it's OK to be a bit short on calories (especially on days when you may have a lot of exercise calories to use up), and carry those calories over to days when your…

I second the benefit of going to a real running store, but a website lik roadrunnersports.com is a good altrnative. You can determine your arch type by wetting the bottom of your foot and stepping on a dry piece of paper and looking at the wet imprint

Add a speed day to your schedule. Run intervals at speed with recovery runs in between. Vary the length of the intervals week to week, maybe 400 m this week, 800 next, miles the next. Aim for a recovery run about half the time it takes you to run the interval. (So, if you run 400 m in two minutes, jog for one minute, then…

5.8 miles this morning. Fifth day in a row running and my legs are getting tired! I am usually a three-days a week kind of guy, and although my mileage hasn't increased much, I miss those recovery days.

Might be more fun to actually run with him, but when your kids become teenagers, you'll realize they don't mind hanging out with you one-on-one, but don't want you hanging out with their friends. Gosh, you might embarass them:laugh:

Ran by myself during my son's cross country workout again today. Got in 10 K in just under an hour, so not a bad work-out. Running in a new park, so I had some exploring to do. Always good to get a change of scenery. (And knowing that the team may come up and lap me at any time is good motivation not to dog it too…

Check out some of Jeff Galloway's programs (sorry, don't have a link), where you start with mostly walking with little intervals of running in between, and you increase the amount of running as you get more fit. That way, you'll have lots of recovery intervals to get your breath back. Of course, if you are really worried,…

Good job on the 5K :drinker: :flowerforyou: Never a bad idea to work on speed with intervals, but if you are that sensitive on the side stitch thing, I'd probably just work on the distance until you can run the whole 5K without a break, then start working on the pace. If you are serious about picking up the pace sooner…

Oh, you can be sure the texting will get more effort next summer than the training around my house  So cross country team work-outs started today, and they had to run something like 4.5 miles. Considering that is probably twice the distance of any run he has done in months, I was laughing a little on the inside. I…

You know, you expect that from teenagers, so the first summer I wasn't surprised. I thought he learned his lesson, so I was a little disappointed (but not really surprised) when he pulled the same trick last summer. When I listened to all the whining last September, I figured OK, now he really gets it. Now that the cycle…

Had my son up and on the road at 7 AM. Only a couple of miles this morning, but picked it up to faster than race pace after the warm up. Figured if we weren't going long, we were going fast:laugh: Tomorrow is team practice, so I'll let coach work him while I just have a quiet run on my own. (Can't work out with the team -…

Christine - what a terrifying experience, glad you weren't too badly injured. And, actually, I am not surprised at all that the owner didn't intervene right away - that's why the dogs are so bad to begin with. (hence the slogan, 'no bad dogs, just bad owners'). As a veterinarian, I deal with that stuff every day. Even when…

Speed is a relative thing. Just a few years ago, when I ran my first 5K, I was thrilled to beat 30 minutes. 12-18 months ago, I was really happy with 9 minute race pace, but you keep doing your track / interval work-outs, and you slowly reset your pace, and whittle down those times. My last 10K race was someting like…

Actually, that's not too surprising. The typcial running shoe will give you more arch support than your average shoe / cross trainer, flip-flop. When I have signs of PF, I wear arch supports in my slippers around the house. Way better than going bare-foot or slippers alone. Six mile tempo run this morning. MIle warm up, 4…

Speed intervals this morning, warm up / 4 x (4 minutes hard/ 3 minutes recovery) / cool down for 6.75 miles total. Supposed to do the speed intervals at race pace or faster but was about 10 seconds off the pace - too hot to maintain that pace

I'm sure the correct answer is to rest it, but I'm like Ketchie, since it doesn't hurt when I run, I'd get my miles in and suffer the consequences. When my feet are bothering me, I make sure to take my ibuprofen and stretch well after my run and again during the day. When I get signs of PF, it is usually a sign I'm due for…

Six mile tempo run this morning, and it was a brisk 78*, so felt better than the last few weeks of running.

Great work out ,Kechie. Nothing to be ashamed off. There is some sort of equation that you should slow down X seconds for every degree over 75 or something like that, so in this heat and humidity, I wouldn't be disappointed with the times (except the 5:23 - did you stop for coffee:laugh:  ). Good morning Jess -…

13 miles the weekend before the race seems like a lot to me if you don't regularly run that distance. I usually limit my long run the weekend before the race to 9-10 miles. (But then I usually have done 15 miles two or three times the weekends prior to my 'taper'). You already know you can do the distance. I'd concentrate…

SPin class this morning - strength ride. Felt really good, but I think I may be sore tomorrow - first time on the bike in months.
-
Kechie, I feel your pain! I pulled the same stunt yesterday. Was planning to run again today, but it is even hotter today and it just took too long to recover yesterday and I had too much to do today (yard work, laundry mountain, etc).
-
Started out for an 8 mile run this morning, but I think I pushed the pace too much at the start. Felt great until about mile 7, and all of a sudden I realized I was cooked, so I just walked it home. Now I'm just trying to rehydrate. That's what I get for sleeping in until 7 AM  Becky - congrats on the double digits…

Not that it gets super cold here (FL), but I do get my runs in with 30* weather come January/ February. For me, the big things for comfort are a hat to keep my ears warm and gloves. Get Under Armor - type that wick the sweat so your head and hands stay dry. I agree with Raymond and bgood - invest in some decent tech-fabric…

Just bumping. Missed my run yesterday - some days, life just gets in the way. Maybe tonight.

Six mile run this morning with 5 X 3 minute fartleks in the middle.Good to push yourself now and then.

I talked with a (overweight, not-real-fit) friend last week, who had just done a 1/2 marathon with NO preparation. Of course, he knew what he was in for and walked most of it so he didn't over do it. (And was still sore as heck the next day:laugh: ). SO I guess my answer is that it depends on what is going to motivate you.…

Rest day for me today. May work out tonight if I have some time. Run tomorrow. I am also a big fan of Body Glide to prevent chafing. Inner thighs and nipples fairly routinely, other places depending on running conditions, distance, what I'm wearing. As far as exercise calories, I tend to spread them out over the week. To…

I hear you!! back in Florida for 7.25 hot, sticky miles this morning. I miss those cool hill runs in Canada already. Happy Running everybody!
-
Ran five yesterday and 2.25 today - lots of hill work ,so it was a good workout.

On vacation in Canada for two weeks, visiting my childhood home. We lived next to a 200 acre park- miles of woodland trails overlooking the ocean. Had a great run there yesterday with my son - made me feel like a kid again (if you ignore the sore heel and stiff back:laugh: ) It's raining today, so I am having trouble…
