Try drinking good quality coffee black (and note Starbucks is not good coffee - not even close). Find somewhere near you that roasts their own beans and try different varietals black. You'll probably find something you'll like. There are a lot of subtle flavors in coffee depending on the variety and region of origin that…

I suspect this is the key to her rantings: 12. what is your blood type? There is a book pushed by a huge new-agey "church" organization -- peopled almost exclusively by the kind of person who cooks hormone free chicken for their cat, that claims your blood type is the key to everything (If I remember it is called "eat…

See a DR ASAP. As a ski patroler back in the day if I heard those complaints I would have suspected altitude related capillary bursting in the lungs which is not a joking matter. (Do you live above 5000ft?) You need to get on top of this right away, may be an indicator of something serious.

My wife does experience days of intense joint pain (one of her primary symptoms is pain) and it seems to be related not so much to the weather conditions, but to the rapid change in weather conditions. A day when it starts clears and warm and a storm blows in and then blows back out are by far the toughest on her joints.…

The biblical saying is actually "Money is the root of all kinds of evil."

I don't worry about it. I try to control my portions, i don't "try" everything, and I don't make my diet into a burden for other people. I take what I ate into account the rest of the day and act accordingly.

Cufflinks. I used to sell art and wore suits everyday, and just folded them into my "professional look." I probably have 30 pairs, although most of them were gifts.

If I don't have time to cook eggs, I grab a bar of some kind. Usually a LARA bar, since it is actual food, although I am at times guilty of eating an engineered nutrition type protein supplement bar.

Shoes--not too cushiony, you want to be lifting weight, not compressing EVA foam. Avoid running/basketball/casual&skate shoes. Look for real cross trainers or bare foot type runners (with the five toes, although I don't personally like them). Clothes--whatever you are comfortable in. some people like baggy (sweat pants and…

Some people may feel bad eating meat and it is their prerogative not to but humans are clearly designed as omnivores. We have canine teeth (the pointy ones in front) designed to tear which are only useful to meat eaters, and our stereoscopic vision is designed to help us judge the distance to our prey (most herbivores have…

Love them. I like the plain and the barbeque -- taste like east coast regional brand barbeque chips. If you have a trader joes near by try their popped chips, just as good, same calories and a buck a bag cheaper.

If you check out my profile, the picture of me in my waders is at about 300 lbs and the picture walking with a friend (I am in the red) was 5 years ago I was 225 at 8% body fat. I am not back there yet (still about 20lbs away) but I wore that shirt about a week ago and it fit fine. (I am 6'1")

In a word....eggs. I eat two whole eggs + 4 whites and 2 tbsp salsa scrambled together. It is a large and satisfying breakfast for 220 cals.

This is not exactly true. How fast you can gain is largely dependent on genetics and varies wildly from one person to another. People who have been around strength and conditioning coaching are familiar with the terms fast-gainer and slow-gainer. As a fast gainer (under coaching and supervision) I put on 45 lbs in a school…

This is absolutely wrong. Any weight bearing exercise puts additional pressure on your joints (That is why heavy lifters wrap their knees when doing squats), and if you have a cartilage problem there is the issue of repetitive motion wear. If you have cartilage issues, try running in the pool, it is way harder than you…

I love books and have a sizable library and I read a lot (20,000+ pages a year), but do use a kindle for certain things and love it. For pleasure reading or things I need to read to be aware of them but don't need/want to add to my library it is great. The e-ink is a little easier on the eyes than ink and paper, and you…

Seafood, apart from grilled salmon, will almost never be lower in calories than a grilled steak in a restaurant.

Lean cuts of steak are always good (Think sirloin or strip not ribeye or fillet). A baked potato where you control the topping is OK. Watch the croutons in the salad, and avoid bread, tapas/apps and mashed potatoes. And relax have a good time and don't make a friend's birthday about your diet.

Long ago when I worked as a bouncer, I accidentally threw Beck out of his own concert at the Fox Theatre when a crazy scrum broke out and I just shoved a pile of 6 Guys out the back door just as he was coming out of the green room and got caught in the crowd. He was really cool about it though, and thought it was funny.

No hugging for me especially with the opposite sex unless it is my wife, my mother or my sisters or niece. The developmentally disabled are excluded from my no hugging policy though.

When I found myself in the Big and Tall section of a clothing store, and being called "Big John" ceased to feel like a compliment after 3 years of full time graduate school coupled with a (nearly) full time desk job.

I have consulted with Drs and a sports nutritionist too and this is exactly right. The eat back your calories philosophy came from personal trainers, not doctors or dieticians, who as a general rule scoff at the suggestion. While you may need to eat some additional calories to make sure you have the energy you need, the…

The bottom line is calories in and calories out. There have been several studies that have been published in the last 2 years which thoroughly debunked the if you don' eat breakfast/3 meals/5 meals every day your metabolism will slow down myth. Personally, depending on my schedule I eat 1-2 meals a day, but a lot of small…

Try fruit. There are few things in the candy aisle as sweet as a honey crisp apple or a ripe strawberry. If you avoid confections, in a relatively short time your taste preferences will change and you will start to prefer naturally sweet foods and the confections will not be as satisfying when you do eat them.

I had hip reconstruction about 5 years ago, and I received two lifetime restrictions if I want to avoid a full replacement. No yoga which makes sense to me, but what shocked me was a lifetime ban on treadmill use. Apparently the motion of running on a treadmill is just unnatural enough that it increases wear on the…

It seems like you are doing good work, and you have made impressive progress keep up the good work. Some tips (I am not personal trainer or anything, but I was subjected to 16 years of strength and conditioning coaching), don't neglect upping the reps of your workout, not just the weights, if your main goal is to tone and…

A lot of it is genetics, 2 people can eat the same and do the same workouts and one can be lithe and the other bulkier. In college my training partner had the male version of the runners body (5'11" 180) and I was bulkier (6'1"240) and we ate the same (managed athletic department training table) and did the same workouts…

Other than taking Thursday off, no difference. There is no reason to use a holiday to scrap your workout routine.

I never eat back my exercise calories. What I do do is make sure that I am getting enough protein in my diet. Your body can draw calories from fat stores, but not the macros like protein you need if you are doing weight training. And b e very careful about "trusting" MFP calorie burned numbers. Most members who have wear a…

Last week during gym time for special needs adults, one of my guys asked how high I could jump, and I shocked myself by being able to touch the rim. (Landing on my reconstructed hip was no fun, but I limped away smiling.) I haven't been able to do that in 5 years, and figured I never would again.
