  • I have a similar, but different problem. My husband is really into weight-lifting, and all of his magazines scream, "Protein! Protein! Protein!" He thinks that the only important things to eat are protein and carbs, and that if you are working out and eating these two things that calories don't matter. I've tried to…
  • Usually when I don't want to work out, I think to myself, "I've never regretted going to the gym. If I can just get myself there, I'll at least do more than if I stay home." So, can you at least get yourself to the gym? That's half the battle, and no matter what you do, you won't regret it!
  • I know this seems silly, but if you own the movie Napoleon Dynamite, you have a workout video already! On bad days, I used to come home and skip to the end of the movie when he's doing his dance routine. Try to learn the dance routine! It will take a good 30 minutes and you'll be laughing your butt off by the end of it!
  • You are taking a big step right now! I do not have as much weight to lose as you do, but I can still go off of my personal experience with weight loss. The first week will be relatively easy and you WILL see results if you follow your calorie restrictions and are honest. After that, the novelty wears off and it can be a…
  • I'm 26 as well--feel free to friend me! I'm not Asian, but I can tell you how I cut most rice out of my diet. Look for a grain called quinoa (keen-wah) at the supermarket. You can pretty much replace rice with quinoa in any dish. We eat it all the time with stir-fries and the like. Good luck! You'll be surprised how fast…
  • I'm excited, too! This will be our first Christmas with our daughter as a toddler, so I think it will be really special for her and us!
  • I am a cardio first gal. For me, it takes a lot more energy to maintain a rigorous effort than to do just do short bursts, such as with weights. I tend to agree with one of the previous posts, though. This is my schedule: Mon: run 1 mile (fast as I can); then do weights Tues: jog 3 miles (medium pace) Weds: off Thurs: jog…
  • Welcome! You can feel really good about this decision. :o) Good luck!
  • I'm 26 yrs old as well! I'm down 12 lbs. so far, but I have 28 to go! I'll add you!
  • What city do you live in? You should go online and see if they have a Hollaback! campaign going there. I live in Des Moines and we just started one. It's a campaign to end street harassment. It might not solve all of the problems, but it's nice to meet and talk with other people about your experiences and come up with ways…
  • Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen, A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. Those are the two I read most recently, and I loved them both.
  • Hungry-girl.com has a great cole slaw recipe that is only 60-some calories per serving! I make it all the time now! Tastes VERY close to the real thing! She also has a really good pasta salad recipe, but it takes some time to prepare because you have to boil eggs and pasta and let them cool.
  • I would add .25 mile every two weeks. Don't increase speed and distance at the same time. Distance first, then speed. It seems like it'll take forever, but as you lose the weight you'll be able to do more, faster. Good luck!
  • I know how you feel. There's something wonderful about waking up and knowing you ate well and exercised the day before. Since I've been where you're at, I try to remind myself of the good feeling when I feel like eating and eating and eating. And if it makes you feel any better, I quit smoking Feb. 2010, and I broke down…
  • I have a 9 month old baby, and as of last week I am officially at my pre-pregnancy weight (which is still 17 lbs. over the highest healthy weight for my height). It takes some time to lose that weight! My advice is to take your time. Don't be in a rush to look like you did before; enjoy a beer now and then, eat some sushi,…
  • You'll have to get over your disdain for cooking, unless you have LOTS of money! It's really not as hard as it seems, though! I would suggest starting with some simple things: 1) Start tracking what you eat. For the first couple of days, don't worry about calories, just write down EVERYTHING you eat. That alone will open…
  • I'm with you, only it hasn't been a month for me. It's only been this week. I've been running a lot, too, and nothing! Really, body?! Nothing?! Not sure what's going on, but the only thing that KINDA makes me feel better (and that is a big "kinda") is knowing that I'm living a much healthier lifestyle than probably 80% of…
  • I can't dance, but I did a hip hop dance class workout once that ended up being a ton of fun! I went with a friend, so we just laughed at each other and had fun with it. Other than that, I've done boot camp classes and strength/cardio classes that have been great! I find that with group fitness, I push myself further…
  • Mashed cauliflower instead of mashed potatoes Greek yogurt instead of sour cream Sunflower seeds instead of chips I think those are my main ones. I try not to use too much sweetener, but Splenda does a great job when I do use it.
  • When I was a teenager I was an outdoor only runner--hated treadmills! I don't know what changed for me, but this time around I actually prefer the treadmill. I think just because it seemed easier to track my progress--the numbers were right there in front of me! I would say that once I hit my first goal of 3 miles and had…
  • She has great recipes! You can find a lot of them for free on her website, hungry-girl.com.
  • It really depends on the person. What I have done with Insanity is just add "calisthenics, vigorous effort" under cardio. That should give you a guess. If you're REALLY working hard, you can pretty much assume you're burning 100 calories per 10 min. You're likely burning more than that, but I like to err on the side of…
  • Definitely rest it for at least a week. In my experience, pushing through the pain only makes it waaaay worse down the road. Give it a week or two and try to do low impact cross training in the meantime. Good luck and be patient!
  • That is wonderful! Just be careful and don't increase speed to quickly. That's what I did and I got REALLY bad shin splints that "benched" me for over a month. Good luck and good job!

  • Yes! I have 25 lbs to lost just to get to the very max of my healthy BMI, and my goal weight is to lose 15 after that. I've lost 6.2 lbs so far, which means I have 33.8 left to go, and some days that number seems so unattainable (especially when I think of how young I was the last time I weighed that much!). There are…
  • Yes. Definitely go to a running store. Especially since you are a beginning runner. Most running shoes are under $100 (which is still expensive for me!), but it will cost a lot more in doctor's bills and/or patience if you hurt yourself because you had the wrong shoe.
  • I hadn't thought of a thyroid problem. I'll start with vitamins and see how that goes. If it doesn't help I'll call the doc :) Thanks for the advice everyone!
  • I will look into the B12! Do you all know of any fruits or veggies that are naturally high in it?
  • My mom told me once that she'd heard this quote and it helped her lose weight: "Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels." I was having trouble tonight, too, because my husband had friends over drinking and having fun, and I had had a bad day and wanted to join in. But I thought about how I'll feel tomorrow morning when…
