  • I know, but their registration page is pretty intimidating: Part of this is just me being stubborn. I could use another marathon time but I think it would be cool to use my Grandfather Mountain Marathon time as my Pike's Peak qualifier (GMM is a notoriously tough marathon, albeit not nearly as tough as Pike's Peak).
  • The best way to feel comfortable in the gym is to get a personal trainer for the first 4 or 5 sessions. This will get you into a routine, you will know what you are doing, and will be so focused on your own workout that you won't worry what other folks are thinking. I started working out in a gym right after completing the…
  • .01 miles is 16 meters, so yes, it's not far at all. So my point is it doesn't matter, and there's no reason to run the extra distance just to have your GPS give a round number. I'll only make the effort to run a bit farther if I'm off my plan by a half mile or more -- now you are talking real distance, that matters in…
  • Good point -- may be more of a safety / comfort issue than anything. Oddly I don't get much of that around here when I run shirtless, lol!
  • What about middle aged, not flabby males? Edit: I should add, I'm an advocate of equal-opportunity in skin exposure. I think middle-aged, flabby males *and* females, if they choose, should run shirtless / in jog bras when the weather heats up. I'd rather look at the fit females with washboard abs, but it's fine with me if…
  • Personally I don't mind at all if a woman is running in sports bra and shorts. I try to be discreet about looking but I *am* a guy, so...
  • I agree with the training suggestions. I do know quite a few people who have BQed with much less than 60 MPW, but they were doing lots of cross training. It took me about two and a half years to get from 25 MPW to BQ. I ran three marathons in the final year, qualifying on my third attempt. I pretty much stayed in the 50-70…
  • Some handhelds have dials to open / close the valve, so you might check that http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_ExLvZfhcM
  • Hi everyone, Thanks for all the congrats on the 30-mile run. Unfortunately immediately after the run my shin started hurting so badly that I could barely walk. Long story short, I figured out it was just bruised, took most of the week off, and had my first run (4 on a treadmill) yesterday. Today I ran 3.1 outside and it…
  • Did my longest-ever run today (with a small asterisk): 30.34 miles. I'm definitely feeling worn out but I've also definitely felt much worse after much shorter runs. The asterisk part is that I actually did complete a longer "run" of 38.6 miles when I paced a friend at a 100-mile ultramarathon. However, this was at the end…
  • 250 for February. There is some odd data in the sheet right now. I may delete some folks if they don't update soon.
  • Just registered for a very fun race: The Scream half marathon in North Carolina. Since it descends over 2,000 vertical feet, it is super fast, and known as a PR course. I would never count this race as a PR, but this year I'm thinking about trying something a little tougher: Starting early at the finish line, running up to…
  • I have found that vests chafe a lot less than belts -- your mileage may vary, of course! Sounds like this race will have a lot of aid stations in any case, so maybe no worries there. For shorts have you considered compression shorts? I wear compression underwear under regular shorts and find that works fairly well, but I…
  • Some folks suggest 10% a week as a max, which would actually end up being closer to 20% for the month. But a better approach is to increase by 10 to 15% until that is comfortable, then increase again. So my suggestion is to increase your weekly mileage 10% now, and plan on another increase sometime later in the month.…
  • Take two weeks to recover, doing easy runs -- no speed work. Then you can absolutely go straight into training mode. Look for an "intermediate" plan rather than a beginning one. Hal Higdon has good ones. My favorite is the Daniels Running Formula (you need to buy the book).
  • Got 6.63 this morning to just squeak in ahead of my goal at 250.11 for the month. I've updated the spreadsheet but I will probably do one more update to make sure everyone has had a chance to record their miles. So far 9 runners have reached their goal and 6 are within 10% -- great job everyone! Don't forget to sign up for…
  • 6.52 left to get to 250! Should be able to get this tomorrow!
  • I have that vest -- I think you just need to get used to it. I much prefer carrying 2L on my back to in my hands. But a lot of ultrarunners swear by handhelds. You could maybe get some raceready shorts or a spibelt to carry the other necessaries.
  • To echo what others have said -- you really shouldn't need fuel for a run that is less than about 90 minutes, especially if you eat a little something beforehand. I will sometimes have a piece of toast before a morning run. If you do feel the need to eat something, a tiny bit of carbs can go a very long way. What you are…
  • Maybe put a hydration pack in the 40.94 drop bag, just in case?
  • Outdoors. Ice is just about the only thing that will send me to the treadmill. Cold, hot, rainy, snowy ==> bring it on!
  • I was at a marathon once where this woman spectator had a sign that said "DON'T GIVE UP THE SHIP!" I realize it's some kind of Navy motto but it's got to be the least inspirational sign for a runner ever. The worst part was that she showed up with the same sign at several different points along the course.
  • Welcome to the group! Looking forward to seeing you break that record!
  • I'm doing my first-ever ultramarathon -- a 50-miler -- at the end of the month, so this will be a big month for me! However, I'm also tapering for the race so my goal is going to be the same as February: 250 miles.
  • Time to get started setting your March goals! Here's the spreadsheet: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/1212683-march-mfp-mileage-challenge Don't forget that there are 5 weekends this month, so be ambitious setting your goals! Also, I got lazy and made an 8-day week for the final week. Hope this isn't too confusing…
  • "You ran XX miles? You are crazy!" I don't have the heart to tell them that was my easy run...
  • Just to clarify this: If your race seeds people into corrals based on a qualifying time, it is fine to go to the front of your corral. But please do not go all the way to the front of the entire pack and line up on the starting line. It will be no fun for you and the thousands of people who will be trying to pass you…
  • Awesome! Congrats on the record. I ran 6.9 this morning; I've got 12.45 left to go and two 6-milers in the plan; I think I'm going to get there!
  • Two days left, and 19 miles to reach 250. My workout schedule only has 18 miles on it. I guess I should probably figure out some way to get one measly little extra mile in :)
