Lifetime running challenge!
I've set up a new lifetime running challenge Google Doc -- use this to set your own goals, then track and see how you compare to others on MFP. You can set any goal you want -- 1,000 - 2,000 - 5,000 - 10,000 - 20,000 or more! Ideally this should be a long term goal; something that should take you at least a year to…

Post your recent results - Part 2
This is part two of the "Post Your Recent Results!" discussion. As before, it's the place to brag / commiserate about your recent race results. Make sure to let everyone know not just the distance, but what race you ran. You'd be surprised to find out how many MFPers have run the same race! Here's the link to Part 1:…

"Counting" missed chip time for a PR?
I just set three PRs in a 12k this weekend. There were official splits at 8k, 10k, and 12k, and all three were PRs. However, the timers missed my chip start, costing me about 8 seconds. They are PRs either way, but what should I "count" as the PR? The official, incorrect time? Or a better estimate based on my watch?

More accurate marathon time calculator
This is pretty cool: Slate's Marathon Time Predictor It definitely seems to be more accurate for me -- based on my 5k time, Runner's World says I should be able to run a 3:00 marathon. This calculator gives 3:15, and my actual PR in a marathon is 3:22. From the article:

Article on 5k strategy -- anyone ever tried these?
Since I started too fast in Sunday's 5k, I've been searching around for some tips on how to keep it under control, and found this article: http://www.livestrong.com/article/103048-tips-run-faster-5k/ Good stuff; I especially like that it offers separate advice for beginners and experts. One tip that was intriguing to me is…

Target 5k in 2 weeks; run a 5k the week before?
I'm not really in top form for a 5k; I've only just started refocusing on the distance after running the Pikes Peak Marathon in August. But the national Master's Championship only happens once a year and I will be out of the country in 2015, so October 5 is my shot. I don't think I have a chance at an AG placing or a PR,…

Post your recent results!
I didn't see a thread here about race results, just upcoming races. So I thought I'd start one. Here's your chance to brag (or complain) about your recent race performances.

10 reasons 5Ks are Freakin Awesome!
Fun article on Runner's World. I think the best part isn't so much the 10 reasons but the fact that this marathoner doesn't realize he's talking to a world-class 5Ker: "You know a lot about this stuff! You run marathons, too?" "Well, not really. Once. I race 5-Ks mostly." Wah-wah. Mr. Onplane is visibly less impressed.…

Anyone else noticed this with the Garmin Records?
Just saw this in the "records" section on Garmin Connect: Not sure what's going on -- 1 mile is not 1,083 feet, and a marathon is much more than 39,000 feet. Also not sure why anyone would want to know how far these distances are in feet! Is this happening to anyone else?

Monument Ave or Cooper River?
In 2015 I was hoping to run two of the biggest 10Ks in the country: the Monument Avenue 10k in Richmond and the Cooper River 10k in Charleston. Unfortunately, next year they are on the same day: March 28. Ugh. I'll be going for a fast time, so my hunch is that Monument Ave will be faster. It should be cooler, and there is…

Are "masters" runners ruining the sport?
Great article: http://blog.petemagill.com/blog/are-older-runners-an-embarrassment-to-the-sport/ "Unless you were formerly or are currently an Olympian or at least a world class runner, you didn’t or aren’t experiencing anything other than manufactured levels of competition. Nothing 'real' about it that isn’t real on any…

Running a lot doesn't kill you after all
Remember that study from a year or two back which supposedly showed that running more than 20 miles a week was hazardous to your health? It was actually just an un-peer-reviewed conference presentation. Now that it has been published in a peer-reviewed journal, that conclusion has been drastically changed, and there is no…

5K on a track versus road
So next week it looks like I'm going to be doing a track 5k. Never done one of those! Much like my treadmill question earlier, I'm asking folks if they have any advice / suggestions for a track versus road 5k. Obviously it will be a little faster than on the roads, but I'm just curious if anyone has any hard numbers -- do…

"Jogging" versus "Jogger."
This came up in a discussion on my profile but I thought the larger group would be interested. So, we all know know that most runners don't like being called "joggers." But I also think that there is a time and a place for the word "jogging" and "jog," as in "cool-down jog" or "jogging to warm up." Agree/disagree? Discuss.

Suggestions for whey protein powder
I'm looking to boost protein consumption while limiting fat. A friend of mine suggested I try Muscle Milk protein powder + apple sauce. I gave it a shot (using Pro Series 50 Intense Vanilla) and it was just sickeningly sweet to me. Anyone have any suggestions for using this stuff that doesn't taste like you are basically…

Welcome and introductions!
Hi everyone, I'm planning rededicating myself to shorter road races in the coming year, and I figured there must be other MFPers who are also interested in improving their 5K times. Let's use this thread to get to know each other -- share as much as you would like about your running story and what you hope to accomplish…

What is your go-to no-cal drink?
I've decided to go off of diet soda due to some evidence that it doesn't help the weight loss process. Now I'm looking for alternatives. What unsweetened beverages with low / no calories do you like?

More on "Great Job" - in the real world!
After inciting a blistering flame war in the general forums on whether it's sometimes insensitive to say "great job" about a workout, I've returned to the relative safety of the Long Distance Runners forum to ask a real world question: If you are running along in a race or workout and someone comes blazing past you at a…

Track racing: Are spikes worth it?
I am signed up for a track meet this summer and I'm doing the 4 * 400 relay. I don't plan on doing much track racing but I expect I will probably participate in a few meets a year. So I'm wondering if it would be worth it to get some spikes. I have racing flats and they seem to perform well on the track. if I was only…

Pro tip: Read the comments before commenting on a workout
Hey folks, just a tip from a fellow fitness buff. If you really want to be supportive of your friends, make sure you read the comments on their workouts before you write "great workout!" Just because someone burned 800 calories doesn't make it great. Typically folks will log their exercise, then comment to let folks know…

How do you know how fast to run in a 5K?
A 5K can be an excruciating distance to race. Do it right, and you're running at the edge of your ability the whole way. Every second of the race, you're thinking you can't possibly hold that speed any longer, and yet somehow you keep going, all the way to the finish. But if you start out too fast, it can ruin the race and…
