Anyone run a 5k all out on a treadmill?
I'm participating in a running study that will involve me doing two 5k time trials on treadmill. I try to avoid the treadmill as much as possible so I've never done anything like this. When I do use a treadmill it is usually for hill work or just an easy warm-up or cool-down. I'm just wondering if anyone has done this kind…

News feed broken. Post your stuff here.
So, since the news feed is borked right now I thought I'd start a thread for runners to post their workouts / thoughts, etc. I'll go first -- here is the link to my recap of the cancelled Minneapolis Marathon that I ran anyways:…

Which group to run in?
I'm going to enter a track 5k this July, and there are two heats. The first heat is the open division, and the second heat is for 17:59 and better pace. I've run two 5ks faster than that, but I seriously doubt I could run that fast on a muggy July evening. So is it better to run in the open division and possibly be way…

Marathon pacing question
So, on Sunday I'm pacing a friend at the Minneapolis Marathon. She wants to get her BQ, which is 3:35, an 8:12 pace. It's looking to be a warm-ish, muggy day, possibly rainy, and the course is flat. I know normally most people like to shoot for an even pace at a marathon but I'm wondering if any of you have thoughts about…

Article: There is no "should" in running
Neat article on Competitor.com: Link to original article: http://running.competitor.com/2014/05/out-there/out-there-there-is-no-should-in-running_102898#e8v6QW2kHx1GkcPR.99

Should runners have "NRVs"?
A big topic of interest on MFP is the "NSV" - non-scale victory. Like when you can fit into jeans a size smaller or someone flirts with you for the first time in years. But what about runners -- should we celebrate "NRVs" -- Non-racing victories? Some sort of accomplishment that isn't a PR or a race win. Maybe it's the…

Are you a planner or a last-minute racer?
There is something to be said about registering early for a race: You are guaranteed a slot if the race fills up, you won't have to worry about the race running out of t-shirts, and you often get a better deal. That said, if you wait until race day to register you know you won't ever have to cancel (and very likely *not*…

Intriguing: New Garmin fitness tracker/GPS
Interesting concept. A fitness tracker with some "serious" running features as well. Is this the holy grail for runners? Or a compromise doomed to failure? http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2457461,00.asp

Strength training for runners
I always tell runners that strength training is the most effective way to avoid repetitive stress injuries. I haven't had this sort of injury in the past year since I started a comprehensive strength training program, so I thought I'd share my workout with you. I put an asterisk by the exercises that specifically target…

Best 5Ks in America?
People often talk about destination marathons and half-marathons, and there are some really famous 10Ks like Cooper River, Peachtree, and the Boulder Bolder. But what about 5Ks? Can we come up with a list of really great 5K races worth traveling for? What are your favorites?

What's the best race number you've ever gotten?

Ever toss your race shirt straight into the charity bin?
My drawers are overflowing with race shirts -- some technical, some cotton. I like to keep the nice ones but lately I've had a string of duds. Even when I do well in a race I don't want to wear a crappy cotton shirt just because the race name is on it. So lately I have just been throwing them straight into the bin we use…

10K strategy?
On the spur of the moment I signed up for a 10K on Saturday April 19. Just thinking out loud about strategy here, feel free to chime in! It's been nearly a year since I ran a 10k, and that was on a muggy summer day (the Peachtree in Atlanta July 4). Assuming the weather is good I think I can do better than that day, except…

What's a less-commonly-run race you'd like to see more of?
For me, I'd like to see some 2-mile races. Also, 30k is an intriguing distance: It's about where most people tend to hit the wall in a marathon, so it'd be neat to just be able to *stop* at that point!

Tapering for a 5K?
In the past I've typically used 5Ks as fitness gauges for longer races; they haven't been ends in themselves. You know the drill: You run your best 5K, plug your time into McMillanrunning.com, and it spits out a prediction for your best marathon or half-marathon time. I've run 5Ks the day after speed work, or right before…

You know you're old when...
... that "edgy" Depeche Mode song from your youth is playing on the Muzak in your neighborhood Ace Hardware ...People your kids' age (if not necessarily your kids) have steady full-time jobs ...You forget the names of young people you meet because they all look the same to you

Intermediate - advanced 5K group -- any interest?
I'm planning on refocusing on the 5K - 10K distance next fall and thinking about setting up a group to discuss this stuff. Any interest? The group would focus on experienced runners looking to improve their times, not c25k. Maybe call it intermediate / advanced 5Kers? Or maybe "Beyond c25k"? Or "Run 5Ks Faster"

Geeky running shoe question
So...I have been running my my Hoka Stinson Tarmacs for about a month now, and I only just realized that they actually came with two sets of insoles. One is very thin and flat and the other has about 4 mm of drop. I had been running with both! In the interest of "nothing new on race day" should I keep them set up this way…

Any suggestions for a cover image?
My design skills aren't great -- anyone have any suggestions for a cover image? We need a square image to go on the front page of our group and a smaller one for the groups listing: 275 X 275 and 95 X 95. Any ideas? [update: I found a random image online but am still up for suggestions]

Stupid paranoid marathon timing question
I am getting ready to enter the Pike's Peak Marathon and you are required to enter a qualifying time, down to the second. The results page for the race I want to use gives the time to the tenth of a second: 3:42:44.6 Technically according to the USATF road races are timed to the nearest second, not nearest tenth, and the…

Would you rather run in 80°F or 30°F?
A runner in my group just posted that she'd take 80 over 30 any day. Personally I'd much prefer 30 -- assuming it wasn't freezing rain or something. What's the coldest and warmest temp (with normal humidity and no wind/rain) that you consider "comfortable" to run in for a long-ish run? For me it's 25° and 75° (fahrenheit).

Do you HAVE to have an even mileage?
Today I got much flak from my running group for stopping my Garmin at 14.99 miles instead of running an extra .01 to get a round number. I actually kind of enjoyed seeing how frustrated everyone was. One woman asked if she could take my GPS and run the extra distance for me! So, let's take a little poll -- how close do you…

Help from heavy lifters?
I am a runner, but I really want to be able to bench press 200 pounds. I have made a goal to bench 200 by the end of July. Currently I can lift 120. The problem is, I absolutely HATE weight lifting. I think it is really boring, and it is just no fun being in a gym. I'd much rather be outside running. What is the ABSOLUTE…
