Sorry for the lack of updates, everyone. Everything should be up to date now. Just a couple days left in the month, let's finish strong! I am off my 40 mpw study so I've crushed my initial goal for the month and still have 20-miler planned for tomorrow. July should be even bigger!

I plugged my 5k PR into McMillan and it pegs me at 63 seconds for the 400. I guess we'll just have to wait and see!
-
Wow, that is smoking! I would be very happy to run the 400 in under 65. I think the best I have ever done (in college) was 60.

Thanks I ordered a pair of Saucony Endorphin MD4s -- they were on sale at RunningWarehouse. Ordered a full size smaller than my training shoes. I'm planning on wearing them with very thin socks and, obviously, only for short distances, so I think this should work out fine.

Any suggestions on a particular model? I have fairly wide feet so I like a big toebox.
-
That sounds pretty good to me. So we do agree, we just have different ways of saying it!

I agree with Carson that you are in shape to run a strong pace. But I disagree that you should take it easy the first mile. It's just too short a race to mess around with that. Go out at a solid pace. You may need to hold back some keep your pace under 7:00/mile, but I would not go slower than 7:10. You will start to feel…

Agree with pretty much everything being said here. Most experts now advise to keep fueling to a minimum on training runs, except as a race-simulation, to make sure your stomach can handle it. For a marathon, I eat my last meal 2 hours out, then have a gel 15 minutes before the race, and one every 4 miles thereafter (for me…

When I got serious about running about 5 years ago I went from running about 3 miles at a time to running a marathon. This took about 18 months. Edit: I should add I've now run 10 marathons (or 11, depending on how you count them) and they are never easy!
-
What I'm more concerned about is if I'm the one doing the complimenting / supporting. Just want to make sure that any support I offer is actually taken as such.
-
Yes, the treadmill counts as long as you are running on it! We draw the line at walking (sorry -- but there are other challenges for that).
-
I just hadn't posted the latest spreadsheet here. The spreadsheet itself is automatic, but the image that appears here on MFP has to be added manually by me. So May is up to date, and now June is too. Great job, everyone!
-
Well done!
-
Nearly a week in and folks are starting to put in some serious miles! Updated the spreadsheet today. Keep it up everyone!

I did 6* 1/2 mile intervals on the treadmill today. It felt surprisingly easy. My 5k PR is 17:49, which works out to a 5:44 pace. I'm not sure I'm in quite as good shape right now so I took the intervals a bit easier at first -- 10mph, which is 6:00/mile. Then I gradually increased the pace each time until the last one was…

Anthony Famiglietti lives in our town -- he was on the US Olympic Team in 2004 and 2008 in steeplechase and is still wicked fast. He can finish a 5k in under 14 minutes, but he still takes the time to give pointers to regular runners before and after the race, and always says "hi" or "good job" when he blazes by you during…

The toughest thing about training for marathons and triathlons is avoiding injury. You are already injured. Set a goal to rehab your injuries and lose, say, 15 pounds. Then reassess, and move on from there.
-
So the consensus seems to be that just about any encouragement, any time will be taken positively by most runners. Glad to hear my suspicions confirmed! I just need to come up with a few more synonyms for "good job" -- that gets old after a while!
-
You should ask Zekela about that. BTW, McMillanRunning suggests 7:30-8:30 easy run pace for a 20-minute 5ker, so you're not really running that much faster than recommended.
-
That's one reason I haven't really made the effort to join MMs -- don't like the gear much. Maybe we should start a rival group with a better logo!
-
Look, this isn't the point. The kid is disappointed. What I was complaining (badly) about is the equivalent of your crying kid coming home with his disappointing B+ and you saying "Great job" and going about your business, ignoring anything else he has to say. All I was trying to suggest is that in this case you might say…
-
This is absolutely the best thing to come out of this thread!
-
Seriously, though, what I was trying to say (obviously not very well) is that if you honestly were shooting for a 3:20 and you only ran a 3:27, you are probably disappointed. Wouldn't it be better to acknowledge that than to just say "good job"?
-
Touché!
-
Apparently it's a lifter who also runs. We odd lifters will never understand the ways of "real" lifters.
-
I'm an odd lifter myself.
-
Lots of people would. But it all depends on the individual. I've seen "great workout" posts when someone got injured during the workout. You consider that "odd to complain about"?
-
Great reply!
-
Elliptical, bike, stair climber, uphill treadmill walking. if none of those work, then I just start crying.

1. You probably just need to run more -- that will help your feet adjust to the pounding. 2. Go to a running store and ask for "injinji" socks. They still exist. Online try runningwarehouse or roadrunnersports. Also, I highly recommend "trail toes" for blister/chafing prevention. 3. Sorry, can't help you with this…
