  • Yeah, my PR pace is 5:45 but I was thinking of starting out at a 6:00 pace and then bumping up or down based on how I'm feeling. The other weird / stupid thing about treadmills is that they are in MPH instead of MPM. By my calculations, at a 6:00 pace, every 1/10th MPH increase / decrease should be the equivalent of about…
  • I do find it especially challenging to get into the proper mindset for an afternoon / evening race. For my last one I actually had a glass of wine a couple hours out from the race. I'm not sure it helped my race but I think it might have improved my mindset. For morning races I've never really had trouble focusing in on…
  • I knew something was wrong there -- that just didn't seem right. 6% of runners finish 22:00 or faster, which means 300,000 in a year. Still fewer than complete a marathon, though!
  • Case in point: the winner of the 5K we timed this morning finished in 22:42! http://davidsontiming.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Queen_City_Overall_PDF.pdf Eyeballing this chart, I'd estimate that about 600 out of 10,000 runners finished under 22:00. That suggests about 0.6 % of all runners doing 22 minutes or better.…

  • I have registered for events using a similar procedure and it works pretty well. With only 4500 slots I'm not sure a qualification process would work. I like their charity option -- actually seems like quite a bargain compared to what you have to raise for other races. And while Big Sur is spectacular, there are other…
  • Personally I would skip it. There are lots of half marathons but this looks to be a special day for parent and kids. Sign up for a different race on a less-busy day. Unless you find that there are no less-busy days. In that case I'd cut down on your kids' activities. You need time for yourself too!
  • I use towel racks from Lowes to hold my medals. Works pretty well, and cheaper than an "official" medal display.
  • So in this one you eat Cheetahs? Or try to outrun them so they don't eat you?
  • Yep, that's how they should feel. When you do your next 20 miler, those last few miles will feel a LOT easier! Then before you know it, you'll be tapering and everything will seem easy. Just tough it out for two more weeks til your taper starts and you will be home free. You've put in the training and you'll be able to…
  • 1. People compliment me on how thin I look. 2. I can run a freaking marathon. 3. I can run 10 freaking marathons.
  • True, experience might be part of it... and also with the marathon. That is one of my frustrations with a marathon -- how long you have to train for it and then one little thing can throw off the entire race..then it's back to square one for another 18 weeks! It's possible that I've just never put it all together for a…
  • Before you buy a new watch, try the following: 1. Restart: http://support-en-us.nikeplus.com/app/answers/detail/article/sportwatch-restart/a_id/20905 If that doesn't work, then 2. Reset: http://support-en-us.nikeplus.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20906/p/
  • That would describe 80 percent of my workouts. I think there is some natural variance between individuals -- otherwise why would it be that I can beat you by 1.5 minutes at 5k and you can beat me by 12 minutes at marathon distance?
  • I have thought about this the few times. Whatever answer I come up with, the next thing i try to do is to do it without the lottery!
  • For me you have to add 30 minutes. I think I'm just not as good at the longer distances.
  • That is an insane workout! I'd have trouble with all of it. A couple of friends of mine did the original Murph not long ago. (pull-ups, push-ups, squats). I. Could. Never. (Though never say never, right? Maybe this will be my NRV next year...) Also great job on the 7:22 pace!
  • Swelling, maybe, but i'm not so sure about pain. I had a bruised knee a while back and tried knee braces, KT tape, and ace bandages, and none of them helped. In fact, in general they made the pain worse. But depending on your particular issue, it might help you. I like the zensah calf sleeves and I know they also make knee…
  • Yep. That works out to about 1 minute faster in a 5k per 10 pounds of excess fat lost. Obviously if you lose muscle then it probably won't help you much, but if you keep running and you have excess fat to lose, you can gain a lot of speed!
  • Ha! There is actually an ultrarunner who lives near me and pushes a jogging stroller on his long runs to hold water / supplies. He is a male model so is super concerned about his skin. Even mid-summer he runs in long sleeves and a wide-brimmed hat. I can only imagine what sort of exfoliants/moisturizers he totes along in…
  • Wow, great job! And awesome idea for a thread, Jenn!
  • Updated the spreadsheet! I finished week 2 with 69.9 miles. I was shooting for 70 but miscalculated...oh well, close enough! For the rest of the month I am limited to 40 mpw due to a running study I am participating in. Keep on running / logging, folks!
  • When I was in college I was the worst runner on my track team at the end of the season. I wasn't the worst at the *start* of the season but everyone who was worse than me quit the team...and meanwhile I became a much better runner. I finished several races in last place. As an adult, I haven't had that happen in a race but…
  • Congratulations! You can sign up for nearly every 5k on the actual race day -- just show up with your money (bring cash or check). The only exceptions are huge events where the logistics preclude race-day registration. I like the idea of a birthday 5k!
  • 47, 6'2". I've noticed a huge difference with my weight. 17:49 @177 1:26 @180 3:22 @185
  • Okay, here's mine. At the start of this year I decided to make an effort to do more trail running as I built up to a 50-mile race. As many of you know, the race didn't go well; I ended up dropping out after 50k, which was still a pretty substantial effort but not what I was hoping for. But despite missing that goal I'm…
  • My understanding of how this works is not that "starvation mode" is real -- it is NOT true that you actually lose more weight when consuming more calories. What is really going on is that when people get too hungry, they overeat to compensate. So the idea is to eat strategically to avoid this. You might actually be eating…
  • That makes some sense. And yes, the psychology is a huge part of it, but what doesn't make sense is to wreck your body in an effort to get the right mindset for the race. I do think that happens to a lot of people who really struggle to get that 20-mile run in when they actually don't need to. But of course, for a lot of…
  • Even when I'm not training for ultras I take about 30 percent off of the MFP estimates. I don't think those estimates are designed for folks who are putting in 40, 50, 70 miles a week.
  • I think maybe part of the issue is that the burns for long runs get overestimated on MFP. When you are putting in back-to-back 20-milers at a relatively slow pace, you might be logging 4+ hour runs. But in marathon training your long run might be 3 hours. Since it measures burn in minutes, MFP would say the slower long run…
