...and in 2 more posts, we'll have to start a new thread!

I don't mind it, but after 15 miles or so it kind of gets old. I better get used to it though because it's slated to rain for my 50-mile race on Saturday!
-
Yep, it's all relative. I have always been a casual runner but stepped it up about 3 years ago (when my kids started college). At that point I could do roughly a 24-minute 5K. Last fall I got my time down to 17:49, and I'm going to try and improve on that next fall.

Don't forget, we have a dedicated thread in this group just for upcoming races: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/387797-upcoming-races And another one to post your results: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/1038401-post-your-recent-results

Wow, that is crazy! I never know how to pace myself for events like that. Do you go all-out in the first one or try to be consistent throughout?

Leatherwood 50-mile race on Saturday. First-ever ultra, so my main goal is just to finish. But I really don't want to be out there for more than 12 hours, either!

What you wear really depends on your pace (the faster you are going, the less you would wear). But if you don't like the cold you are probably going to want a raincoat (preferably one with lots of zippers to vent if necessary). Then wear a compression base layer (I'd suggest long sleeves), plus gloves and a hat that covers…

Currently training for a 50-mile ultramarathon but already looking forward to getting back to those events where I am strongest: 5K to 10K.

Yep, totally fine to split up some of your midweek runs. In my case I have two "quality" workouts a week -- a long run and a speed / tempo session. The long run is best kept intact, and the speed session should also usually be kept intact. But otherwise, I just fill in miles as needed to get to my weekly mileage goal. For…

Heading into the final week of the month! Don't forget, this is an extra-special week with an extra day at the end (aka Dave was too lazy to modify the spreadsheet). Lots of solid performances and some folks already reaching their goals. Unfortunately it looks like I will be about 30 miles short. The taper week means I…

Interesting -- my time has now been officially verified, but they changed it! It now reads 3:42:44. So I guess that's what I should have gone with, but either way I'm in, so NBD.

You are ready! That's more than most people do for a 50K race. Sounds like you have a great plan. Now just get out there and have fun. And as my ultra-running buddy Jeff McGonnell (who has run over 100 ultras) likes to say, "Start slowly, then ease off a bit."
-
For me it's a manners thing. You are running in a crowd and need to say something to a fellow runner ("Hey, I like that shirt!" or "You've run the Peachtree 10K too?" or "Your iPod is falling off your belt!"). If they have their music cranked up it just makes the run less fun / social. But the safety issue is real, even on…

Does the pain get worse as you continue? If not, it might just be general aches and pains and not a true injury. New, properly shoes might help as well. You could also consider increasing the incline (and slowing the pace) -- this is actually lower-impact than a flat surface. And as others have suggested, icing and…

I ran Crater lake and it is my favorite too! If Pike's is second to that it will be awesome!

^^^ This! Personally I have been using a set of North Face hybrids that I like a lot -- it is all about the fit. Separately, the question of waterproof or not depends on where you will be hiking. If hiking through the water is inevitable -- i.e. you will be fording streams -- you do not want waterproof. The water will get…

Marikevr, congrats on your 50k -- sounds like you had a solid day...sometimes all it takes is a nice easy long run to shake out an injury. I'm entering full taper mode preparing for my 50 miler at the end of the month. My injury seems to be sorting itself out as well but I did lose about 50 miles worth of training earlier…

Yep, I have run courses that were short on my Garmin and certified. The problem is, the course isn't necessarily set up correctly. If the race organizer puts the start line in the wrong place then it doesn't matter how carefully the distance was measured. It's more common on non-certified courses but it can happen anywhere.

Some roads were designed for horse-and-buggies. Are you saying cars shouldn't be allowed to use those roads? Some car drivers drive recklessly. Are you saying no one should be able to drive cars? I'm glad you ride on paths, but I was referring specifically to your point that cyclists who ride on streets shouldn't do it…

March 13 -- about 40% of the way through the month. Most folks are still doing great, but I count 13 runners who haven't updated their miles this week. Surely you're not all out with injuries. Make sure you update the sheet! (I've put an updated version in the first post in the thread) I was injured last week but am back…

Serious cyclists riding 20+ MPH are a hazard on greenways. It doesn't make sense for walkers, people with dogs and strollers, and bikes to share the same path. They are fine for families, and for casual riders tootling along, but greenways are really no place for packs of lycra-clad riders. Cyclists should obey traffic…

I agree with the uneven / dangerous part of this. It really stinks to run on poorly-maintained sidewalks. I think runners at night should always wear reflective gear and blinky lights, whether or not they run on the sidewalk. But if you are having joint issues just from running on concrete, I'd suggest getting shoes with…

Find a workout group / buddy / class. That way if you don't go, you are not just letting yourself down, you're letting the whole group down. Works for me!
-
Yep, though it sounds like you are pretty much already at that base level. You might even consider building to a training peak between now and then. Maybe run a 10K in May? You could look for an intermediate 10K plan, such as this one: http://www.halhigdon.com/training/51123/10K-Intermediate-Training-Program Then take a…

I would suggest moving to a more advanced marathon plan. That sounds to me like almost a 5k-to-marathon plan, if you're only doing 15 miles a week to start. If you've already done a half, you're in better shape than that. How many MPW were you doing for your half? What are you planning to do for peak mileage during…
-
I agree, but it was just too cool not to do. I doubt it will be a problem, that was just me being worried on registration day. I'm on the official registration list, and it looks to me like if folks get pulled, they have an opportunity to correct the entry before they are formally withdrawn from the race.…

Heh. Actually this would be an issue for almost anyone -- there are two fields in the race, and they check everyone's time to make sure that no one is sandbagging to get into field 2 (for 3:45 to 5:30 marathoners). They do have a legitimate reason for this: they want to spread out the field. With 700 runners on the trail,…

...and I'm in! I went with the rounded-up number. Hopefully it will go through without a hitch!
-
I think I'm going to go with rounding up. That is the official USATF rule, so if they question my time I can come back with that.
-
I just use a spreadsheet that I save on Dropbox. Then I can use the dropbox app on my Google Nexus, iPhone, or any computer to check my workouts.
