  • I had myself a herniated disk, and a bulging one at the ripe old age of 21. Once I could comfortably stand up and move around, I started ab exercises. Gentle crunches, mostly. And an exercise for my back which involved lying on my stomach with my toes/feet anchored, putting my hands on the floor at my chest (push up…
  • hahah... is this an autocorrect moment of brilliance?
  • My current fave is 1/2 cup egg whites with an 1/8 cup sharp cheddar and a teaspoon or so of sriracha sauce, over a half an English muffin (no butter!). Egg whites: 63 cal. (13 grams protein!) Sriracha: 5 cal. Cheese: 55 cal. Eng. muffins: 65 And drink... 8oz skim milk: 80 cal. Total: 268 cal
  • It's SO HARD! I make sure I get a lot of protein and that all or most of my fats are good fats, and that my carbs are mostly whole grain (minus the fruit leather type fast acting workout fuel for long runs). I take a multi, and then I'll shoot for eating a whole fruit and whole vegetable each day... And I just realized…

  • Weights first! You need all that glycogen to power through sets and cardio allows your body to utilize some fat for energy even while you are doing cardio.... Then finish up the glycogen stores you have left (at that point you would either need to stop or refuel.) I start my weight workouts with a slow, steady abdominal…
  • For running.... GET FITTED! I was miserable and injured for months after toughing out the wrong shoes. For lifting, any flat sneakers will do... Like converse... :-) I have had success buying the previous years model of running shoes. Yup, they change them every couple of years but typically the shoes remain very similar…
  • sriracha sauce has five calories/tsp. I count it, but its obviously not much....I use sriracha values for unmarked hotsauce.
  • According to my brown belt brother and his instructor, the self defense aspect of martial arts doesn't really kick in for a good year or so... before the moves become accurate, strong, and instinctive. Classes are pretty non-flexible for those who are just squeezing exercise in wherever they can in their day, and it does…
  • How can men get poly-cystic ovarian syndrome without ovaries?
  • Yep. It happens. I have gotten myself injured as my form starts to slide so when this happens I stop and switch to a safe, low impact range of motion, like a stationary bike, and do some heart rate training.
  • Love love love art and writing and fashion.... And I'm training for a marathon. I'll be your friend! And I've been to Poland, Austria and Slovakia... Does that count? :-)
  • Hold my breath until I pass out. Just kidding. I get very quiet and then say something like. That's very interesting... If I don't get coffee soon I think I might die... how about you? Sometimes I just heave a big, deep sigh from the depths of my soul and say "I'm such a freak, I know." And smile. It's hard to argue with…
  • I was constantly cold when I first started losing weight... Used heated blankets (in Houston!) Sweats, and multiple hot showers a day just to function. (wool coats all day at school) It became ridiculous. Not to sound like snake oil salesman, but weight lifting about every other day as heavy as I could, and cutting my…
  • Bookmarked...
  • After logging consistently for several months, eating right became intuitive. MFP made it automatic... gave me a "feel" for food. I came back just for a tune-up and to start really working on building muscle. I guess one could say my running shoes are a crutch because they hold my feet in the right position, and my car is…
  • Yes... I do increase my calories... I am now up to 1700 or so a day, sometimes more. My friends have asked me if I've lost weight. I tell them I'm "compacting" =P It's hard to up your calories, but you will need to. When I started lifting without eating more, I wound up feeling sore for a VERY long time... almost a week,…
  • I'm no expert, but have you considered taking a women's self defense class? Around where I am the community has free, no men allowed, rape aggression defense classes that are awesome. And adding in strength training might help a little. You are strong and beautiful and courageous for continuing to fight for your self, and…
  • I haven't tried this yet, but I'm really interested.... TRX suspension workouts are supposed to be awesome for strength and take up virtually no room in your house... it was developed by a navy seal.
  • Thanks! Glad I'm not alone in my love of Russian. =) I want some Russian family! I've studied it off and on since high school but don't know anyone who speaks it.
  • I keep a journal.... written in cyrillic. Because I was such a secretive teenager and now it's a habit.
  • A sweet friend of mine from high school has had to cope with severe EDS for years now. My heart goes out to all of you.
  • The strength training deal really does work. I've always been annoyed with my shape, and then one day it occurred to me that creating muscle in the right places would actually give me appropriate curves without having to gain any fat back. BINGO! I'm thrilled with the results so far and I'm only just beginning.
  • "thanks, but I've got it." And I wear sweats and a tee. They stare a lot less when I do that.
  • Only with my dearest friends and their children. =) Oh... and if a guy I do not know well forces a hug on me I turn to ice. I can't help it. I just.... crystallize
  • Single... Yes. Alone... Nope. No way. GIRLS NIGHT!!!!
  • P.s. Tips I have found... Ibuprofen stops your body from producing the "cramping" hormone. I can't remember the name. It is also anti inflammatory. If I was suffering from cramps, as soon as I felt them coming on, I took ibuprofen with some bread/crackers/gentle food. Also, I took two Drammamine tablets, (that is one dose)…
  • What if I told you that it has hit me WHILE I was at the gym, walking on a treadmill? :-p I barely made it to the locker room before I had to start crawling. Or during a championship basketball game in high school while I was point guard? During adolescence I would attempt to knock myself out. Exercise only applies to…
