  • Such a strange concept, toning. Do people think they're shaping the muscles somehow? "I'm toning my arms" - yeah, and I'm toning my belly fat. Fat and muscle are just 2 types of tissue. You can increase or reduce the volume of either in your body but for neither can you change the shape it grows. That's decided by genetics…
  • Oh, and.. a bit controversial I'm sure, but I'm just gonna throw it out there... There's no such thing as toning. It doesn't exist. You either build muscle, retain muscle or lose muscle. Nothing else. The first is mostly achieved by lifting while eating surplus. The second is achieved by lifting while eating a deficit and…
  • Take any dumbell movement - curls, tri extensions, lateral raises, whatever - and do as many reps as you can with good form until you can't physically lift another one. If you got more than 15 reps, your weight is too light. If you got more than 8, your weight will be too light pretty soon. It's great that you're getting…
  • about 3200 to 3500.
  • Egg whites = PROTEEEIINN!! My quest for protein is all consuming! :D I do eat the whole egg though. I just like the yolk a lot so if I'm having eggs I'll work the calories into my limits.
  • 4 days for me: Sat - Chest/Tri's/Core Sun - Legs Tues - Shoulders/Traps/Core Thurs - Back/Bi's/Calves When I switch from bulk to cut I'll throw a couple of cardio days in on the off days. Jay
  • I'd usually consider rice, bread and chapati to be carb sources... Chicken, fish, meat, cottage cheese etc - those are the protein sources I'd recommend.
  • Protein is set pretty low on here. Try thinking of your protein as a target to hit and go over and your carbs and fats as targets to stay under. I get over 300g a day quite regularly
  • Probably the most public case (over here in the UK anyway): http://lifestyle.aol.co.uk/2011/03/06/michelle-heaton-diet-pills-gave-me-heart-disease/ http://article.wn.com/view/2012/01/09/Diet_pill_use_left_me_with_high_a_risk_pregnancy_Michelle_He/ Food for thought...
  • I've not read it, but I'm told The New Rules of Lifting for Women is a very good place to start. Good luck!
  • 1: Make up a bunch of stuff about the human body 2: Back it up with fake allusions to clocks 3: ????? 4: Profit!
  • They're good programs. I did a round of P90x and got some good results. They're good for getting you working if you don't know what you're doing. Sure, you can get better results with a whole bunch of research into training methods, nutrition and supplementation and a gym. Or with a skilled personal trainer. A lot of…
  • Yep, chicken is awesome. It's a complete protein source so has all the bits of protein you need. I get through over a kg a week of chicken breast :)
  • Nah, the default protein setting on here is really low. Mine's set at 240g a day and some days I go over that. I ate over 320g protein on Tuesday out of fluke. I wouldn't worry, it's really hard to accidentally get too much protein.
  • If you lose a pound a week and it's half fat and half muscle, you've only lost half a pound of fat. If you maintain your muscle through lifting while in a deficit, that pound you lost will be much closer to a full pound of fat. "I lost a pound of fat" is more impressive than "I lost a pound of weight" :) Jay
  • Here are some universal truths about gaining muscle - although I'm sure someone will disagree with me directly: - You'll need to get over the scale number. - You can't gain muscle without gaining weight. - You can't gain significant muscle in a caloric deficit. - When gaining muscle, you'll gain some amount of fat. - You…
  • Oops! I just re-read the thread title! I'm more of an under-weighter aiming to do bodybuilding... Although I was a bigger guy before I started MFP :P
  • I gained a bit of muscle and cut down to my lean bf goal. Now I'm bulking until March (12 week total bulk time) and then cutting hard for 8 weeks to hit lean and ripped for my wedding day ;) After that I'll have the time to get on a good long bulk to gain a bunch of mass and then cut it back again to get ripped. I reckon…
  • Doesn't sound kosher to me. Although I looked up the info for my bloodtype (O) out of interest and it seemed at a glance to be everything I'm doing already so..
  • Welcome welcome :)
  • I echo what some other folk have said about it all being personal to you. Even using a formula to work out my maintenance level or using MFP's recommended maintenance cals wasn't quite right for me. I also noticed that as I changed my body composition (more muscle, less fat), my maintenance level of calories changed. This…
  • Brad Pitt in Fight Club. But then I'd only be *****ing I'm too skinny... Maybe a bit bigger like 50 cent - except not black. That'd look weird with my head on...
  • Don't I know it brother! It's bloody hard gaining significant muscle mass even with testicals!
  • To clarify the makeup at the gym thing... Come from work and straight into the gym? Fair enough. Specifically applied a FULL face of makeup with mascara and lipliner, selected your nicest bang on trend outfit with cool shades pushed atop your head and all your fancy jewellery on? You probably aint there to work out hard…
  • But this little short film is the best: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tI9F68-nGc&feature=related All the gym idiots in one session! :)
  • This guy is a genius... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZUK1EIQ9r0&feature=related And so is this guy... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2ouqPFb3hM&feature=related
  • Meh.. This thread's a bit of fun - unless I missed the point... Women in full makeup and disco outfits don't REALLY annoy me. Guys who swing back their dumbbell curls with their whole body don't REALLY annoy me. Hell, people sweating on the seats don't even REALLY annoy me, it takes me a second to wipe it off. Even things…
  • Guys who wander around the locker room naked for ages. On the flip side, guys who look at you like you're gay because you take a shower naked (I like to get clean all over..)
  • Wander around telling everyone you're going to gain 40lb of muscle and get cut up at the same time.
  • The guy with little 14" biceps who holds his arms a foot away from his body like his massive lats are forcing him to walk that way. Like a balloon under each arm.
