  • Same. My third grader reads one or two "chapter books (100ish pages)" a week. Our school expects nightly homework to be completed in every grade, including kindergarten. Most of the homework requires a parent's assistance and takes 15 to 30 minutes. Since the second grade, homework has also included 20 minutes of reading.…
  • You had a bad day. Leave it at that. Forgive yourself and set yourself up for success tomorrow. A bad day doesn't mean it's all over and you've failed. Acknowledge that you needed a day off emotionally and physically, and allow yourself to rest and indulge a little. Get back to it in the morning.
  • I did a headstand (against the wall) in yoga class!
  • My back pain pretty much vanished when I started sleeping with a body pillow (I'm a side sleeper). It helps to have something to rest my top knee and arm on. Also, if you can't get a new mattress, try a memory foam mattress topper -- they will add some life and comfort to an old mattress.
  • Intensive outpatient therapy is good. Ultimately, you and your family have done your part in getting her to treatment. Now, she will ultimately decide whether treatment is successful. Many times, multiple attempts at treatment are unsuccessful, but it is important to encourage her to keep trying. Hopefully, she will…
  • No one noticed you weren't there. They were busy getting their workouts in. If you want to go back, go back. If not, cancel your membership and save your money.
  • Your sister needs inpatient treatment -- physically and psychiatrically. Call your Primary Care Provider and ask how to go about filing a family-generated legal petition to have her undergo a mandatory psychiatric evaluation. Family members can do this, provided there is evidence of self-harm, and self-cutting would…
  • This hasn't happened to me, but it has happened to a few embarassed guys who I've helped lift the bar off. It's something that happens in a weight room -- not just to women in the weight room. OP, just get your workout program written down, put your music on, look straight ahead, and march into that weight room. Every…
  • Sumo deadlifts and goblet squats seem to hit my inner thighs the hardest.
  • I know that my insurance (a self-insured plan from a health system) requires a 2-year waiting period (clarification: the insured must be on the plan for 2 years) before coverage for WLS is provided in order to avoid people switching jobs or switching insurance plans to get the surgery and then quitting/switching back.…
  • I don't think marriage counseling works well. I do think individual counseling helps a lot -- to assist each person in clarifying their goals and desires, and to help each change their behavior if necessary to reach those goals. I'm highly pro-counseling, but the couples counseling I did with my husband prior to separating…
  • As a sleever, I will recognize that your heart is in the right place, OP. Protein and veggies are the mainstays of our post-op eating plan. A grill pan sounds wonderful!
  • Treat it like your job. Do you always leap out of bed smiling at the thought of going to work? I don't. But I go anyway. If you wouldn't call in sick to work, don't skip the gym. "I don't feel like it," isn't a good enough excuse.
  • Have you considered finding a good therapist? Therapy can help when we are stuck repeating the same unhealthy behaviors over and over again. I found it very helpful in changing my thoughts and behavior patterns early in my process, and consider it a powerful tool to help attain goals and make meaningful change.
  • I take Premier Protein Shakes and protein bars with me when I travel, even 3 years out. I can always find something that works for me, but I like to make sure my bases are covered when it comes to getting my protein in. I find that I need to set limits for myself before leaving home. Is this a "fun vacation" where I'm…
  • I think they would be accurate enough. I've had mine for more than 3 years and it works well. I'd imagine, like most health and fitness equipment, that it is used heavily for the first week and then sits around collecting dust until January 1st of the next year.
  • I read a recent study that was conducted with Registered Dietitians as the subjects. Even they, of all people, were guilty of severely underestimating their food consumption in their daily journals. OP, no one here is trying to attack you. Most of us have been there. I have been there more times than you can count. What I…
  • Edit: My post didn't save... Not at all. My husband has no college degree. He did not have any special job skills, other than cooking in restaurant kitchens, when he applied for his current position. He is a very hard worker, can pass a drug screen, and was willing to learn on the job and study at home to pass a licensing…
  • I tend to have about a 4 pound weight swing in a month's time, with my heaviest weight occurring the week I ovulate. I don't gain as much the week of my period, but I do have a lot of cravings, and generally won't lose that week, either.
  • I put myself through community college/nursing school working a minimum wage job and paying for all tuition and books out of pocket -- no loans or grants. My family was not particularly supportive and my generation (sister and cousins) were the first to go to college. It can be done if you want it bad enough, but it is…
  • One of my first jobs was at McDonalds. It wasn't all that HARD, and didn't require SKILLS, but it absolutely did suck, which motivated me to go to community college and get my nursing degree with no help or encouragement from anyone. I don't buy the argument that privilege or money is required to get an education. Anyone…
  • 3 years out and I still buy too much food, cook too much food, and put too much food on my plate. My husband laughs at me when I serve myself something I really like. He'll laugh and say, "There's no way you can eat even half of that!" I tell him, "I know, but I like to think about eating all of it!" Sometimes I miss…
  • Thanks! Any brands for pants? I'm really not sure which would be the best? I'm leaning towards a Camelbak L.U.X.E. NV for a day pack and Merrell boots, but I'll look at the Raichle boots as well. Any more info?
  • I was thinking about this today and found it amusing.... On a daily basis I interact with: 2 people who are post VSG 1 person with a failed lap-band who converted to bypass 1 person with a very successful bypass 1 person who uses an online fitness/health coach to guide her eating 1 person who eats/trains for bikini…
  • I've never kept my WLS a secret -- I'm open with anyone who has asked if I've lost weight (thousands by now?) and give details to anyone who inquires about the details of my eating. In my experience post-WLS, I have not had one single person question, belittle, judge or debate my choice. Also in my experience, I've never…
  • "I had WLS recently and am working very hard to be fit and healthy. I can find something appropriate to eat almost any where, but you'll probably notice that my eating habits are very different. I'd be happy to explain more if you're interested." Just be matter of fact. Don't lie. Don't be embarrassed or feel self…
  • Honestly, I'm 3 years out from surgery and have been quite successful at changing all aspects of my life, but I am still scared that I will screw this up and gain it all back and more. I am a terribly compulsive eater, and like an alcoholic, addict, or someone who suffers from a chronic illness, I know that I will always…
  • I'd recommend a website called "MyFitnessPal" that let's you track your calories and exercise for free. I've heard good things about it.
  • Al Anon, which I believe is a global organization, would be a great place for you to start.
