Yes - a mask, a reclining chair, dark and quiet for about 20 minutes. Measures oxygen in and out and CO2. Everything you want to know is here: http://www.newleaffitness.com/NewLeaf/NL_metabolism.html Then they put you on a treadmill to measure your efficiency and determine your zones for fat burn, cardio, and your…

And yes, I am doing strength training as well as fat burn and cardio - the plan is definitely to try to improve the numbers!

Hey, guys... I was not tested for BMR, which must be done just after waking. And regarding how low it is, here's the deal: 1.) Menopause 2.) Low thyroid, but not low enough to treat 3.) Antidepressant 4.) Quit smoking (previously, restarted because of weight hit, but metabolism does not recover) All of those things can…

And that, my friend, is the trouble with calculations. I had the mask on yesterday and my ACTUAL RMR is 1097. It doesn't matter what the standard charts say.

Way to go! Keep up the great work!

Tell him this isn't about HIM, it's about YOU trying to get healthy! Losing weight usually involves major lifestyle changes and paying attention to what you're doing and what you're eating. Funny how some men get jealous of women paying attention to themselves rather than them! I think some men, while they fantasize about…

For joejccva71: Age: 51 Weight: 177 Height: 5'5" Body Fat: 35.5% (according to my scanning scale - website calculator says 41, so who knows?) Been in menopause for a while. Formerly on meds that whacked my metabolism.

SpaceMarcus is right - it's about getting your heart rate into the fat burning zone for an amount of time. I can't run due to crunchy knees - just had cortisone injections about 6 weeks ago. I power walk on a treadmill and do other cardio machines that don't require weight-bearing and knee-bending at the same time (I can…

I hear ya. I was discouraged last week because I've been working my butt off and I gained weight. I got slammed bigtime, and the whole topic deteriorated into a high school slugfest. As if I didn't feel bad enough from not losing weight! People either didn't look at my diary, or if they did, they had nothing but criticism.…

There is a testing locator on their page: http://www.newleaffitness.com/ I would think the cost would vary greatly depending on the facility offering the testing. I got it at a health club - I think there are sports medicine facilities and other places that may offer it. Let's just say I paid upwards of $200 - and that…

Try to estimate the amount of leeks (should be very close to no calories) and Brie (about 100 calories per ounce) and enter those separately. Then enter the kind of bread or bun you had. That's what I do.

I love quinoa! But if it isn't pre-washed, you have to rinse it well. (I always buy Red Mill - it's pre-washed). Then I dry-toast it in a sauce pan until it's lightly browned and the seeds start to pop - add stock and seasonings (1.5 to 1 ratio), cover and simmer for 15 min - let stand for 10, just like rice. YUM!

You can do cardio every day, but give it a rest one day a week. Weights, strength training - things that make your muscles sore, should only be done every OTHER day - your muscles need a rest because that work tears them down. Every day, I do 1/2 hour cardio, then without cooling down, either upper or lower body weights,…

How are you eating? When I was 230 a few years ago, I dropped a bunch of weight right away when I changed to a healthy diet. But since your profile and diary is not public, it's hard to tell if you're eating healthy or are on an unsustainable path.

Lean Cuisines! I've practically lived on them, and I think they taste much better than other brands. Quite a variety to choose from, too.

Apples do the same thing to me, but I tolerate oatmeal well. Maybe it has something to do with the fiber content, but then corn should send me over the top, which it doesn't. So, I don't eat apples much - I eat bananas.

Are you wearing stability or motion control shoes? They're supposed to help. I have flat feet and develop shin splints, even just power walking. Got Saucony ProGrid Omni 9 shoes and foot and shin pain are GONE. Worth a try. If you have a shop near you that specializes in running shoes, they my analyze the way you run and…

I'm going through the exact same thing, but with lesser results on the measurements. I'm now doing about 600 calorie workouts daily, where before I was doing NONE. Also doing weights 6 days a week (alternating upper and lower body). After two weeks, I've gained a pound! I'm pretty fed up. Not ready to give up, but very…

If you're really watching your carbs, you will have to watch your fruits. Acquaint yourself with the idea of glycemic load - how fast the sugars are released into your bloodstream. Wanna eat fruit but don't want all the sugars? Here are a couple of fruits that we normally think of as vegetables: Tomatoes, bell peppers (all…

Yes, someone please introduce this woman to a vegetable!!! I think she's seriously in need of some artichokes and eggplants and lovely kidney beans and black-eyed peas... Hon, What you're eating isn't food - it's artificially flavored and colored FLUFF! Take that from an old lady who's done a lot of dieting. Even when I…

Very interesting article here: Alcohol, Calories and Weight http://www2.potsdam.edu/hansondj/AlcoholCaloriesAndWeight.html A little bit is good for you and may not affect your weight loss! Great news for wine and craft beer connoisseurs! Poke around there - there are several interesting articles that are pertinent. I'm a…

I have used 4-step filters like "One Step At A Time": http://www.quitsmoking.com/onestep.htm Get down to the last filter, then wean yourself off. Nicotine patches gave me horrible insomnia. Nicotine losenges didn't take away my cravings - I found that sugar free mints and sours like IceBreakers did just as well. Helps to…

I love my wine! Just getting into craft beer and especially ales these days... I think that done correctly, these beverages can enhance life, not the reading on the scale!

I have the smart phone app... I have no excuse! Also have it on my iPad...

Thank you! I really hadn't thought about those sore muscles holding fluid. I knew they held lactic acid - and I've always been prone to very sore muscles! I am feeling a little puffy, tho... Maybe next week will be better... Cheers, :drinker: Tracy

YES - by a weight loss specialist. Thyroid is borderline.

Believe me, I feel your pain! Hang in there... sooner or later the math will catch up with the metabolism (calories in < calories out = weight loss) and you'll be successful if you stay balanced. Don't give up!

I have only one more thing to say here... Please, folks, don't make judgments until you have at least looked at someone's history (I'm OLD and hardly a neophyte in weight loss or exercising - it's in my profile) and diary (never once have I eaten 1000 calories or less in the whole WEEK I've been signed up here). I've made…

Look at my diary - I'm eating back the exercise calories. My diet is very healthy - I live with and cook for a diabetic. And having previously lost more than 100 pounds, I do know I won't lose it overnight. I was really hoping that hitting the aerobics hard would jump start my metabolism which has been insulted of late. I…
-
Just a note - I did say that I do eat back most of the exercise calories but I also try to stay under my calorie goal *adjusted for exercise*. One thing I did not realize, though, is that there is a calorie adjustment for weight training - I do that every other day. Not trying to make excuses, but I do enjoy wine with…
