I got rid of mine - it was my way of saying "I WONT be this size again". But I dont throw any clothes away unless they are truly gargabe (ripped, torn, stained). I either leave them at a clothing donation pickup or take them to Goodwill.

Excellent idea about the timer, people think they will just jump in the PC for a quick minute to check email and dont realize they ended up surfing around or on FB for 30minutes or an even an hour.
