  • What I call "grocery store" chocolate - regular chocolate like hershey's. If I'm going to eat chocolate, I'm going to get the good stuff. Godiva, or Lindt. I don't bother with the 'grocery store' brands (and yes, i know godiva is sold in grocery stores now. But I don't buy it there).
  • I wouldn't worry about it, especially if you are going over on protein... Are you using MFP suggested proportions of carbs/fats/protein? I changed it, because I prefer to get more protein in, and I think MFP default of 20% (I think) is low, IMO
  • If you're woozy, light-headed, etc - then yeah, i would eat more. maybe eat an extra couple hundred calories of high quality protein?
  • I think there are three options that the logic in MFP will recognize. You are under your goal, exactly at your goal, or over your goal. You could be below your goal by 10 calories, and to me, that's something to "like". It also depends on how you have myfitnesspal set up. Even though i'm trying to lose weight, i have my…
  • I drink about 64 oz of water a day at least, more if I'm running or it's hot out. I also have a diet soda or two depending on if I need the caffeine (I don't drink coffee, and yeah, i know it's bad for me blah blah blah whatever).
  • I haven't had a blizzard since I was a kid. That was, I guess, 30-something years ago. I liked them and all, but I guess when I have a craving for ice cream, which isn't often, I usually go for Ben and Jerry's...
  • i think it's actually fructose, not sucrose, in an apple.

  • Just a thought - but maybe it has more to do with the concentration of sugar in the food, or the fact that there IS fiber in the apple to help slow things down as far as how fast it gets absorbed? I don't know. I don't know if I believe sugar is a physical addiction or psychological one, but I do recognize that my body…

  • I just bought a wifi scale and I weigh myself daily - so it uploads my weight automatically to myfitnesspal because I have my accounts linked. It's pretty neat. I find I stay on track better if I weigh daily, even when I have those annoying fluctuations where I know should have lost weight because I had a calorie deficit…
  • Jason's Deli. I get the tortilla soup - just 317 calories. The vegetable soup is only 160 calories for a bowl. You can add a salad and still be under 500 calories....
  • I thinking working out is important, not just for losing weight, but for your overall cardiovascular health. And strength training as well, while not as much of a calorie burner as cardio, will help you reach your goals by increasing or at least maintaining muscle mass as you lose fat, and keep your metabolism higher. So,…
  • It depends on what I'm eating. I'm not going to use a food scale to figure out how many calories are in the handfuls of spinach or the exact ounces of cucumber I'm eating, but I'll use it to measure out things that are high calorie items, where my estimates can result in a big calorie surplus, like nuts, cheese, etc. I…
  • I used to have one, but it's a pain in the *kitten* to wear on your arm - bulky, can't wear short sleeves because you have an unsightly device on it, etc. I did like how it monitored everything. I have a fitbit and it doesn't accurately give a calorie burn for things like cycling that aren't actual 'steps'. Bodymedia needs…
  • Yes, this is true. But the formulas for determining calorie burn in myfitnesspal do not take into account body fat percentage, so it's all going to be an estimate anyway.
  • I cycle alot, and IMO, that is way more dangerous than CF. People get killed ALL THE TIME cycling - hit by cars. I did the MS150 in texas last year, and there were 2 or 3 instances of bad bicycle wrecks that required back braces and an ambulance. The thing about crossfit is that your safety is entirely up to you. You…
  • I'm working on losing weight, but I'll do a protein shake after crossfit (which usually ends up being my breakfast) and if I don't have time to make something for lunch, I'll substitute a protein shake then as well. I use Progenix Recovery or More Muscle, and I'll mix it with unsweetened coconut milk or almond milk, and I…
  • I usually just take it and throw it away when nobody is looking. If they ask why I'm not eating it right away, I say I'm saving it for after lunch or for later. Little white lies, nobodies feelings get hurt, no biggie.
  • I think they are important for calorie dense foods, where eye-balling it can mean a difference of 100 calories or more. Like Cheese, for example. Or nuts. But for things like vegetables, where if I'm off an ounce or two, it's not a big deal, I don't bother.
  • Do you also eat dinner late? I do crossfit at 5:00 am, and I've found that if, for whatever reason, I ate late the night before, then I get close to puke-point during my workout. It's unavoidable, sometimes, because I run after work, and don't get home/ready to eat dinner until 8 pm.
  • i agree. It took a long time before anyone said anything to me. I think, for people that see you everyday, the change in your appearance from day to day isn't noticeable. You look the same day 1 as you do day 2, you look the same day 2 as you do day 3, and so forth, so the change is so subtle you don't really notice it. On…
  • Also - it's not necessarily the laws of thermodynamics, it's the law of conservation of energy. Energy is conserved. So, for any system (our body for example), The amount of energy we take in (by eating) is equal to the amount of energy we expend (through our TDEE) plus the amount of energy we store (as fat). Period. And…
  • Right - it's more like 3 topics. 1) The emphasis on the word 'theory' to imply that the laws of thermodynamics as applied to weight loss is 'just a theory' 2) The kind of calories make a difference 3) a calorie is a calorie. Bottom line is - a calorie is a calorie. If you could somehow find a way to 100% accurately measure…
  • You're trying to be exact with numbers that are anything but exact. First, you'd have to trust that your daily calorie expenditure is correct. It's also an estimate. Even if you wear a fitbit, or heart rate monitor, it's all estimates. Then, you'd have to trust that your 15% overestimating for the calories you ate is…
  • Track both. Up your protein and healthy fats, reduce carbs, and still keep a calorie deficit to ensure you lose weight
  • I use progenex recovery Belgium chocolate. It's really good. I used to mix it with water, now I use coconut milk, get some of those MCFA, and sometimes I'll throw in a tablespoon of chia seeds and flax oil to boost my omegas while I'm at it. Tastes pretty good...
  • it's probably good for the gym (business, revenue), but I prefer the smaller classes. The box I go to has proably 15 or so going to evening classes, but the 5am class is still pretty small, so I go in the mornings.
  • don't let yourself get intimidated by what others can do that you can't. Just look forward to the day when you can do them, too and keep working at it.
  • I don't like the whole 'net' calories thing. What I do is set it so that my goal is to maintain my weight, and then at the end of the day, I just look at the number for "Calories remaining". The "Calories remaining" number is my deficit, and I shoot for that to be 1000 (which is equivalent to 2 lb loss per week).
  • See, I'm the opposite. I have no willpower, EXCEPT when I go cold turkey. Once I eat a little, I don't have the willpower to stop at 'just a little'. But if I don't have any, then I find it easier to do without. I also don't keep any of my 'trigger foods', that I can't stop eating after one serving, in the house at all.…
  • If the 250 calories worth of salad dressing is a processed dressing with added sugar, bad fats, etc, then I would call it junk food. If it's a salad dressing made with healthy oils (olive oil, grapeseed oil, etc), then no, it's not junk food
