  • I'm pretty sure it's inaccurate logging. Often I have to pick substitute items out of the MFP fod database to approximate what I actually ate. Yes, of course. If you watch the video, that is discussed. There are many, many genes that are thought to probably play a role that are not yet understood. Even the ones that are…
  • Atkins and similar low-carb diets work by cutting out foods heavy in carbohydrates you are also cutting out a lot of highly palatable, calorie-dense foods. This makes it harder to overeat until you find highly palatable, calorie-dense substitutes. :) Studies have shown in controlled environments that there was no…
  • The 500 calories a day is also the difference between 2 pounds a week and 1 pound a week. Since I only hit 1 pound a week anyway, that extra 500 calories would probably just put me into maintenance. Anyway, it turns out, from the video I posted, it's not the caloric intake that leads to the feeling hungry and cold. It's…
  • Which is why, long term, most attempts at weight loss fail.
  • No I know that this was not directed at you. One of the common weight loss themes of late is the idea that eating a low-carb diet is itself somehow conducive to weight loss. This has contributed to this idea that "sugar" is somehow "bad". The slide indicates that in terms of weight loss, a calorie is a calorie is a…
  • At 50:58 is a very powerful slide. The guy has shown through experimentation that changing the same number of calories from 10% fat to 70% fat made no difference in body weight. This explains why there is this constant fight on these forums between the people who constantly harp that "a calorie is a calorie is a calorie"…
  • Holy crap!!!!!! Slide at 50 minutes for possible dietary suggestions (with admonition to "use whatever works"): * Low glycemic diets may reduce appetite * Low calorie density foods enhance satiety * Less palatable foods reduce caloric intake Man!!! This is just what people like me have been saying!!!! This has twisted into…
  • Answer is at about 49 minutes: "We don't know." They have demonstrated (he talks about this just prior) that if you inject leptin back into the system to bring it up just to the pre-weight loss levels all of the symptoms of the weight loss are negated. Satiety is restored, metabolic function is restored. Still watching.
  • Wow. I'm about 45 minutes through the video. This is really amazing stuff to me. The video is from 2004. I had heard rumblings of what this guy is talking about before - probably from this guy's presentation(s). I'm not versed in this science, but from what I am following, what he is saying is that your body requires a…
  • Yes, this has been known for the 30 years I have been trying to lose weight. Also, very interesting point at the 35 minute mark in this video: http://videocast.nih.gov/summary.asp?live=2993&bhcp=1 The symptoms he mentions match mine exactly. It was such a relief to see affirmation after hearing everyone tell me I'm wrong!
  • I entered "Desk job with little exercise", as that is me. I work at a desk job, I come home and play on the computer until dinner and bed time. Sometimes I putter around in the workshop, but nothing strenuous.
  • MFP http://www.myfitnesspal.com TDEE: 2740 Recommended deficit to achieve 2 pounds per week: 1050 Recommended daily intake: 1690 Sarauk2sf http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/819055-setting-your-calorie-and-macro-targets Based on a 30 pound weight loss over 219 days consuming on average 1800 calories per day: TDEE:…
  • There were people up-thread saying I was not eating enough calories at the 1690 that MFP was recommending. But the link the person recommended ended up within 24 calories of the same target number. So it looks like 1700 calories is the correct target.
  • Here's a pro tip: If your profile pictures are public, it will cut down on the friend requests from creepers that just want to see your pictures.
  • From your link: "For example, say I lost 8lb over a 10 week period while eating an average of 2,000 calories a day. My TDEE would be: 2,000 x 7 days x 10 weeks (140,000) which represents the total calories consumed over the 10 week period plus 8 x 3,500 (28,000) which represents my weight loss expressed as a deficit using…
  • From your link: "SETTING CALORIE TARGETS: There are two basic ways to do this: by using the targets provided by MFP after inputting your information or by calculating your TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) and taking a cut off your TDEE, assuming weight loss is the goal. " That's what I did.
  • Your scooby calculator puts me at 2750, which is within 50 calories of the "rule of thumb". I have no doubt that anyone can lose weight eating any amount of calories a day. But if you aren't eating your way to a deficit you have to exercise your way to one.
  • Everything is a choice. Everything is a cost/benefit analysis. It's just that frequently the benefit of immediate pleasure outweighs the distance pleasure of being thin. I started my diet in June of 2013. I did that for about 3 months until I felt like I had a handle on eating, and then I joined a gym. I believe on my…
  • All of this is completely rational and correct. I have told people the same thing myself - the thing about "blowing it" is that if you blow it typically even if you "blow it" back up to maintenance and get back on the horse again no big harm is done. I simply have lacked the willpower to get back on the horse since October…
  • Even if this were true, I don't believe anyone can help you with this kind of thing.
  • Thanks, levitateme! :) I have gone back and logged my last 3 days as best I remember.
  • I disagree with this. You don't have to be suffering from some hidden need to become addicted to something. Addiction is simply a changing of the brain circuity in response to pleasurable stimulii such that you brain wants the stimulii. You can do this to yourself even if you are perfectly happy with your life. You don't…
  • I doubt your numbers. If eating 1700 a day only netted 1 pound of loss per week, then eating 2675 would net me much less weight loss. I really don't think it's anything that dramatic. It's just an issue of "if it feels good do it". Eating is pleasurable and easy. Like any pleasurable activity done to excess, it has…
  • I don't believe any professional can give you willpower. You've got to come up with it on your own. Over 90% of the people who try to lose weight don't have the willpower to do it long term.
  • You must be doing a lot of exercise then.
  • That's how I succeeded over the first 5 months. Halloween rolled into Thanksgiving rolled into Christmas and I just blew it. I've gained back 21 of the 30 pound I lost. I'm just waiting for an effective appetite suppressant to finally come along.
  • Any addict chooses to indulge. And gambling addicts can live without gambling. What's your point? You must have missed this:
  • This is why I think a lot of people in these forums don't understand or believe in the idea of food addiction. The idea of eating for pleasure, and trying to maximize the pleasure by maximizing the eating, simply does not compute for them. You see when I go to the store and break down and buy candy I'm going to make it the…
  • I was following the MFP guidelines for a target of 2-pounds per week. Over 213 days I lost 30 pounds, or an average of 1 pound per week. This seems reasonable to me. I think if I ate much more than that I would be at maintenance.
  • I only lost one pound per week over 213 days. If I upped my calories this would be even less and even less worth the effort.
