The main reason people lose weight on low-carb diets is because they are cutting out a large source of calorie-dense food from their usual diets. Also, a diet rich in protein can mitigate hunger feelings making it easier to stick to a calorie deficit.

All of this is may be so, but has nothing to do with the myth that fat people can go into "starvation mode" and stop losing weight. If you have more than 20% body fat (probably less than that, but I'll go with it conservatively) and you eat a calorie deficit, you will lose weight. Period. You must. End of story. This has…

GAH!!!!!!! Those people were down to single digit body fat percentages! Most of the people around here being told to "Eat! You are in starvation mode!" are fat! Basically, if you are over 20% body fat, you can't be in starvation mode and any calorie deficit will result in weight loss! Now, this is only talking about weight…

How long have you been dieting? For me, the first 6 weeks were insane - I thought about food all the time and was hungry all the time. I would go to bed early some nights to avoid thinking about food. Now I still think about food all the time but it's controllable. Eating more protein can mitigate hunger.

You can't fight biology, hun. Physical attraction is a big, big deal for most men and if you've got rolls that makes it look like you have three sets of breasts under your shirt that's going to be a turn-off for a lot of men. Not all, but a lot. That's why we are here.

I think you are confusing "eat everything in moderation" with "eat anything you want". Any diet that says you can "eat anything you want" is pretty much lying. If you don't maintain a calorie deficit, you aren't going to lose weight. Now there are some foods that you can eat a LOT of and not get a lot of calories. Celery,…

http://www.aworkoutroutine.com/starvation-mode/ Starvation mode is largely a myth, unless you get down to single-digit, life-threatening body fat. That said, you can experience plateaus when dieting. I have dieted many times, and always see the same kind of thing - the first 10 pounds comes off pretty easy, and then things…

It's sad that nearly every post devolves into the Starvation Mode discussion. I wish we could get a sticky about it. Anyway, I've started diets many times in my 43 years. I have always experienced the same thing - the first 10 pounds comes off pretty easy and then you seem to stall out - the "plateau". I do not think this…

Every day. It keeps me focused and motivated. Here is what daily logging looks like:

I'd be willing to be that most of the time when people cut their "sugar" intake they are cutting sugar from calorie-dense foods and as such maintaining a better calorie deficit.

I agree with the above. Any exercise is better than no exercise. The key to weight loss is in maintaining a calorie deficit. To lose body fat, you actually don't have to do any exercise at all. You just have to eat less. Weight lifting is good because it helps maintain and build muscles so that you don't lose muscle in…

I'm assuming you are here to lose weight. You can lose weight eating Twinkies and other snack cakes: http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/11/08/twinkie.diet.professor/index.html So sugar is not inherently bad for most people. The key to weight loss is maintaining a calorie deficit. For good health, you will want to eat a…

This is me! I'm fat. I weigh 262.5 pounds and 36% body fat. I would be happy with being 200 pounds even if I wasn't strong. My primary goal is weight loss. But I have started lifting at the gym because I hope that the increased muscle mass will encourage increased metabolism and fat loss. But I don't really give a flip…

This! There are so many people who cannot fathom the idea of food being a source of pleasure. I have eliminated, or rather substituted certain foods for most of the meals I eat during the weak. My problem is that once I allow myself to indulge in some pleasurable food, I will eat until satisfied. So it is best just not to…

Watch out I'm going to start flipping through your pictures again! :)

I'm assuming since you have been to doctors that there is nothing medically wrong with you, like a thyroid problem. This would show up in a blood test, which I'm assuming you had. If you are healthy and you are gaining weight, it's because you are eating a calorie surplus. It's as simple as that. The very first thing you…

I'm right there with you. I've spent my whole life eating food mostly as a source of pleasure and satisfaction and with virtually no regard to health. When you build a lifetime of behavioral habit revolving around food, it is very hard to break the habit. I've been at this since April 19th. I'm down 27 pounds. For me, the…

I don't think there is anything wrong with turning your foods into a puree or juice if you want to. I just don't think there are any special health benefits to doing it, and certainly nothing magical with regards to weight loss. In the end, you can eat your calories or drink them, but you'll need a deficit if you want to…

There is only one way to lose weight, and that is to maintain a calorie deficit. To lose 2 pounds a week, which is about the most you can do, you will need a daily caloric deficit of about 1000 calories. It doesn't matter if you are drinking juice or not. There's nothing "cleansing" about drinking juice.

The study has been posted here before - there is no evidence that people on low-glycemic-index diets lose any more weight than those not. So there is nothing magical about a low-carb diet that leads to weight loss. The key to weight loss is maintaining a calorie deficit. You can do this eating nothing but carbs if you…

I turn 43 next week! Been sustaining this diet for the longest ever - 5 months now. Down 26 pounds! Always looking for fellow fitties my age!

For most people with excess body fat, starvation mode is a myth: http://www.aworkoutroutine.com/starvation-mode/ Now does your body slow down a bit once it catches on to a reduced calorie diet? I think so. Every time I've dieted I've noticed a decline in energy about 1 week into a diet, and while I can usually lose the…

There have been studies on this and as I recall they show that more attractive people tend to make more money than ugly people. So I think it's pretty plain that the more attractive you are you will probably have nicer social interactions overall.

I understand completely. I am the same way.

Wow I want to do this!
-
The whole reason why most people cut out items they enjoy or label certain foods as "good" or "bad" is to learn healthier habits towards food.
-
That is a fantastic insight!

True! To avoid binge eating first of all you need to stay focused. Tracking your food here helps with that. To avoid eating for pleasure, cut out the foods that you find irresistible to eat.

Well, a lot of professionals seem to agree with you and some disagree. Both gambling and binge eating are now listed in the DSM-V, with gambling being listed as an addiction while binge eating is a disorder. Yes, there does appear to be still controversy on exactly what constitutes an addiction and what does not. It…
