Oddly I had the idea of butter in coffee before I'd even heard of that bulletproof site. I actually prefer the butter coffee to coconut oil coffee.

Put me in the "fudging the answer" group. I have butter and cream and feel guilty about it.

Depends on your metabolism. Specifically, probably, how damaged your beta cells are. If I ate ice cream every day, calorie deficit or not I probably wouldn't lose weight. Genetics and years of obesity got me there. You have nice friendly genes and an intact metabolism, so for you, calories are calories. My mitochondria beg…

I have no idea what this means.

The kidney stones thing is interesting. A lot of Atkins dieters deny it, but I'm prepared to believe that an increase in animal protein in the diet could cause them in susceptible people. Do kidney stones run in the family or do you have kidney damage that you're aware of? They are likely to be uric acid stones, and the…

If you go to "Groups" on here you can do a search. There's a Low Carber Daily Forum group, a Keto group, and a la via low carb group. You might also get some good tips in the Paleo/Primal group (although not strictly low carb).

Yes, I had this for about a week, then I had vivid dreams (about carbs, usually), and now I sleep really well almost all the time. From what I've read this pattern is quite common. I don't know for sure, but I personally lump the insomnia in with "carb flu" or "carb withdrawal" symptoms. Coconut oil can cause it too I…

Brussel sprouts do it for me! Also flaxmeal. EDIT: do be careful supplementing with iron. You're right that it can cause constipation, but there are other potential side-effects too if you have too much. As a general rule getting it from food would be better, bott for absorption and your health!

All of which may be true, but this thread is about low carb diets, not high protein diets.

Yes, you can see how much I've lost in my ticker below, that's since June 2011. The main benefit however has been emotional; I feel better in myself than I have in years and years. Can't say for certain what the cause of that is- low sugar, low processed foods, more fat, a combination of those things- I just don't know.…

I'm in the UK, so products available might be different for you, but I'd be stuck if I didn't snack on peperami sticks, Mini Babybel cheeses, macadamia nuts (I'm pretty sure you can find those!), and if I want something sweet I make some weird cream + cocoa powder concoction with sweetener, although I want to phase…

Ha ha ha I was just saying to my OH today my shoes are loose! My feet have definitely gotten smaller. I was mad about it- I never wanted skinny feet! How come I have skinny feet and a huge belly? I seem to be losing weight from either end and nothing in the middle! Grrrr.

I guess it will depend on a person's height and frame, how much they want to eat at a certain weight. At the moment I'm around 1700kcal, down from 2000 when I was 30lb heavier. If you're losing weight, don't worry about the calories. If you stop losing weight, you can try lowering them, or take up a new or different kind…

I really relate to all of your post- I'm a recovering carb addict too! But this bit especially, because I had half a chocolate dessert thing on Valentine's night. It didn't trigger any cravings, but I now weigh several pounds more than I did last weekend. There's just no wiggle room for me, I have to be 100%. Too many…

It's almost impossible to do induction-level Atkins with processed foods because of added sugar, wheat and starches in everything (in other words, lack of processed foods is a by-product rather than a specification of the diet). Many Atkins dieters also say that sweeteners or dairy stall their weight loss, and therefore…

Oh dear, sounds like you've had a terrible time, I'm sorry. I expect this way of eating will help your hormones sort themselves out more quickly and hopefully make things easier to bear- I know I'm happier eating this way. The cravings thing is interesting. I get terrible carb cravings the week before my period, and I…

A lot of people lose more slowly the second time round, although I'm not sure that the reason is well-understood. As for stalling during induction, well let's start with the major but more unlikely reasons! There's a theory that some people are more "metabolically damaged" than others- more insulin resistant. This is more…

Actually I don't think my experience IS that bizarre. There is some research that links vegetarian diets with depression, and plenty of ex-veg*ns (particularly ex-vegans) who anecdotally report a resurgence in health with a return to an omnivorous diet. Yeah, I did eat junk sometimes, but in fairness my diet over 15 veggie…

I deal with it by careful honing my already advanced ability to completely ignore mess. Then, I invite people to the house so I HAVE to clean up. Then I go back to ignoring it again.
-
It's a revelation. After 15 years as a fat, depressed vegetarian I feel like I am finally ME. Sometimes I think about it and it's sooo obvious I want to scream. Stop eating junk. Eat real food. Duhhhhh, younger me.....DUHHHHH.
-
As far as I'm concerned, 15 years meat-free made me fat, depressed, and dumber. The improvement after eating meat again is just staggering. I wish I were the only one to say it, I wish I was some freakish one-off, but so many ex-veggies report feeling better after eating meat that I have to believe there's something in it.…

Aww man I'm so hungry now! These all look delicious! PS 106lb lost?? WOW! Congratulations.

Really inspiring stuff! Can't wait till I post my own before and after!

I have them, the pre-packaged ones (not the powder you mix at home), and don't seem to have a problem. I'd say they're not ideal, I mean they're chock-full of colourings, flavourings etc which your body can do without. Good for emergencies only! The only way to test if they're affecting you is to stop having them for a…

My turning point on the marg/butter issue was seeing how margarine is made. Chemically extracted oil, bleached, deodorized and then dyed yellow. Yuk. Definitely butter for me. I don't know about the safety of sweeteners, what I've read seems inconclusive. Sugar's just empty calories. If I could I would avoid both, but I…

Damn you're hot. I'm not surprised you found love! Great job.

Hi Kelly! I've taken a look at your diary, I think you're doing pretty well! There are a couple of possible culprits for your stall- the first thing I notice is that your calorie count is quite low in most cases (apart from one day). When I first started low carb I set my limit at 1700kcal a day and went over that so much…

Cut down on refined carbohydrate- flour and sugar. Try to get your carbs from mainly vegetables and some fruit, not bread and pasta.
-
Logged my food for the first time in ages and came in around 30g/CHO. So lower than I thought!

Yes! Check out the Daily Low Carb group on here, there are lots of us!
