  • With everyone around me losing control over food indulgences during the lockdown, I'm finding it reassuring to be managing what I'm eating. It has been really hard working at home and getting out for daily exercise. I'd be interested to know how others are managing right now.
  • This is so true. Sometimes I look down at my lap when driving in my car and I can still remember when my tummy grazed the steering wheel. In those moments I smile to myself and remember how different my body used to be. You are so right it is important to remember why it is so much easier and pleasant to do everyday things…
  • Glad to see there's another vegan here. I've been vegan a while now and it has really helped with my overall wellbeing and weight maintenance. However the body does indeed go through a period of intestinal adjustment. Don't worry it does settle down after a while.
  • Agree. I've been in more or less maintenance for a year. When I first got to my current weight I bought some very odd outfits. either blowsy and big like I used to wear or silly tight and fitted. Neither style really suits me. It has taken a while but I'm finally settling into a style that I like and suits me. Oh and I…
  • That the online calculators for recommended maintenance calories are all too high for me. I need to consume at least 200 cals less than the recommendations on a daily basis. I think this is due to a certain amount of leniency in my calorie recording and the fact that I have a free day once a week where I'm very probably…
  • I was discussing this with.a really good, and always slim, friend. And she remarked that I seemed much more outgoing, confident and positive these days. While she did not deny people do treat you better if you're not obese, there's also the confidence factor. Having said that, l know people, especially men, are more…
  • I am so pleased to have found this thread. This is very interesting and reassuring. I really don't mind being squishy or jiggly. Frankly I seem to be both. But after 2.5 years my body does seem to be stabilising itself. I don't have the under-skin fat lumps any more but my skin is loose and lumpy. However I'm just so much…
  • No one told me how much more aware I would be of my own body and health. I would go so far as to say I've become a bit of a hypercondriac. On the one hand I can no longer put down to obesity every ache and pain. On the other hand I am so much more observant of my own physical shape, sensations, lumps and bumps. I used to…
  • I too experience this. It can be a real battle. If I just can't shake the feeling, I usually allow myself a piece of fruit, which is sweet and satisfying. There was a time of course when there was no way an apple would stave off my hunger, but that and a cup of hot tea miraculously does the trick these days.
  • I went through a phase of falling over all the time. It would happen when going down stairs quickly or starting off on a run for the train. I was starting to get worried. But it has completely settled down now and my balance had become better than it ever was. I am now constantly amazed at how little space I need to…
  • This. I have also noticed a blanket goes a lot further in covering me up. Good thing because of the 'always feeling cold' phenomenon.
  • This. And airplane seatbelts get longer. And my car seat is further back.
  • I have discovered that I can even wear high(ish) heels. It used to be so uncomfortable even with the slightest heel and I only owed flats. Now I can wear a mid-heel all day and not suffer--well at least not too much.
  • This. I can easily pass between parked cars that I thought too narrow. And in restaurants, I surprise myself when I can squeeze through the gap between tables or the behind chairs without jostling other diners.
  • Same here. I fell backwards in an exercise class a few days ago. Luckily I landed on the fullest part of my bottom. Unfortunately my bottom is no longer very padded and boy did it hurt. No permanent damage but I can remember being a bit like a padded ball. However there used to be sooo much more heft going down. I still…
  • This has been said before, but I am always amazed at how my body perception changes from day-to-day. Some days I feel light as air and slim. Other days I feel and look heavy to myself. I think I tend to compare myself to other slim people now, rather than to other overweight people (as I used to). I still think of myself…
  • Same here. I've recently found myself getting slightly merry on tiny quantities of Wine. Never was a big drinker, but I never seemed to ever feel drunk. It's quite odd.
  • This made me laugh out loud because it happens to me too. Sometimes in a quiet yoga class. Very disconcerting.
  • Swimming pool observations - I hadn't been swimming since before losing over 120 pounds. This summer I got up the nerve to give it another go. Here are some thing I discovered. I no longer float. I used to love being boyant but now I have to kick lightly to stay afloat. Bathing suits can be too big and flap around if you…
  • I had a similar strange occurrence. I was having very odd stomach cramps. I went to the doctor to get myself all checked out and I am in excellent health and I have never felt better. However, according to my doctor, it turns out that it is not uncommon for people who lose vast amounts of weight (in my case over…
  • When I was sooo much heavier, I got my work to buy me an expensive chair so that I had more room and was more solidly built. Now I float in that chair and it feels like a throne. A lovely feeling. I live in a large metropolitan city and I no longer get that sour look from other passengers on the…
  • No one told me that my bra would fit flat across my back and around my sides. I just discovered this morning that I no longer have rolls of fat spilling out above and below my properly-fitting bra. So much more comfortable.
  • I too find it uncomfortable to be witness to these occasional comments and realise that in the past I had probably been spoken about in that way too and that fatism really does occur sometimes.
  • How restless I feel all the time, but especially sitting at my desk at work. I am constantly looking for excuses to get up and move around. It used to be that I would find I had been imobile for hours at a time. Now I have so much energy it is harder to remain desk-bound. The same seems to be true for TV watching, which I…
  • I would recommend you bite the bullet and get on the scale. When I started out, I spend the first months afraid to know how bad things really were--and it was pretty horrible. I had a good friend who gave me the good advice to get it over and done with and I was glad I did. After the initial shock, the scale will tell you…
  • I weigh in once a week, on Saturday at the same time. For me, any more than that my compulsive nature would cause me start to obsess too much.
  • This is very interesting stuff. I certainly have noticed a marked break in a vicious cycle of poor sleep and bad eating habits. Being much slimmer has improved my quality of sleep, which in turn makes me turn less to food for comfort. I actually find going to bed without indigestion and back pain makes turning in…
  • I too had that terrible 300 pound revelation. I had been avoiding weighing myself for years. I started MFP almost on a whim but the time was right and I am down 62 pounds. I believe the time is right for you too. Like Dianakop72 I didn't force myself to exercise heavily in the first five months, but there comes a time when…
  • I am coming up to halfway to my goal. I find I am walking much taller and faster. I no longer have trouble keeping up with others when walking in groups--no longer suffering the indignity of puffing and wheezing and falling behind. In fact I can now lead the pack. Aside from the exercise I am doing, I get real pleasure in…
