By way of an "update", there has been quite of bit of work going on behind the scenes on updating and improving the Group "Announcements" (aka "FAQs") section for our Group.

Between the holidays and the fact that it's a much more involved task than many of us might have anticipated, and that each of us actually have "lives" outside the group that demand our time and attention, what we originally had hoped would be a "quick and dirty" rewrite, is proving to be more time consuming than any of us imagined.

As a group though, the mods are in total agreement that it's much more important that we do it "right" than it is that we do it "quickly".

One component of the final product will be a comprehensive listing of "low carb" resources (books, videos, external websites, etc) aimed not only at "newbies" but also "old hands". A "one stop" repository for all those things you've "heard about" but forgot to bookmark and now can't find the link (haven't we all?).

Think of it as our "library", reference resource, whatever.

Our intent is to have individual listings (sub topics) for each type of resource (books, videos, etc), which might then be further organized by sub-sub, topic (books>types of LC diets>atkins/paleo/primal/etc) to make a "search" easier for members to "drill down" through to find what they are looking for (since MFP groups have no "search" function).

To start organizing and collecting suggested references we could REALLY use your help and input. In addition, we believe that this will be "your" list (all of ours), and it's important to us that we involve as many members of the group in the process as is possible.

It's also important that we cover as much of the LC spectrum as possible in order to offer exposure to all of the possible alternatives any of our members or guests might be interested in.

Here's how you can assist the effort.
First, there will be SEPARATE threads for each topic (books, videos, etc). PLEASE post your contributions ONLY to the appropriate thread (books on "books", videos on "videos", etc. Doing so will make it MUCH easier for us to collate the suggestions and will also provide individual "dedicated" threads for each type that group members (and "newbies") can refer to in the meantime until the "final version" is ready for prime time. It will also be the thread(s) that members can continue to add new suggestions to as time goes on keeping it current and up to date.
Post the title and author of the book (or video on the "video" thread
Post the hyperlink to the book you are suggesting
Add a short (1 or 2 sentence) "comment/review" describing why you are rec-ing it
Suggest a subcategory that you think it would best fit under (i.e. an "atkins" book under "atkins diet")

For books, if a "kindle" (e-book) version is available, please post the link to that since it is the most economical and preferred source for most and would also provide those who prefer a "hard copy" to obtain one if that is their preference. If no kindle link is available however that does NOT mean it can't be included on the list (just provide a link to wherever it is available).

THANKS in advance for your help and your contributions - they will be a BIG HELP and greatly accelerate the process.

Remember, this thread is the "BOOKS" thread, so please post ONLY references to BOOKS here - there will be a separate thread(s) set up for VIDEOS and other main topics, so please post them there.

So, to get the ball rolling, here's an example posting: (you might want to copy/paste these four and replace the items with your own, it will keep the order and consistency)

1) "Art and Science of Low Carb" - Phinney and Volek
2) http://tinyurl.com/o85dnaj
3) Arguably the most comprehensive book on the LCHF lifestyle ever written. Lots of "science" but presented in a "understandable" way - a "must read".
4) List under "LCHF - general"

I am not sure what the "topics" will be, but I tried to sort these into areas that they would best fit. Obviously, the suggested topics may not actually exist, and they would be moved to the best one.

    1) Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It by Gary Taubes
    2) http://tinyurl.com/q2ssvzy
    3) A pretty easy to read book for understanding how Low Carb is different from other diets and how it works.
    4) List under "LCHF - General"

    1) Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes
    2) http://tinyurl.com/qcjuc4v
    3) This is similar in content to Why We Get Fat, but much more detailed. This is a harder read, but may be worth it for manye people.
    4) List under "LCHF - Advanced [maybe Intermediate]"

    {Repeat from above with full title to distinguish from the next book}
    1) The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living by Jeff S. Volek & Stephen Phinney
    2) http://tinyurl.com/o85dnaj
    3) Arguably the most comprehensive book on the LCHF lifestyle ever written. Lots of "science" but presented in a "understandable" way - a "must read".
    4) List under "LCHF - General"

    1) The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance by Jeff S. Volek & Stephen Phinney
    2) http://tinyurl.com/ohxkb4q
    3) While the Living book is for most people, this book is aimed at those who want to push their athletic performance while eating low carb.
    4) List under "LCHF - Advanced [maybe Intermediate]"

    1) The Ketogenic Diet: A Complete Guide for the Dieter & the Practitioner by Lyle McDonald
    2) {no kindle, paperback is outrageous, google it for an online version}
    3) This is a very good introduction to Keto. Now, Lyle doesn't necessarily see eye to eye with a lot of people (he doesn't endorse long term keto, for example) but this book is an excellent resource for those starting out and Lyle does know his stuff.
    4) List under "LCHF - General"

    1) Death by Food Pyramid by Denise Minger
    2) http://tinyurl.com/lsdzx7f
    3) This is not specifically a low-carb book. It's more about how the design of the food pyramid has little to do with health or science. It is a very interesting read for understanding how we ended up where we are. She endorses finding what style of eating works best for your specific body, not one plan for everyone.
    4) List under "General Low Carb Information"

    1) The Fat of the Land: Not by Bread Alone by Vilhjalmur Stefansson
    2) http://tinyurl.com/lt5kuuv
    3) You can only find this online. The above link is where I got my copy. This book tells the story of Stefansson, who lived for many years with the Eskimo. It also covers a year long experiment where he, and another man, lived solely on meat. It's a pretty interesting book, although its conclusions may not be for everyone.
    4) List under "LCHF - Advanced"

    1) Principia Ketogenica: Compendium Of Science Literature On The Benefits Of Low Carbohydrate And Ketogenic Diets by A Simmonds
    2) http://tinyurl.com/n54r6bq
    3) This is a compendium of research on Low Carb. If you're interested in reviewing the actual science for yourself, this would be the place to start.

The Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson
http://www.amazon.com/The-Primal-Blueprint-Reprogram-effortless/dp/0982207786 (available in Kindle, Paperback, and Hardcover); also available in audiobook form
Not marketed as "low carb," but it's very much LCHF-leaning. This is a great book for pretty much anyone and provides a great framework for going low carb without relying on artificial sweeteners and Atkins bars. It's also great for people who seem to believe that Paleo and Low Carb are mutually exclusive.
List under "Dietary Frameworks" and/or "Low Carb Paleo"

    Keto Clarity by Jimmy Moore
    http://www.amazon.com/Keto-Clarity-Definitive-Benefits-Low-Carb/dp/1628600071/ref=asap_B002BMKYOW?ie=UTF8 (Kindle, Hardcover, or audible)
On my wish list, but I've heard good things about it. To my knowledge, it's a great introductory book to the ketogenic diet. A fair amount of science, and he co-wrote it with Dr. Westman, so should be fairly accurate, but written in the way Jimmy Moore writes, which is a lot more approachable for most people.
List under "Ketogenic Diet" or "LCHF -- General"

    Cholesterol Clarity by Jimmy Moore
    http://www.amazon.com/Cholesterol-Clarity-What-Wrong-Numbers/dp/1936608383/ref=asap_B002BMKYOW?ie=UTF8 (Kindle, Hardcover, or audible)
Again, on my wish list, but looks compelling. Jimmy brings all the science about the misconceptions of cholesterol (both dietary and serum) and breaks it down for the layperson to better understand.
List under "LCHF -- General" or "Breaking Down the Fat Phobia"

Livin' La Vida Low Carb - My Journey From Flabby to Sensationally Skinny in One Year by Jimmy Moore
    http://www.amazon.com/Livin-Vida-Low-Carb-Journey-Sensationally/dp/1591138043/ref=la_B002BMKYOW_1_5?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1419430143&sr=1-5 (Paperback only)
Basically, Jimmy's testimonial/success story. He lost 180 lbs and dropped all prescription medications in a year, thanks to keto.

    hbkserver.tk/members/The%20Gabriel%20Method.pdf

I order the current version from Amazon but found this old version on line and read it today. It is not low carb per se because it is more about why we are fat from a mental view but no CICO view for sure. If it does not fit here just please delete this post.

    GH;

I don't see any problem at all with including it on the list, we just have to find (create) an appropriate topic for the index which is part of our "learning curve" with setting up the library.

Haven't read it (yet) but from your description, maybe "motivation"???

I would suggest though for future posters, where a (legal) PDF exists, no problem including the link to the PDF, but if there is a Kindle (ebook) link, include that as well.

Not sure, but I think Kindles (especially older models?) might not be able to handle PDF's(???), so for those who wish to read on an ereader it would save them a few steps.

"The Wild Diet: Go Beyond Paleo to Burn Fat, Beat Cravings, and Drop 20 Pounds in 40 days" by Abel James
    ---
The "Wild Diet" is a variation on Paleo that allows: grass-fed dairy; recommends intermittent fasting; filling most of your plate with (organic) leafy greens and/or non-starchy veggies; bulletproof coffee; as well as a little HIIT or Tabata training; along with getting out and walking in the fresh air w/ sunshine on your face.

    1) "Never Binge Again" - by Glenn Livingston FREE KINDLE EDITION or $9.95 paperback

    3) This is a bit of mild self-hypnosis to train ourselves to easily forego the carb and suger laden foods we sometimes crave. First, a binge is even one bite of something that isn't in our food plan. His basic premise is to think of a pig within us and that our cravings belong to our PIG, not our healthy self. The only way to stop the pig from convincing us to eat what isn't in our food plan it to ignore the pig and make certain the pig suffers while we eat our food, not the pig's slop.
