Sometimes I am amazed that I have been reading Scientific American for more than 55 years but postings like this keep me going back.

Haha, that looks a lot like what I posted in the thread that linked to Ornish's op-ed a couple of weeks ago. :D

Hey Melinda, you part of this group and we just didn't know it? ;)

My husband subscribes to the Scientific American magazine. I'll keep an eye on it more closely now. ;)

A 2010 systematic review and meta-analysis of 20 studies found consumption of processed meat was associated with an increased risk of diabetes and heart disease but eating unprocessed red meat was not. A 2014 meta-analysis similarly reported much higher mortality risks associated with processed meat compared with red meat consumption and found no problems associated with white meat.

Is bacon considered processed meat? Uh oh.

I think this is the 2014 study:
    http://aje.oxfordjournals.org/content/179/3/282.long

“Processed meat” was defined as any meat preserved by smoking, salting, curing, or by the addition of chemical preservatives, such as bacon, sausages, hot dogs, salami, or ham.

    Bacon! Ahhhhhh!

The bacon I can get my hands on is woodsmoked by the butcher and then sliced.

I don't consider any bacon to be processed. It's cured, not processed. ;)
