Q4 Goals

Dorkyfaery created this thread for the 3rd quarter, and I thought it was a great idea, so here's one for the 4th quarter.

I'm in maintenance AND am an injured runner (currently thinking I may be recovered?) so I only have a few goals.

1) To not allow my weight to go over 135 during the holidays (and hopefully to not gain at all)
2) To run at least 25 miles each month... I haven't started for October yet due to recovering from a lower leg injury, but will hit the pavement again this weekend.

What are YOUR goals for the final quarter of 2014?

I wasn't able to reach all of my goals listed in the Q3 thread. I was getting a stress injury from doing the C25K program so I think my main goal is to continue shedding weight which will definitely help with those sort of injuries. I am going to incorporate more walking and not try to rush a running program.

I'll repost my blog entry that I wrote for Q4 goals. So far, so good. I'm maintaining my weight, I've done yoga 2x/week so far, and I'm playing tennis about 2x/week.

Q4 brings with it some interesting challenges. You have Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, all about a month apart. I don't want to set myself up for failure so I'm going to have some "bare minimum" goals and some "above and beyond" goals.
Starting weight for Q4 is 173.8.

    Bare Minimum
    • Maintain my weight through the end of the year.
    • Play tennis two days a week. This can include any matches through either of the leauges I'm signed up for this fall.
    • Do yoga at least one day per week.
    • Eat at or below maintenance most days.

    Above and Beyond Goals
    • Get below 170 by the end of the year (169.9, loss of 3.9 pounds).
    • Play tennis two days a week in addition to any matches.
    • Do yoga 2-3 days per week.
    • Eat below maintenance most days

For the eating below maintenance, I have MFP set to a .5lb/week loss, so that means that I could go over my calories by 200-250 calories per day and still be meeting my bare minimum goal. It's a mind game, really. I find it easier to stay within range if I'm aiming for a lower target. My tendency is to go over, so I keep the max lower. If that makes sense.

So the quarter is going pretty well. I'm doing a decent job on my "bare minimum" goals.
    • I've been bouncing around between 172.6 and 174, which means I'm maintaining my weight.
    • On average, I've been playing tennis a bit more than two days a week, but I expect that to taper as my flex league is winding down and it is getting frickin' COLD outside.
    • Since I've been playing more tennis, yoga has suffered. Looking to get a bit more consistent with that in the next two weeks or so.
    • On a daily basis my calories are all over the place, but on average I'm eating at maintenance or the tiniest bit below, so that's good.

I've signed up for a "Maintain Don't Gain" challenge at work, which started today. The goal is not to gain more than two pounds between today and 5 January. There's also weekly challenges. I think the most difficult one for me will be on the week of 15 December - avoid alcoholic beverages. I may not even try, but I might give it a go. We shall see.

If you want to do the challenge with me, it would be cool to have some folks along! The weekly challenge for the week of 17 November is "don't eat anything after 7:30 p.m." but I would make that more flexible to say, "don't snack after dinner". We know it's tough in the DMV to get through rush hour for dinner at a decent hour!

    Checking in with an update...
    • I tweaked my intake and I've started slowly losing again, which is awesome. I'm now bouncing around between 170-171.6, so, awesome!
    • Tennis has tapered off as the weather has changed. Played none last week and once this week.
    • Still haven't gotten back into yoga but I have been doing body weight strength training and walk/jog intervals for exercise, along with stretches after.
    • Calories are up and down day-to-day but on average I am eating at a small deficit each week.
"Maintain Don't Gain" challenge is going well. The second week challenge was easy for me - don't eat fast or fried foods. This week's challenge has also been okay - get 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Next week will also be a breeze - pack your own lunch 3x during the week. I mostly bring my lunch to work so that should be easy enough.

I weighed in yesterday at 170.4, which is both awesome and ridiculous, considering the two days I totally sucked at eating/drinking last week. If I can lose half a pound in the next two weeks, I will meet my "above and beyond" goal to get below 170 (169.9) by the end of the year. That seems like a tall order considering I have three holiday parties this week, one next week, and then, of course, Christmas itself. Still, I'm feeling good about my progress this quarter.

Update for me: I managed to keep my weight hovering around 130 so far this quarter... not sure how much longer that's going to hold, though with all the chocolate and cookies floating around my neighborhood/house/work/EVERYWHERE!!!!

As for running 25 miles each month, I did NOT manage to do that, and probably won't manage to hit 25 miles in December. I ran 15 miles in October, 24.6 in November, and I'm not sure what December is going to look like when I'm through, but I've been slacking!!!

However, I did sign up for a half-marathon at hte end of March, so I'll be running more in the first quarter of 2015.

@dorkyfaery‌ - congrats on getting below 170. You totally rock!
