Summertime Activites and Challenges

If you're in the Eastern Hemisphere things should be heating up. Winter is (hopefully) a distant memory and the weather is nice enough to be outdoors more frequently.

I'm a big fan of paddling and am looking forward to getting out on the water. I've also done some hiking, although the bugs are pretty bad in Florida (especially ticks). I also am beginning training for a triathalon. I am moving most of my training to the mornings when it's cooler out, save for some short after work runs in the 90F degree heat.

As for challenges, every potluck or grill out I go to I try to be the one to bring healthy options: cold salads, cut up fruit, seltzer water to drink. That at least gives me options when the table is filled with chips and dip and heavy, greasy food. I also usually bring light beer so I can have a cold one without worrying too much about the calories if I have one or two beers.

My summer traditions include spring swimming and crashing as many pools as possible. I also really get into making flavored waters with cucumber, lemon, mint, lime, etc. I also live by this salad when it gets hot out. It's a full meal and doesn't require using a stove at all. Vietnamese Salad (I add in baked tofu for protein): http://www.goop.com/journal/make/66/vietnamese-salad

What kinds of activities do you look forward to doing in the summer?

Do you have find you have extra challenges attending get togethers, picnics, grill outs, summer weddings?

Do you have any summer traditions or tips to share?

    Great topic!

This is my first normal BMI summer, so I am really looking forward to not sweating so much more than you can fathom. I spend a good bit of the summer at Lake Michigan and the house is old and has no air conditioning. I imagine this will be an entirely different experience than years past. Not to mention the fun of shocking all the people I haven't seen in a year... Hiking, learning to paddleboard, riding pontoon bikes, walking on the beach for miles, etc. are all things I'm looking forward to.

I get a CSA bushel every week there and love figuring out new ways to use crazy vegetables with limited turning on of the stove/oven. Lots of grilling and salads.

I think the biggest challenge will be coexisting with other people in the summer house foodwise. I am single and rarely have anything in the house I don't want to eat and I structure all my own meals just the way I want them. It's harder with other people watching, judging (even if they don't mean to), and cajoling you into having things you don't really need to be eating.

I wish I had inspiration or tips to offer, but for me summer is a real challenge. I live in the Southwest and it gets super hot this time of year. Today it'll be close to 110!!!

For the past several months - since I started on MFP - I've been heading to the nearby high school each evening to walk the track. But tonight it will still be close to 100 until 9pm! Ugh! So I've been searching Craigslist for a decent but cheap treadmill.

I wish I had the confidence to put on a swimsuit. Maybe I can do it if no one's in the pool area and it's after dark . . .

Give it a try! Swimming is a great exercise, and if you go to a pool where people swim to work out (as opposed to lounging around and checking other people out), you'll see all kinds of folks.

I also like cycling when it's hot, because you generate your own breeze, which helps cool you down. But you have to know yourself and your limits really well if you're going to exercise when it's hot. I usually draw the line at 95 degrees these days. When it's hotter than that during the day, I get up early and exercise before the heat of the day, since too often it stays warm into the evening.
