Meditation
Friday, Ordinary 28, Proper 23 the Old Testament Psalm created a snapshot of the Exodus with the great wonders of God’s promises and the failures of the Children of Israel to be faithful, and despite God’s anger, Moses’ intervention caused God not to destroy them.
A remarkable Old Testament lesson where Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu and the seventy elders went up the mountain and encountered God. They didn’t note what God looked like nor did they describe his appearance. However, they noted he stood on what appeared to be a surface of sapphire which was as clear as the sky. Perhaps, they only caught the base that God stood on because that was the only part of God they could see without it destroying them. Other Scriptures noted that no one has seen God; so this encounter must have been a means to be in his presence without harming them. The group of them had prepared extensively for the encounter, too, by purifying themselves.
They drank and ate a meal—a communion with God, where they consecrated the covenant. This preceded the time, when Moses went up the mountain alone to receive the tablets.
The New Testament lesson in James hit hard again, like the Psalmist, reminding believers that they failed by loving the world more than God. How easy it is to become caught up in the false things of the world and not give our attention to God.
“Stand up to the devil and he will flee…” was just like standing up to the schoolyard bully often would send him/her running away. It came down to humility again. The closing lesson,
“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up” reinforced the theme of keeping God first and us in proper perspective. When we are humble, God will boost us up where we will receive the benefits of the miracles and wonders of life.
Thanks be to God.

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

Daily Bible Verses to Memorize for Meditating

Psalm 19:14
King James Version (KJV)
14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

James 4:4-10
King James Version (KJV)
4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?
6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.
10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

Prayer of Encouragement

Almighty God, we thank you for your greatness. Help us not to be full of ourselves and instead be humble in all we do that people will glorify you. In Jesus name, Amen

Conclusion
Friday, Ordinary 28, Proper 23 was harsh in its indictment of those who failed to be obedient and trust in God. Failed to put God first. In the Psalm, the Hebrews left Egypt with many examples of God’s greatness yet they felt into worshiping false gods, creating the golden calf, when Moses was gone for over a month up the mountain.
Yet, there was always redemption. Moses intervened for the Children of Israel an God did not cause them harm.
The Old Testament lesson of Moses, his brother and nephews along with seventy elders, with their remarkable adventure on the mountain of God, seeing the sapphire blue crystal base for God’s footstool, provided a rare glimpse into the supernatural and that their preparation for the time on the mountain was sufficient that God did not harm them for their encounter with the Holy and True God above all gods.
We have the advantage of being able to encounter God in our daily life by studying the Bible and praying directly, because of the atoning work of Jesus, but we can still prepare our hearts, minds and bodies for the encounter with God and see the blessings that will be showered upon us.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
