Meditation
Saturday, Ordinary 28, Proper 23 continued the story of Moses going up into the mountain to receive God’s instructions. After the encounter with God by the seventy elders and Moses, his brother and nephews, God called Moses up further…separating out Moses from the others.
Where the seventy saw the base—sapphire footing—Moses was asked to go up further into the cloud that covered the top of Mt. Sinai and meet God. He was there for forty days and nights.
From below the cloud looked like fire. The elders and Aaron were told to return to the people, in case something needed to be decided while Moses was gone up the mountain.
Forty days. Over a month Moses stayed up on the mountain. We are not given insight into what happened or why he needed to stay up there that long, but we do know that he was obedient and went up to receive the tablets of the law that God declared would be needed for them to follow.
The New Testament lesson also put people to the test. Fasting by John was well known, but Jesus and his disciples didn’t fast, so people wondered why not.
Jesus explained that at a wedding, the guests were not expected to go without food when the bridegroom was there. No one would expect to fast at a wedding, i.e. since Jesus was around, there was no need to fast.
Something new was afoot. Jesus further explained that one didn’t sew a patch of strong fabric on an old worn threadbare cloth or it would break the old cloth. Nor did people put new wine into old wineskins lest it bursts the wineskin.
When new things were put in place, the old needed to be put aside. The old ways were put aside to make room for Christ’s new ways of doing things.
We don’t have to get stuck doing things just because. Christ set a new order of things to be done, not out of duty, but out of love. We trust Jesus, so we obey him.
Thanks be to God.

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

Conclusion
Saturday, Ordinary 28, Proper 23 prepared for the receiving of the Ten Commandments. With amazing detail about some things and complete omissions about others, we learn that Moses sent the leaders back down and continued up the Mountain further, at God’s request.
God declared that he had some tablets of laws that he expected them to follow. The people waited below, only seeing the cloud of fire. But Moses went up into the cloud and disappeared for forty days and nights.
Sometimes, we are asked to wait until the precise moment when God’s plan falls into place. We may find it take a long time, but there are always reasons for the delays, even if we don’t understand them. Our job is to trust and obey. When we do, amazing things happen.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
