Thursday, Ordinary 29, Proper 24 lesson addressed numerous leaders working in concert for God’s designs. The Psalmist praised God for his supremacy, majesty, and awesome nature—sitting above the cherubim and ruling over the universe. Yet he also mentioned the key leaders—Moses, Aaron and Samuel, who were well known for their interaction with God on behalf of Israel. They prayed. God listened and answered their prayers. God spoke to them and they obeyed. God blessed them and more importantly, forgave them for the sins of the Children of Israel.
The Old Testament lesson in Exodus brought the meeting tent into focus and the leadership who solved issues for the people. Moses and Joshua used it to interact with God. All of Israel would come out of their tents to watch when Moses and Joshua went into the tent of meeting with God. The pillar of cloud would shift to its entrance and they would know that God was meeting Moses, essentially friend to friend.
The Children of Israel recognized the veracity of Moses and the uniqueness of the truest of relationships with God. As a result they worshiped God from their own tents as they looked to the tabernacle outside the camp.
In 3 John, the New Testament epistle written to a wealthy believer, Gaius, enumerated the difference between the true and phony leaders. The elder noted that one of the ‘leaders’ of the church spoke lies about others and sought leadership roles for self-aggrandizement. Demetrius, on the other hand, was a man of true leadership, evidenced by his actions and the corroboration of many others, including the apostle.
Leadership in the church should not revolve around self. It should open the door for prayer to the Almighty and help people to worship God. Any leader aiming for divisiveness instead of teaching how to worship God undermines the work of God and will have consequences. Our goal is to be humble, sincere and authentic in our communion with God, so that we point people to worship God, even as Moses, Aaron, Samuel and the apostles did.
Thanks be to God.

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

Exodus 33:7-11
King James Version (KJV)
7 And Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it without the camp, afar off from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation. And it came to pass, that every one which sought the LORD went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was without the camp.
8 And it came to pass, when Moses went out unto the tabernacle, that all the people rose up, and stood every man at his tent door, and looked after Moses, until he was gone into the tabernacle.
9 And it came to pass, as Moses entered into the tabernacle, the cloudy pillar descended, and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the Lord talked with Moses.
10 And all the people saw the cloudy pillar stand at the tabernacle door: and all the people rose up and worshipped, every man in his tent door.
11 And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle.

Prayer of Encouragement

Almighty God, we praise you like the Psalmist did, for you are supreme in all things. We give you thanks for the many ways you have interacted with your servants in history. May we be humble, authentic and point people to worship you. In Jesus name, Amen

Conclusion
Thursday, Ordinary 29, Proper 24’s lesson addressed leadership roles from the Exodus to the New Testament church. Despite the failures of the believers in the Old Testament or the New Testament, the leaders were called upon to demonstrate their true devotion and obedience to God, which was reflected in the fact that their prayers were answered, clearly by all around them.
Whether it was Moses, who went into the tabernacle and spoke with God on behalf of his people or Demetrius in the New Testament, the result was the same: people worshiped God. They didn’t get caught up in adoring the speaker, but the believers gave honor and glory to God. All that we do must seek that same mission—to direct people to God, by our obedience to the commands of God.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*
