No sleep = overeating

For the last several days I have started my day at 3am. I try falling back asleep, but I just can't. So, I eat breakfast by 4am and wind up using most of my calories by 3pm. I don't get to bed until at LEAST 10pm. This is really messing with my calories b/c I keep going over! Are any of you taking anything to sleep better? I was thinking of trying children's benadryl tonight to see if that helps, but I don't really want to drug myself. I am 37 weeks, so I don't think I will hurt the baby, but still. Any help is much appreciated.

This is really tough because you need your sleep now, in about 3 weeks you are going to get much much less!

What time are you going to bed? Are you napping?

Are you waking up hungry? When us the last time you are eating before you go to bed?

I take 1/2 a unisom every night and have since the first tri. I still wake up but I can usually fall back asleep. I did this last pregnancy too and my baby was fine, it's totally safe. My midwife tells me to just stop taking it once I have the baby or it can cause milk supply issues. I'm still exhausted though and eat too many calories just trying to get more energy. :( But exhaustion would come no matter how many hours of sleep I get at this point. Just a couple weeks left!

I also take 1/2 a unisom at night. My OB says it is completely safe. I know some others on here who are pregnant have mentioned tylenol PM, and their OB approved it. Good luck, I think this will help you though, I got SO exhausted last week from lack of sleep that I cried for 2 whole days, running on 2 hours of sleep a night, and yes I was over eating also. as soon as I started taking these I have had great sleep, and when I do wake up to pee I fall right back to sleep.

I'm generally working out for an hour 6 days a week and I think it is helping my sleep a lot. I really struggled with this in my last pregnancy and sleeping pills aren't so easy to come by in the UK. I also listen to a hypnobirthing / relaxation CD when I am going to bed at night and I really do think it has helped. My quality of sleep when I listen to it is much better than when I don't. Even my husband says he sleeps better, and falls asleep faster when we put it on. I have taken sleeping pills before in the past and I wouldn't blame you if you chose to go down that route but I found although they made me sleep I felt a bit hungover and groggy the next day. Also planning out your food in advance for the day and scheduling in food every 2 hours (within calorie goal) might help as you will know it is only ever 2 hours until the next meal. If I was waking up at 4 I would make myself wait until 7 for breakfast (when I normally eat it). I've done this the past two days as I was really struggling with being hungry and eating all the time and I found it did help. I really hope you get some rest. It's a struggle with exhaustion when you're pregnant anyway but when you are sleep deprived and looking after children it's pretty grim.

Thanks ladies! The children's benedryl worked gloriously- I know it is on the approved list, but I will ask my OB tomorrow about it- I certainly don't want to become dependent on it.

I thought I would chime in with something that helped me with severe insomina before I got pregnant. I had months waking early, just like you, and also had a hard time falling asleep. I tried medications (and wine!), but nothing was really helping. I got desperate and searched for apps on my iPad and found Darren Marks, Relax Completely hynosis app. I used it to fall asleep and if I woke up at all and it worked like a charm! After a month I didn't even have to use it anymore. Might be worth a shot!
